DOG EAR - what does it do?
-
You are hugely mistaken
The EWR are used to detect the contacts and then transfer them to the FCR with an accuracy that allow the FCR to acquire much quicker the contacts.
Thanks to the ewr the fcr remains silent most of the time and will turn on just to engage
Kill the ewr and then you will see the FCR will stay on most of the time and will need much more time to engage
but the FCR can still shoot the ship even with EWR destroyed. On the other hand if the FCR is destroyed first then the EWR will just sit there doing nothing even with all the missiles available.

“The 9K31 Strela-1, with the NATO designation SA-9 Gaskin, is a self-propelled SAM system. It is based on the BRDM-2 chassis, but lacks the belly wheels. There are no variants, except that the battery commander’s vehicle is fitted with a radar detection system. Usually one out of four vehicles is fitted with a 9S16 Flat Box-A radar detection antenna, alerting the crew of nearby aircraft. When the launch vehicle is fitted with the 9S16 it is known in the West as the SA-9A and without as the SA-9B.”

So these guys get a little help from radar a specially outfitted SA-9 within a group of SA-9s IRL - but it’s a passive radar a little like a RWR, according to wikipedia.

That’s IRL. I think we’re talking about BMS.

It’s like saying the FCR does nothing really. Without the launchers, the FCR sits there there doing nothing.

not quit, because launcher are multiple in number so much so that they may not be all destroyed at once. If even one launcher is missed then the danger of being shot is still there. But if FCR is destroyed then all the launchers are.
-
The launchers? They do nothing really.

So you’re saying the SA-9 will be less effective by killing its dog ear?
Also I notice both the SA-9 and 13 both have small radar dishes or antennas of some sort according to tac reference. These are essentially FCRs?
SA-9 does not have any radar dish, that is SA-8 which in RL it has its own target. acq. radar.
The SA-13 in RL has only target distance meter which is not a targ. acq. radarIf you wish to know a lot about air defense you can do it here.

Based on this long stuff I made a doc for BMS Team and they used to created the current AD and its modeling.

Just forget the wiki.

Maybe they are involved in gathering interceptors guiding data?
-
@dronny In RL? Nope. The SA-9 did not have anything but only a radio and as I know even the SA-13 had just data. The digital data link in Cold War era was not available for a such low level unit.
-
@molnibalage Do we talk about “Dog Ear” (not very)EWR yet? As far as i know the phone is the only thing really needed to direct interceptors and send preparation order to outpost launchers. Without such things even manpads are useless in practice, so there was commander with radio who tells to shooters where to look and when to activate coolant battery. Sorry, i’m not a native speaker in it worstest meaning.
