Nice to see it again. I see the data for Russia - west is missing. Russia west data was in Lambert projection , but were converted to fit the normal gegraphic projection by Zaggy. So integrating the missing data is doable. (I´m still looking for it).
As Moort said, we skipped the theater since the SRTM data coverage ended just north of Ørlandet AB. Today, good data should be availble for the whole region.
In light of what has been seen lately, I think making the theater in 128 x 128 should be considered, even if it might look strange or distorted in a flat projection. The tactical scenarios for camapigns might be more interresting.
If help is needed, let me know, and I may be to some assistance.

The people still think, that data sources are the most important. The roots of such an illusion are quite ancient. It was common to download bunch of datas and build a theater in two days in the past. The only human input was objective linking due to the TacEdit autolink error. Strange its still quite similar in contemporary days despite the simmers expectation growed. Most people are dreaming about satelite imaginery in Falcon. Lets go download huge amount of data and stitch a miracle. The terrain itself is unimportant just see that lovely 1 pixel photo imaginery!
Just very few care about highmap editing. But with L2 resolution (which is the best we have in BMS), strong human input to fine tune terrain is needed (especialy in narrow fjord type terrain). Even if we would have L0 res, the human input is needed. The possibility to build nordic area was the same 10 years ago. Nothing changed. Oh no, my misstake - its much worse now. In the past it was possible to easily tweak and edit the terrain according to way terrain mesh is tessalated. The square shaped grid was divided with SE-NW diagonal edge. It was possible to fine tune the mesh and textures and achive quite high level of detail despite low terrain resolution. This was the same for Terrainview utility and F4AF (i think all F4 versions were SE-NW, if i can recall correctly). But in BMS the diagonals are mirrored. Nobody cares. In great monsters terrain editor the mesh geometry does not fit textures but nobody cares again. Why?
The answer is simple - terrain builders are focused on textures, airbases are leveled automaticaly or with big reserve in all directions.Do u think original Korea map creator happily downloaded SRTM highmap fitting his deep waley idea? :
Another mystification is northern projection. We have heard this and that is impossible for a long time. Sinusoidal projection has the same shortcoming and advantages around eqator…
The same terrain sizes…Sorry for my english.

I handtiled the first areas way back then, Lukas. I saw the challenges you mention. No easy task.

I have Zaggy’s converted Russia data if required.

Share it out, Malcolm !

Interesting theater, to say the least! If there is some serious developement, I’d be happy to lend a hand!

Again, offer of help with textures:
An IL-2 modder made the best textures ever made for a green theatre in IL-2 for a north Norway map.
I could send him a pm should this be of interest and ask for permission to share his tex. They are almost 100/100 realistic compared to some reallife shots I saw of Fjordic areas.
Theatre was Murmansk, Barents sea and north Norway. -
This Theater would be an ice(pun intended) addition to the WIP’s in BMS.
But, as Toonce’s stated, it is only a working template to develop from.
I did some work on it to try to minimize the terrain “crunching” to the North due to the RL Lat\Long.
Maybe,as someone stated,a flat projection may be best for Falcon.
And,as Luk stated, “bending” the wireframe in L2 will not get us the desired elevation effect needed.I think though, that if you guy’s got together, you may be able to build on it!!!
Good Luck and have fun!!!

I apologize for necro-bumping this thread, as I know a bunch of you are going to click on it excitedly hoping that suddenly there’s a working Nordic theater in here somewhere. That isn’t the case!
This is mostly for Polak, although if anyone else has answers/ideas I’m certainly open to them.
I don’t know anything about terrain editing. However, I browsed through this theater for a while using Monster’s outstanding terrain tools and I have a question/idea. One of the biggest problems with the tiling of this theater in it’s current state is that it only uses a subset of the available tiles, and the way they are configured looks terrible. To that end:
1. Would there be any merit is altering the Nevada (or Israel for that matter) tiles from there current brown color to a white/winter color? I’m not talking about creating new tiles as much as just changing the colors from desert brown to snow white…
2. Having done that, then how much work is it to import those tiles into Nordic and have it re-tile with the new winter Nevada/Israel tileset? I couldn’t quite figure that part out.
I’m just sort of thinking out loud here, but I’m intrigued by the idea unless and until someone can tell me it’s not worth the effort.

If I’m reading Monster’s documentation correctly, it sounds like one could use the ModTerrain tool to re-tile a theater by directing it to the raw terrain files and having it rebuild the terrain…if I’m reading it correctly. I’m not sure I quite get it, but I’m brand new at this…

Be great if this does get to completion. Very interesting zone to fly in.

I can confirm, that it is possible to color correct an existing desert texture (using Photoshop), into an arctic one:
This example was done easily with only hue/saturation and color balance options. It wouldn’t take much time if one add a template of effects in “Actions” option in Photoshop and this way many tiles can be edited in short period of time.

We need Ted.
“TED, WHERE ARE YOU???!!!11!”
“Polak, to the white courtesy phone, please.”
Etc.
-
That looks great, Airbuster, and confirms what I’ve suspected for a while.
If we don’t hear from Ted soon I might just see if I can figure out how to do this myself.

Sorry guys, I have missed this topic altogether. Will get you something to reply tomorrow. I was busy with several things not to mention sending LasVegas to Dave , which I did.

You need to add Russia East data to the model. That was the major original obstacle, but was solved by Zaggy. The Russia East data was in Lambert projection, so it had to be converted. There are links on this forum to the converted data set somewhere….
