China enters war - remove J-20 (STRATEGIC APPROACH)
-
When China enters the war, a huge amount of top fighters become active in the theater at the bases in Shenyang, Liuhe and the carrier Liaoning in the western sea. This generates a steady stream of enemy fighters (especially a J-20 suadron from Shenyang) and the best advice is to go defensive with your priorities and PAK zones. Nonetheless, it is desirable to take out one base so your squadrons have an easier time to work down the fighters from the other instead of facing the entire force.
In older Falcon times, my absolute favourite solution was to task a single-ship F-16 with Durandals, sneak in from the west and take out Shenyang. In the newer campaigns with all those SA-10 around the city even the lowest flying is not possible anymore - Chapeau to the campaign designers!
So I decided to take another approach: brute force! So let’s do some considerations:
One could decide to attack Liuhe, because it just has one runway and is easier to shut down. It also has just one SA-10 battery protecting it.
BUT: There is no good route to this base, you will early cross the streams of fighters on your way.
AND: The real dangerous threat, the J-20 are stationed in Shenyang. Here I cheated a bit to see threats exactly: I switched sid… I hacked into a neat chinese weather balloon to see threats.
So let’s plan an assault there. But first, the “easier” part:
TAKE OUT THE LIAONING (although it should be possible to sneak around it in the west)
A normal package of 3 flights should be sufficient (TASMO, SEAD, Escort). Of course, I took a more western route.
When arrived, the radar image wasn’t as clear as expected from the training but because of my weather balloon I knew the Liaoning is the upper right blip.
Though, I did something wrong and my 2 Harpoons hit a Sovremmeny (I think I should have set the search area to small, not large). But my wingmen were more able than me and hit the Liaoning. Last I saw her in my TGP, it was full ablaze. Though, at this time I was running from the little 30s on my RWR. Debriefing confirmed, that the carrier was sunk.Ok, now to the hard task:
ATTACK SHENYANG
For this, I planned many packages from several bases. I disabled “Set by HQ” for each squadron (so HQ isn’t cancelling any flight) and deleted sufficient packages to build up a huge force:
80th F-16CM40 4 OCA, 4 Escort
35th F-16CM40 4 OCA, 4 OCA
157th KF-16 4 SEAD, 4 SEAD, 2 Escort
111st KF-16 4 SEAD
122nd KF-15 4 Escort, 4 Escort
VFA 102 FA-18F 4 SEAD, 4 Escort, 4 Escort
VAQ 132 EA-18G 2 EWS
It takes a while and you need to choose some recognisable spots on the map for your waypoints. Also, be sure to set each waypoint to high altitude (30K) for fuel saving. After the attack, I can say it’s not good to bring the Growlers to the party, they got shot down very quickly - although they should be good against SA-10, I think the J-20 with their HOJ-capable missiles got them.
I think I brought enough planes up there to have a chance to break through the defenses. Here a video-link:
FalconBMS-Shenyang-1.mp4 (118MB)
Debriefing also looks good:
Conclusion: you don’t have to remove the J-20 with Mission Commander, just try it the smart way
EDIT: As you may guess, the video wasn’t my only try. You must have some luck: If the scrambling J-20 are downed fast enough by your escorts, the Growlers will survive and keep the SA-10s at bay (at least that was my impression).

@Atze-0 quantity has its own quality…
Anyway, I don’t want to be a pilot among this cannon fodder…

It wasn’t such a suicidal mission as you may think. Reviewing my savegames from mission start and debriefing I found that I lost 5 planes out of 52.
Comparing to the other squadrons which got fragged continued by HQ, the squadrons beeing part of the “Shenyang Raid” now have the highest amounts of aircraft available while the AI fragged ones have fallen back to one digit numbers.Remember: You have a very hard time when China intervenes over all your forces. Not taking care of the carrier and one base is almost no option.
Of course, the other base should remain active or you just postpone the problem. You want to work down the planes from one base and later from the other one.
Another interesting finding: Even with extreme defensive priority settings and PAK zone at zero, HQ will generate many suicidal packages against Liuhe. So maybe this would be the better target to prevent an overly drain of your airforce.

Nice job. Which Campaign is it by the way ?

@CheckPoint
Oh, I wanted to write it in the first post but didn’t.Rolling Fire at default medium difficulty (some call it “easy”).

@Atze-0
Thanks. On tweaked Tiger Spirit, after China enters with its J-20, I figured out a way to quickly end the war with an Heliborne Air Assault on key objectives.
-
Another approach is to add a couple F-22A Raptor squadrons to your Campaign, that usually sorts out the J-20 problem.

@Atze-0 Thanks for the “Lesson of the Day” on Tactics in a BMS Campaign. All information appreciated & I will have to try out in the future battles - Cheers
