Solved AS.34 Kormoran ineffective/max range wrong (4.37U1)
-
While in the Balkans theater/Balance of Power campaign, I noticed in the TacView ACMIs that AI-fragged TASMO flights were using their AS.34 Kormorans completely ineffectively-- every single missile was plunging into the water short of their target with the following message:
While testing the weapon myself, I noticed that acceptable launch parameters seemed way too generous, with a maximum range bracket starting around 60nm.

Will be fixed in U2

Hi, thanx for reporting!
Probably this can be fixed by adjusting the missile’s maximum range in DB and modifying a bit the FM. It could be that the missile is unable to pull the Gs necessary for the terminal maneuver.

OK I see now what you mean about not reaching target, it makes sense. The range for the missile is simply wrong. More than 60NM while the missile max flight time is set to 175 seconds (In missile’s FM file).
So, the missile’s range is wrong and this will be fixed, but I also suggest to not fire it in Popup mode which is basically made for Harpoons that are much slower and usually fired at greater ranges. It’s not perfect solution but I suggest to change the terminal guidance (WPN page) to skim instead of Pop, this way the missile will “slide” towards the target and will hit.
If you want to fix the missile’s range locally then you can open in any text editor the file:
\Data\Sim\Misdata\AS-34.dat
Find there “Range data”
And you should see this text:#Table Multiplier 3.60
Just change the 3.60 to 1.00 and that’s it, in 3D the missile will now have a more realistic range of ~18NM.
Edit:
In fact I see according to RL data that the range isn’t 18NM but more like 23KM which is ~12.4NM so I suggest to change the numbers in the FM accordingly.
In this table:#----------------------------------------------------- # number of aspect breakpoints #----------------------------------------------------- # 2 +0.000000 +3.141600 # # Alt = 0.0 # Vel = 0.0 +114228.000000 +114228.000000 # # Alt = 0.0 # Vel = 1181.5 +114228.000000 +114228.000000 # # # Alt = 50000.0 # Vel = 0.0 +114228.000000 +114228.000000 # # Alt = 50000.0 # Vel = 1181.5 +114228.000000 +114228.000000
Change all the 114228 values to 75417 (That’s range in feet basically). This will give you in 3D a right range of ~12.4NM and then using Skim terminal phase the missile should hit NP.
Cheers!

By doing this you change only the DZL , not the real range
Is the real range needs to be changed or only the DZL ?

Yes I know, but it really is enough for this purpose (AI and player both limited by the avionics to fire at that correct range).
Missile wise I REALLY don’t know, I’m thinking that those long range missiles to run a bit different than Mavericks or AA/SAMs, I mean in the sense that for example a Harpoon have a running engine throughout the entire ~65+ NM range of it, because otherwise he wouldn’t be able to fly low at 100 feet all the way and keep enough of it to make that pop-up maneuver effectively. So, I assume RL missile data should be inspected, I really don’t know.
And BTW, if we decide to make it fly like a Maverick (for example) then I guess we should also think about changing the avionics behavior… in fact we don’t have such a beast right now (avionics wise) that is like Harpoon - i.e Radar guided and can acquire ships including moving - But with rocket/range behavior of a Maverick…

@I-Hawk If it’s helpful, my research indicates that the Kormoran is more like a Harpoon in the sense that it has both a boost motor, and a sustain motor that fires for up to 100 seconds after the boost is exhausted. The missile is accelerated to Mach 0.9 to Mach 0.95 and that speed is maintained while possible.
Maximum range is either 23 km (~12.4nm) if fired at low altitude and 30 km (~16.2nm) if fired from medium altitude of 30K ft. There is also a minimum range of 8km (~4.3nm).
This site has more information on the missile, including its weight and warhead size, as well as information about its successor Kormoran 2, which replaced the original in 1991 with a larger warhead and extended range:
http://www.sistemasdearmas.com.br/asv/kormoran.html
(it’s in Portuguese but can be translated easily with Google: https://www-sistemasdearmas-com-br.translate.goog/asv/kormoran.html?_x_tr_sch=http&_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US)
I didn’t see any indication that it’s capable of a pop-up terminal attack on that site, but the CMO database, which refers to some additional printed sources to which I don’t have easy access, seems to think it can. Of course CMO is not infallible so take that for what it’s worth.
Thanks for the quick fix!
