What is the best way to fly more stealthy in BMS?
-
Switching the RF Switch to Silent will turn off all EM emissions from the aircraft. TFR, Radar Altimeter, FCR, ECM, Link16 etc.
Flying on the deck is also a good way to avoid notice by enemy radar. Unfortunately, it’s not a good way to avoid notice by MANPADS.

Thinking of BMS, you probably wrote “link16” for “datalink”.

Jammer and FCR and lights, those are the only things that matter EMCON-wise that I know of in BMS. TFR, radio altimeter, IDM, comms don’t AFAIK. To sneak up the peninsula without detection you want to go low through a radar hole, the more mountainous terrain the better. No such radar hole exists day one.

there is no such thing as stealth unless you have skunk stripes or a black widow’s hourglass on your back. fly NOE, destroy radar stations. RF to silent works good in aerial combat situations when you have VID or a BRA call, you still have an RCS profile.

Thank you guys. Ok yes I had a suspicion that turning ECM on wasn’t a good idea.
Dee Jay, oh thanks because I was disabling my RWR and I had no awareness, good to know that the RWR is passive only!
Frederf, you said FCR so that means that I should manually disable FCR or it stops emitting just by switching RF to silent as starfuryth said? -

without using the f-22 or NOE techniques, or jamming aircraft you are going to have a tough time getting in behind and loitering to setup AMBUSHCAPS. there are a few stealth caps in an f-22 and NOE techniques on youtube check those out.

Whatever puts NO RAD on the HUD works the same. The RF switch is supposed to be a comprehensive one-stop-shop for EMCON but since I think the only things that really matter in BMS are jammer/FCR it’s not super useful as such.

Is terrain modelled for enemy aircraft radar? In the original Falcon 4 book there was a diagram showing AMBUSHCAP behind a mountain - however I didn’t think that the radar in Falcon 4 had any form of radar shadowing. I remember sometime ago the shadowing was discussed in in the context of GM/SP mode…but of course that is not RWS/TWS etc. Does anyone know if terrain is modelled for AA radar?

Stealthy to whom? If AI, I don’t think it matters much. They seem to have near perfect knowledge and SA.

Yes. I have penetrated DPRK airspace low and shadowed from search radars. I’ve watched the ACMI where a MiG-21 CAP was vectored my way in time with becoming unmaked and getting "S"s on my RWR. I even think it should be easy to demonstrate in a carefully constructed TE or MP session with a cooperative “drone” player.

Terrian Masking and Weapon Systems Minimums are Modeled. A Simple TE with Say an SA-2 on top of a Mountain Range work. Fly high, It’ll Shoot you. Fly Low and keep Terrain between you and it, And you should pass right on by unmolested. You could Even Get Ballsy and Try a Loft Attack at it if you want. Krause has Two Great Videos Showing it.
An “Old” Going Defensive Tutorial:
And his 80s ITO Survival Guide has a Loft Using Terrain masking to attack an SA-6 Unmolested:
I’m sure there’s a few others, but those are what immediatly come to my mind.

That’s because, with the SA-2 on mountain top, you’re below his minimum engagement altitude. He won’t engage regardless of terrain masking.
Try it on flat (more or less) ground with an SA-10, -11 or -17. Then use the terrain masking. It should work.

That is correct. Sometimes my brain works faster than my hands can type and I forget to check my wording. Either way, it’s always good to check your surroundings for areas to break Line of Sight from anything trying to kill you. Just make sure there’s no MANPADS around, or a Shilka. That’s a whole new layer of trouble you’ll be getting into. Doubly so if they’re not marked on the map during the briefing.
