Guantanamo Theater

This is a learning project I want to do to see if I can create a new terrain.
If anyone wants to correct me or add input is more than welcome! It is the first time I try to do this… so I am not sure of the correct path.
I will keep updating the first post with the process. By now this is a not very detailed log, I will try to expand on each section as I go.
So far:

Getting Cuba e00 data out of the .adf data - (uploaded to the project folder)

Generating files with Dem2Terrain using Joe’s global .hdr and Lazystones korea.pal - (uploaded to the project folder)
To be able to open the global.hdr using Dem2Terrain you need to mark Dem2Terrain as the designated aplication that opens .HDR files. If you simply open Dem2Terrain and choose “open file” this wont work; It won’t do anything.
Be sure to mark the 4bits theater, since BMS does not work with the 2 bits old ones.
Best to change your size to something that fits you to locate the center where you want to.
Also, if you change units to Kilometers and resolution to 0.25 you get tiles of exactly 1km wide x 1km long instead of 0,99something of a km. Pretty cool to make your life easy on any photorealistic thing you want to achieve. (Thanks Manos!)You will need to be sure to add each e00 you got from step 1 one by one to D2T.
- Creating Add-On Guantanamo folder and copying the following folders from KTO:

Movies

Music

Shaders

TerrData
- But after copying this whole folder I erase the TerrData/Objects folder within it. (optional, read post #8 here to see why)
- Rename the folder “Korea” inside Add-On Guantanamo\TerrData\ as “Guantanamo”.
- Erase all files inside Add-On Guantanamo\TerrData\Korea\Terrain
- Paste my .l2, .o2, .map and .mea files generated using Dem2Terrain inside Add-On Guantanamo\TerrData\Korea\Terrain and rename .l2 and .o2. as THEATER_Polak.L2 and THEATER_Polak.O2 and the .map and .mea to THEATER.MAP and THEATER.MEA respectively. Read post #9.
8] Create my own Guantanamo.tdf file under TerrData/Theaterdefinition by modifying the Korea KTO.tdf and saving under “Guantanamo.tdf” name (uploaded to the Project folder). I then erase the Korea KTO.tdf - Edit theater.lst under KTOs TerrData/Theaterdefinition to include my theater inserting this line in the file using a text editor:```
Add-On Guantanamo\TerrData\TheaterDefinition\Guantanamo.tdf
If everything is fine so far you should be able to open your terrain with TerrainEditor 10) Create GUANTANAMO.THR and save it to Add-On Guantanamo\Campaign using TerrainEditor: [![](https://i.postimg.cc/CBQczgVv/makeTHR.jpg)](https://postimg.cc/CBQczgVv) 11) Importing from my Dem2Terrain generated objectives .csv by: * Opening Save0.cam with Mission Commander (MC) and deleting all Objectives and Units. Then saving this file to the 73 format (Marking the 73 Tick) * Opening Save0.cam with TacEdit. Going to ObjList and importing objectives from the D2T generated .csv, then saving. Will ask to save my WCH. Do so also, but not as Korea.wch, but as "guantanamo.wch" in my case. 12) Changing the theater name for my save0.cam under the "campaing" label using MC - 1 change, 2 apply change and 3 save as version 100. Then save again. 14) Export objectives from save0 using MC to all the other .cams and tac. Specially te_new.tac to be able to create your own tacs using the Tactican Engament Engine in the sim. This time no need to revert versions and go to TacEdit. Export/import objectives using MC from save0 to the other files. 15)Export/Import the units from Koreas save0 to the save0.cam in your theater. DONT IMPORT YOUR UNITS TO te_new.tac.Then assign some present in your theater airbases to the imported squadrons. Very good choice! Was thinking about this theater just the other day, that it would be intresting.Also think panama theater perhaps good serve as example as size and concept will be similar?Cheers Obi1

I want to keep it 64x64 ( Whole Cuba does not fit into a 64x64) to keep things “Vanilla” simple.
This one is just almost centered near Guantanamo bay.
(Actually, I ended up moving the center to also fit Florida’s Key West AB and HAVANA)

One thing about Dem2Terrain (D2T):
At first i tried to generate my .l2 file as:
THEATER.L2 all in caps. This way D2T fails to generate .mea, tdfs and csv files…
If instead i name my l2 as “guantanamo” D2T saves it as guantanamo.l2 (no caps) and generates fine .mea .tdfs and .csv, also .map
So my Guess is that trying to force it to an .L2 extensión creates errors that stop the app after generating .o2

The only plan right now is to be able to create a working theater and have the process written.
Once that its done I will think about It.

I am thinking this through and I am going to remove the /TerrData/Objects folder, so I can copy different instances form my tryouts without the heavy burden of the database and 3ddatabase sizes (5GB).
I will coment out with hastags the tdf entries:#objectdir Add-On Guantanamo\Terrdata\objects #3ddatadir Add-On Guantanamo\Terrdata\objects
and this way they Theater reverts back to KTO (Korean Theater of Operations) database and 3ddatabase.
C****AREFUL, because if you do a change in the objects3d or db you will be screwing Koreas! so consider this as optional and if you really want to keep it safe don’t do this.

Some report on the situation.
I have found that using THEATER.o2 and .l2 instead of THEATER_Polak.O2 and L2 avoided me from loading the theater on falcon resulting on Crash To Desktop, which I did not expected.
Now it loads that this files are named THEATER_Polak.O2 and .L2. So I have decided to work on the theater selection image (/TerrData/Theaterdefinition/Guantanamo.tga)
I will upload to the project folder and have already updated the process.

Dealing with MC to edit my te_new.tac so I can change under the “campaing” label guantanamo instead of korea.
My .csv generated with Dem2Terrain is not working in MC. Maybe I need to get this with an older file format for the .tac and using TacEdit, or adapt the old one to a .csv format MC will accept.

You can use it with Tacedit! Save your save0 without any objectives or whatever as version 73. Close MC and run Tacedit. load the saved save0 then go to objectives on the top and click import objectives and load the dem2terrain generated csv. Save as you want and the open it with MC and resave it normally as version 100

YES! This did work.
I did it this way:
a) Save the save0.cam in MC as version 73 without touching nothing.
b) Open in TacEdit
c) Delete all Objectives
d) Delete all Airbases
e) Import from my csv
f) Save it.
g)Open in MC and allow a fix on a missing squadron or something like that
h) Change now from the campaign tab my theater name to guantanamo and save as v100Thanks again Manos!

Ok, not much advancement this weekend. I have been digging into the e00 file, also fiddling with other software to try to “sanitize” my e00 files so that they don’t generate so many (actually everything but airports) NoName objectives. This has been time consuming and not very productive for now.

Last night I was a bit looking into CATE and reflecting on It I thought I needed to look at the satellite images to have some ideas on what to do for tiling.
So I thought about using SAS Planet to look at It and at least get Guantanamo bay un photorealistic.
I needed to update my gogl maps settings there so I used as reference

Ok, for what I have understood so far, in order for CATE to work I would have to have an image (.BMP I Guess) of my theater where each pixel represents a tile.
Sooo if my Theater is 64 segments wide and 64 height and each segment is also 16 tiles by 16 tiles….
64x16=1024 pixels wide.
Therefore for my theater I need to grnerate a 1024×1024 bitmap where each RGB color pixel represents a type of tile.
I would have to tell cate by script what to do when It founds color XYZ (RGB) etc…
Sounds easy… and I am sure It wont be.

The noname are all noname or some?
If they have parents and those parents are named then it’s a piece of cake to name them, depending on the category…
For example bridges that many theaters have them like noname or 0 it’s super easy to baptize them all at once automatically.
