Wingman "Unable" JDAM
-
Hey Everyone,
I’ve searched and can’t find what I’m looking for, but I’m sure it’s already out there. I’ve preassigned target steerpoints for myself (92 - 99). My plan was for me to attack 99, 98, 95, and 94 and have my AI wingman attack the other four. I was able to successfully destroy the targets at my steerpoints with my four GBU-38’s but my wingman only replies “unable” no matter what I try. I switch to one of “his” steerpoints (still in A-G mode) and “Attack My Target” is greyed out. So I tried using the FCR to designate the target there and giving AMT. This time I call out the location to him but he still calls “unable.” Finally I tried with the TGP with the same result.
Are AI wingmen able to attack targets with JDAMs?
Thanks!
EDIT: Do I have to handoff the STPT I want him to engage with CMS right?

Hi,
If this is a clean scenarion (i.e just you, wingman, bombs and targets) then there are 2 reasons I can think of:
1. He already dropped all his bombs, so has no weapons to attack with (You can check that in real time by asking him for weapons count, or by simply looking at him in external view).
2. You are pointing him to attack a friendly target.I did countless attacks with wingman and JDAMs and didn’t had such problems.
However, note that you may NOT have your wingman be smart enough to attack 4 specific targets as you may expect him to. If you give him ATM command, he will drop all his JDAMs at that target so that’s not gonna work. Instead I suggest to use “Attack Targets” command which this way usually have him spread his bombs somewhat randomly on the complex of the target area you are pointing him to. Random isn’t really the correct word, because they do have a priority of targets, but there is randomness still. BTW this is the same way the pure AI flight will attack with JDAMs, they will drop their bombs on different targets.
This area really can improve, e.g I had an idea to give the AI a pre-planned command (From the UI, or even while in 3D already) which will direct him exactly as to how many bombs to drop on which target, but unfortunately never got to it before other things caught my attention. Maybe one day me or someone else will implement such behavior, which I agree is greatly needed.

If you want your Wingman to Attack Multiple Specific Targets without relying on the Randomness of the Attack Targets Command, You can give him LGBs. Since the AI will guide the Bomb in, He can’t Drop another one, Allowing you to Issue Multiple AMT commands on separate targets. Obviously of course this attack method suffers from the limitations of LGBs, Such as Visibility, Clouds, Air Threats, AAA/SAMs, But if you got the time to do it, It’s the best way to go.
as a note, the AI is smart enough to hit Moving Vehicles with LGBs, Good info if you need to hit ground targets but it’s a bit too hot for Mavericks, Since the AI is Infamous (At least in my case) for casually Flying low and Eating MANPADs, and Shilkas

Thanks for the replies. I’ll give it another try on my next mission. Basically, yeah just me and my wingman, he definitely still has weapons (I asked). We are working west to east along the northern edge of the DMZ taking out the DPRK HART units (for that promotion to Colonel…haha) so they definitely aren’t friendlies.
Do I have to have something locked on FCR or TGP to issue the “Attack Targets” command or will having a target STPT suffice? Weather is poor so TGP/LGBs isn’t really an option.

Is “Attack My Target” also greyed out, if you still have at least one bomb yourself ?

No, you don’t need to have anything locked or tracked, it’s enough to have the cursor on the STPT of the target. Of course you MUST have something under the cursor, or indeed the commands will be grayed out.

Grayed out commands has nothing to do with your own weapons, they should be available even if you have nothing A-G, as long as you are in A-G mode and your SPI is on target.

AMT is only valid if your cursor (of whatever sensor) is over a targetable object. Remember that the AI can’t know which of your sensors you mean so it follows SOI to decide. If AMT is gray then you aren’t pointing at anything.
AMT is also an implied WF so while you might get a delivery against a specific target he might immediately (possibly milliseconds) continue to attack other mission targets that he’s in parameters for. If you manage a release from Two then give an immediate WH and re-AMT him on the next.

I have no prob with AI JDAMS it’s the LGB type that the AI can’t use, he always misses the target when he drops a LGB

I usually atack movers with LGBs and comand my wingman or element to attack such targets by locking them.- Once they decide to attack, always got direct hits.
