Somalia Theatre ?

Here’s a little small folder I made to get a first impression during an IL-2 mod of how Djibouti looks regarding sea colour, land colours and vegetation. One tex in that for water shallows by my friend Bombsaway. Kept it in…
Wildly collected from google.
http://www.mediafire.com/?v9s1p2qfqbhuouxEdited, now with Dee-Jay’s shots and some shots deleted (copyright).
Moderators: Please delete all folders I post if there’s anytime an infringement (unintended).I am impressed every time I check various (even close as 500 miles) Sahara/African regions as how fast colours and vegetation change from red to brown to greyish kakhi to yellow and from scrub to rock to plantages etc.
So I gues Somalia does not look anything like Djibouti, albeit they’re neighbours.
Somalia is also huuge… -
I will be there in tree days … tell me if you want some other real pictures from the air…
-
EDIT: For info … those pic has been taken during an incredible good visibility day…
But “most of the time”, moisture % are so hight, that at FL150 you can’t see the ground … sky and below is completely withe!

You’re right, I propose to 64 segment , not more. This is what gave Neystratiou, housed in a frame of 64 segments:
My offer is this:
But… we need to Yemen in the theater? Maybe someone has another suggestion?
Here is everything for a new map. Maybe someone will do it better?
http://www.mediafire.com/?tb9f1ck5mb7njh4Eghi, I think the picture in the lower left, the one below you words my offer is this, is the one we should use. I was thinking that some of Yemen should be included. This would allow land based NATO aircraft to be based for attacks into Somalia. Also, by including Yemen, we can also have an Ethopia/Somalia versus Yemen conflict included. Finally, I was thinking no matter what size the final map will be, the FLOT will be located in Somalia. Without Yemen and the Gulf of Aden as a barrier, blue aircraft taking off will face heavy SAM and AAA defense almost immediately once they are airborne. Reducing their intensity will be required to make the gameplay a little more enjoyable. We can reduce that pitfall by locating blue aircraft in Yemen. A USN carrier would also be required in any circumstances.
Let me know what you guys decide concerning the map. I have the rough template done for Somalia. I’m using Korea campaigns and terrain, but

Dee-Jay, great pictures, downloaded and added to my Djibouti/Somalia folder…

I know this is not very popular gents, posting my usual IL-2 stuff, but I do this not to annoy or distract, simply to show what I already sent RAM22 as tex and add an option (I always send RAM22 the stuff I find interisting lol, sorry mate). I flew over this theatre the past days checking for modifications and just loved the idea of having it in both sims.
After the great shots Eghi posted (totally loved them), I like the idea of a Somalia theatre, I think it is just the area which I find appealing geographically.
So, if someone is interested in the textures a modder named agracier made, these would be available supplementing your work. Of course things in IL-2 look way different, also depending on daytimes chosen.
The first shots show the default colour with Bumps (might cause a too bumped image for some tastes) and the 2nd row of shots are with slightly repainted textures where I tried to add a little more red and/or saturation. All in tga, indexed to 1GB.
A lot of shots, but I wanted to give the entire picture. Agracier allowed me to use his work however I wish (thanks man) and I would simply inform him should anyone jump on this offer here at a later process.Theatre is modded IL-2 Djibouti/East Ethiopia/nothern Somalia.
Bumps are added by me and I would not use them on all these textures in IL-2 tbh.Slightly different colour
To not flood the thread I can delete the shots later…no prob.

I sure wish I could get my IL-2 to look like yours, Tom! Anyway, I’m going to take a look and see what we have here…
-
I think this is going to be an exciting theatre with plenty of scope. Well done to all involved.
Cheers!
-
Great shots Tom. That’s the kind of flood we like to see:p
-
Thanks, guys…toonces, if you someday can arrange a TS meet, I can tell you all what you need to tune up your IL-2. Just a few tricks. And most important: Knowing which modded maps rock and which suck. If you ever visit the SAS forum, search for “Sidi Ifni” and “Bhenghalli Islands”, “Hawaiian Islands”, “MTO”, “South Vietnam 1968” and so on…
Chuckles: Will send pm…cheers,
Tom

@ Chuckles, toonces, neystratiou…
Still interested in the terrain?Little progress (Today’s scribble;)) :
Rivers easily done, because they are dry (no need to do alpha channel).
-
Wow, that looks amazing.
-
Eghi, totally stunning. The theatre comes alive with your selection of tiles.
-
Agree, very nice!

Hi my friend Arek.
Great work out there in the terrain ;).
Please if you want, just go ahead and continue this nice work!
Now i think that we must see what can we do and what help do we need, so we post for help.
By my side, i already offer to create the NavAids, their list and some IAP charts for landings. Also after the placing of airports, i can correct issues with runways that not been leveled and where aircrafts explode over runways.
I’m in touch with my friend Gavin “Chuckles”, and if “toonces” want to help he is welcomed :p.
Also anyone that interested to help, just contact with “pm” someone of us.
With regards,
Nikos. -
Would be nice if BMS supported higher resolution terrain elevation grids. Someone said the L0 and L1 were interpolations of L2 data.
-
I have a question: Is it possible to mod the water colour in BMS? I have a soft spot for this theatre, but the default colour does not fit at all, I did some research for a small IL-2 mod.
If the answer is yes and someone could give me a tutorial, I’d be glad to help. Unless I have to learn rocket science before lol.Arek, great job!

You mean editing the colour in the terrain textures or editing the shaders?
-
I think I mean editing the textures so that the water has a different colour. No experiecne with shaders, so yes, I mean whatever makes the result look appear in brighter blue or any coclour we wish to be showing up.

Hi my friend Arek “Eghi”.
Well done until now with Somalian terrain ;)!
Just continue your great work.
This time i just finished the work for Panama theater and upload it, so now i will start to working the Somalian airports info from real world (due to the fact that this specific time i have a small break from my Aegean theater, waiting one of my partners to we go ahead after his part of work) and very soon i will pass you the info to place the correct type of airports in the proper and precise place in the terrain.
Just “pm” with which method do you put the airports in their position inside the terrain, in order to help you by providing correct info.
Also give me the exactly size (borders) of the terrain/map, in order to prepare for you all the other airports of other countries.@ “Polak” and “toonces”
Guys if you interested to help with any means, just contact with “pm” someone of us, “Eghi” or “Chuckles” or me.
It will be great if you want and can help us at this nice trial for Somalia theater, even with something “small”, no problem. The help is always welcomed whatever it is ;)!
Also anyone that can do something and want to join this project, just contact one of the previous guys mentioned. We will have some fun and offer to Falcon community an extra nice theater. And even if it will be incomplete, it will be used as a nice place for PvP missions :p.
With my best regards,
Nikos.
