OpenTrack, does BMS work with it?

“TIR5: 51.7°
PS3 Eye: 56° and 75°”So, not for the first time, I am trying to understand why TIR5 is so bloody expensive.
Is it just because it can be? Am I paying for all of their past research etc?
Because it sure seems like I should just buy a pre-modded PS3 eye form somewhere like here:
https://delanengineering.com/products/head-tracking-delanclip-gamer/
or here:
The thing is FreeTrack and OpenTrack in it is purest forms require some DIY attitude and skills. For best results it is recommended to remove IR filter and put visible light filter*. You have to solder IR diodes and resistors. You have to make a clip.
With TIR you get it all working out-of-the-box.
I would never buy anything from NP since they blocked FreeTrack algorhitm in ArmA2 10 years ago.
- mine is cut from old floppy disk
Regarding IR diodes: IR TSAL6400 5mm 940nm
I use TSAL6400 since 2008, still the same ones.

Hope this helps ! -
Ah but the trick is I want a wireless IR clip, Im sick of wired ones.

Mower, you have to see what is more comfortable for you !!

"Q: Does EDTracker provide 6DOF?
Not officially; EDTracker Pro is a 3DOF device. In Q4 2018 we aim to provide an option in software to enable the extra 3DOF using an external webcam to track head position"
Thats a deal breaker for me Im afraid.
Well, as above it need not be. You can use other tracking solutions to provide translation. For example, the facetracking solution mentioned above, although I wouldnt use it myself - facetracking does NOT work well with glasses. You can also hook up a couple IR diodes and use those for translation, and the ED Tracker providing the attitude axes.
Ill again highlight the stability of the device, this was the deal maker for me. TIR was not stable, was not cheap, and never worked terribly well for me. EDTracker simply worked… thats a huge deal in my book.

Opentrack with EDTracker here. Never going back to TIR.
That got me interested but with no 6DoF, it’s a no go for me. Make it 6DoF and I’d be sold and I already have a TIR5.
Ah but the trick is I want a wireless IR clip, Im sick of wired ones.
TIR5 with the various wireless IR clips available. I got this when my pro clip broke:
https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?30037-UTC-Mk-II-professional-wireless-TrackClip-Pro-alternativeWhy is the TIR5 expensive? Consider how long and how often you’d use it.
-
This is the issue; you can can find cheaper but not better than TIR5. Even with TIR4 I had some dead zones in the upper corners I could never fix due to its field of view, whereas the TIR5 FOV is wider and Im betting will resolve this, but funds are limited andso TIR5 is off the table for me. I cant find anything better than TIR5, only cheaper.
Thanks Mower for clarification on this.
I’ll think I just buy another TIR5 because ease of use and availability of quite good profiles. Less hassle with settings and more flying.M79

is edtracker with 6pseudo dof any good? does the latest build have drift problem? can you zoom with edtracker?if they will enable 6dof with extra camera do you think is worth someone to buy it or tir5 is better

Dunno, I like this too…

with the camera ofcourse

Just my 2 cents…
I’ve used both TIR and EDtracker. Both are awesome to use. I settled on EDtracker for a couple of reasons.
The first was cost. They are cheap as chips to build and don’t require a camera setup. Secondly, I found that with the monitor being static, I liked the fact that I could easily return to a center HUD view naturally. I felt with the TIR I was always floating a bit off center or sitting too far away.
With BMS, I have a X56 HOTAS. I’ve setup the scroll pinky wheel on the side of the throttle to change the FOV. This allows quick zooming in on features and ground targets. Scrolling back returns to a set FOV in the cockpit, so I don’t really want the 6-dof complicating that.
The only time I’ve thought that I wanted 6-dof, was looking down at the side panels. Using the Opentrack software, I just introduced a small zoom curve when looking down. It works surprising well and feels natural, like bending your neck forward.
TIR is awesome and the rest of my team uses them, but I have to admit, if I was gifted one now, I don’t think I’d swap out my Edtracker…
Hey, look at it this way (I did…), order a cheap EDTracker kit, grab a soldering iron and get flying. You can do this whilst saving up for a TIR…[emoji846]
Happy to share my profiles.

The other day I bought a PS3Eye off kijiji for $10.
Modding it was easy.
I tried it with OpenTrack and did not like it at all, found it very glitchy. As well, for my style of simming, I must have 6DOF. I will not give that up.
I lean towards replacing my TIR, I had a good 10 year run with it, so that means TIR5 new or a second hand TIR4. Of the 2 I prefer new and reliable.
I may use the PS3Eye for now as a stop gap but will begin the lengthy approval process through Committee (ie prone-to-violence-cop-wife) for the funds to be released.
BTW if anyone wants to help a brother simmer out and send anything at all to the help Mower avoid cop-wife-beatings fund, I’m never too proud at my advanced age to decline…paypal [email protected].

Don’t buy trackhat no good comments about their support and you may experience problem with the wireless clip ,I read about the usb charge port problem with the time. Delanclip has good comments for their support .
So in the end you can go with tir5 ,Delanclip or edtracker ,for Delanclip clip I would choose the wired clip
,the only problem with track ir is the plastic of their clip, and edtracker is only 3 dof -
@vfp:

That is what I see as well form their forum yes. Also it has been taken over by spam the past year. very bad sign.
Natural Point’s support is top notch from my own experience this past decade.
In the end it pays to fly first class IMHO.

And so you just wasted $10 that could’ve gone to the TIR5?

In an attempt to avoid paying $200 that I dont have, yes. Probably wont have the $ until end of the year so a worthwhile gamble, no?

What can I say, one loves ‘TIR 5’ and the other is happy with ‘Opentrack’ - and that’s how it should be:drum:.

So now the TIR5 costs $210 instead of $200. Sometimes, buying cheap ends up being more expensive than buying quality. Not saying the other headtracker options are cheap, just saying that for most situations.
Besides, who said you had to buy TIR new? Lots of TIR being sold here and on eBay from flight simmers and racing simmers who are quitting the hobby so you can get the hardware for cheap.
-
Yeah I looked at eBay and the prices are lower but the seller says no exchanges or refunds and crap like that.
