F-14D Cockpit
-
Hey guys…here is the texture for the heading-bearing indicator, most complicated gauge until now with quite a few layers!
I also wanted to ask a few things to all the cockpit nerds…I´m sure there are a few here… What are these things that I´ve highlighted? Lights? Arent there too many of them? Would you guys have a picture that gets somehow closer to it with more details?

Those are Cockpit light lamps i think.

Actually those are flood lamps/storm lights for the panel. The instruments themselves will have a couple of internal bulbs to illumnate the faces.

I spent the morning at home recovering from a terrible hangover…so I had a few free hours!:D
The ADI is taking shape!
Happy flying!

Can’t wait to fly in this!

Mykinge,
This looks great….Keep up the great work!!!

MyKinge,
Have you seen the following F-14 site? It was started a number of years ago but it has a lot of information.

Great find mate. Thanks.
-
Thanks Skelator!
I knew that web site, indeed is a good source of information although a little bit outdated now! Today I had some fun with the texturing of the right side console. More than a finish product I wanted to develop a proper workflow for all the panels. I have drawn them all in CAD (outlines) then into illustrator for fonts and main tones and the export to PS for final editing… Lots of steps for loads of panels!!!
I still having given up with the geometry of the canopy…but I feel a bit frustrated when I spend hours trying to do it and the result are worst than what I had a the beginning!! As for the HOTAS…I dont even think Im going to try to model it, I might ask a member of the comunity to model it for me if I give him the main dimensions…any volunteers??
Anyway! Goodnight and happy flying!
PS. I dont know why photobucket resizes the image…its a pitty cause its got quite a lot of detail…

If there any cockpit maker… please help for my cockpits i have some pit models but there no any people helping for integrating of bms. AMEN.
-
Dam, I wish I knew anything about 3D-modeling! :x
I know Illustrator inside-out though. Would it help you in any way if i could reconstruct the profile sections of the F-14 canopy like in the picture below?
The black ink drawing in the top layer is not mine, but I think I can come pretty close with some frontal shots and a good pic from the side.
Let me know if you want me to give it a shot.Really nice work there m8
-
Birdman, thanks man! That drawing looks awesome! I think I´m ok for now…as for the 3d modelling everything is just a matter of getting started, its not rocket science!
611-eagle I was counting on you to help me implement it in BMS once is finished but I heard someone was working on a tutorial about cockpits in BMS…that would be awesome…:p
Cheers guys!

Lol, I hear you. Yea, maybe if i’m a realy fast learner, i’ll be able to help you with that stick, right.
Well, som day …Keep it up pepe, Tomcat is one of my old time favorites. would be a dream to fly it in BMS with your pit.

:headb:
I love the vintage logo….soooo classy
Chuckles (ar anyone around) any insight of what the contrat number should be??
Pepe!

Nice work!
Is the cockpit triangle and texture limit the same as for the aircraft externals at 30k/2048x2048?
Does the main texture get an alpha channel for spec? No normal mapping?
This cockpit looks a bit over polygon level, better to add MORE polygons and get even nicer edges and burn to normal map if we could? Or burn in the subtle rounded edges into shading for the diffuse map and spec map?
How do people generally go about cockpit modelling wrt reference material? Ie, getting the basic dimensions correct and things?
Thanks
Dave

MyKinge, I am not sure what the contaract number for an F-14 is. But, I have seen the data plate for an A-6E Intruder on the US military forums. The Contract number for the A-6 was N00019-76-C-0366

I still having given up with the geometry of the canopy….but I feel a bit frustrated when I spend hours trying to do it and the result are worst than what I had a the beginning!!
Show us what you have done
Personally the way I would do it……
Start from the front edge of your canopy arch and draw an outline using splines.
Then using reference material, work your way back, copy the spline you have made (shift drag) and adjust as needed.
When you have enough, add a surface modifier. Remove the modifier and adjust the splines needed, then reapply the modifier until you have a good shape.Convert it to a poly and smooth as needed.
Here is the sort of thing I mean… Not the best tutorial but you get the idea.
Or just spline model the contour straight down the center from front to back, then add a lathe modifier. Cut off the bits you don’t need
-
The F14 canopy is fairly bubbly though, in it’s length profile at least… I’m assuming it changes along it’s length too.
I’d model it with splines, then surface as has been said. But keep it editable. Then when new information/data presents itself it’s really easy to adjust. As long as the base around the airframe doesn’t move the verts in between can do what they like I suppose (ie, you are free to edit whenever and not effect anything else too much)

Thanks Chuckles…thats good for me!
Dont have time to post today the bubble canopy guys…but all your comments were useful!
Cheers!

Guys, this is off topic, but at FF used to be a fan named Corto and he already had a complete F-14D 3D model of IMHO great appearance. If anyone of the BMS devs knows whom I mean and has a contact addy or so, he might eventually (?) be willing to talk about his model.-Imagine a new 3D model as addition, that would make a lot of guys incl. me happy.
I was always sad his work was not adopted by FF albeit I understood the reasons and have no bad feelings towards that. But such a beautiful model, for those who remember.
