Formation landing
-
Hi,
I’m looking for a TE to practise formation landings. Does such a TE exist or is anybody capable/willing to make one ??!!
Many thx, Vordy

@Vordy Hi Vordy! You ever used the TE builder?
To achieve your training effort, learn to create a mission for yourself. This is a 2minute job.Frag a flight of two.
Create a short route .
Choose daytime and sunny weather.
Let the mission run with x64 to 30nm before landing point.
Join 3d (take number #2 seat).
Go in fingertip formation with your lead.
Happy training… -
In my experience the AI lead will choose an overhead landing. If you are after side-by-side formation landing you will have to break with him.
Another way to try side-by-side formation landing would be for you to be lead and call for unrestricted approach. The #2 jet will be vectored and you can just follow him through his approach to land together. There is no requirement that you as lead should have landed first so that should work
-
Also remember that slightly different laws of physics apply to the AI jet. (Simplified flight model)
So this may be difficult or impossible, depending on your relative fuel and stores.
-
In my experience the AI is pretty well-behaved once in the pattern. They will end up on the same glideslope, so it can work

This is not correct.

@Vordy
If you are able to fly in the UK time zone I would be happy to show you the break and practice with you (either leading the break for you or flying your wing if you wish to lead).I would add that (while I admit it is a little boring compared to having others with you) providing you ‘fly the numbers’ executing a break landing even in the basic single player landing mission will be more than adequate to practice your break pattern, even in the absence of wingman.
DM me if I can help further.

AI wingmen use the AFM?
Or the diff between AFM and non-AFM isn’t noticeable or significant. at low speeds and altitudes?

@Micro_440th
Thx but doesn’t work. AI does a overhead break. I’ve tried to break at the same time, but that’s not for practise purpose. -
@jayb
Thx will try your suggestion, didn’t think of that before. -

Thx but doesn’t work. AI does a overhead break. I’ve tried to break at the same time, but that’s not for practise purpose.It is possible to perform close formation approches with AIs … not land because AIs aims runway centerline, so you will have to perform a go around on short final, but approch, no problems … overhead or long final.
AIs are designed to fly asl cose as possible than a human leader so you should always have a bit of margin even when he extends the airbrakes.
Only real issue I remember is when he turns to towards the initial point for overhead while descending and bit hard at the same time … and this only when he need to perform a hight angle U turn (exemple: coming from west to land on runway 27).
Also, final turn is a bit steep when you are not in clean configuration. -

That’s not the biggest problem, it’s possible to land in formation on the left or right lane

When I make a mission with AI’s, they always do an overhead brake. How can I generate a long final ??

Not if you want to do it realistically.

Set weather below VFR conditions.
