Unsolved enhancement request regarding launcher
-
Yesterday, I lost all my configuration because I unfortunately unchecked “launch without any setup override” and I launched BMS !!! I was crazy …
to avoid this kind of problem again, it would be like to display a window warning the risk of losing its configuration…

Or,the launcher should create a backup file before overwriting the key file
-
(not to victim-blame but…) definitely keep regular backups of everything in Config folder
even BMS updates will overwrite some things there, unexpectedly
and definitely don’t expect BMS-Auto.key to remain untouched… I think AL will overwrite that file, even without clearing the safety-checkbox
[edit: if referring to ‘falcon bms user.cfg’ not the key file… I think AL only appends lines to the bottom – never overwriting anything above? if so, should be easily reversible.]
[edit2: of course I totally agree with you, all the key/cfg editing features should have been factored out into an “Alternative Config” tool, not the Launcher, from day one… but for now it is what it is]
-
There was a message warning about it but someone complained about it and I think it got removed so you cannot please every one for every scenario.
I think the majority who are having issues with this are those who are resistant to change. Its a new interface, we just have to get used to using it. To me its brilliant because I do not need to even look at my keyfiles, I couldn’t give a rats whats going on behind the scenes so long as it works in the sim. Its so simple to use if you just bite the bullet and go with the new launcher instead of hanging on to a configuration that is “old” school. My 2 cents.

I think this is the phrase that I had been looking for for so long since complaints about AL are instantaneous, I personally use AL from the first day and since I told the members of the ALA that I manage everything and everyone used it in previous versions of BMS, now that it is already factory implemented in the 4.37 installation our pilots enjoy an even more improved and finished tool, I have many complaining pilots on the wing and there is not 1, not even 1 most problematic that He has complained about AL, rather what they say is hell this is good. and that they did not see before how it was done to configure with the excel table that bms brought in tools.
So I support KAV’s comment, less resistance and more flights.

I’m not resistant to change, I just think some of the UX choices are unintuitive ¯\(ツ)/¯, but I am only one person, with one opinion (which may differ from others).

I’m not really saying this for you, it’s that the complaints about AL are constant and I’ve tried it with everything, I have 2 hotas, I fly with a keyboard and now I’m testing mouse profiles with UCR (universal controller remapper), I mean, I’ve tried all kinds of variants so that AL explodes and stops working, and it is not like that, AL continues to fulfill its function.
I remember those old days of setting up with the excel table and damn it’s like a bilateral testicle pain (both sides). AL improved my life so much and that of many pilots of our wing, we wrote a letter to @chihirobelmo in private thanking him for such a wonderful program, he made life much easier and much easier for those who only fly falcons. If you read this note and only fly falcon sporadically you will not know how grateful we are.
So don’t worry, @jstnj It’s not related to your topic, although you do complain more than usual about the work of the falcon bms team, but I take it as a simulation enthusiast who doesn’t know how to drain all that energy of complaining and complaining and post it here on the forum.
so wherever you are, fly more and less complaints.
greetings.

@VIPER-0 Without commenting on the merits of this thread, I would like to thank chihirobelmo for a game changing contribution to BMS.
-
@suhkoi69 Because like all french guys, it is on strike…
-
Just saying, I’ve had traditional BMS nuke my .keys a lot of times in the pre-4.35 days (and maybe it was sorted out before then because I was on a bit of a hiatus for some of 4.33/4). But back in the day, if you had a very complicated .key and with a bunch of USB devices and you didn’t have single one plugged in, your device sorting would be all messed up and you would have to remap. Because of this nightmare and as @Kavelenko mentions I got tired of killing so much time making .keys, I have been very appreciative of @chihirobelmo’s AL/L since I embraced it with 4.35. The other creature comforts of launcher for other apps and the shocking amount of time saver that theater switching brings are nice add-ons. I do get your frustration @suhkoi69, the learning curve is real on what exactly the Launcher overwrites and what it draws data from and better documentation on this may help old school guys that need to know what is going on under the hood.
-
@Snake122 I totally agree. I have dipped my toe in and out of (Falcon) BMS for many years. Unfortunately, before AL, it was mostly toe out: I would get the key file via Notepad and/or Excel just right for it to be naked the next time I started. Now, setup is a dream - sometimes the dream has a smoking snail, but I still wake up refreshed.
Thank you @chihirobelmo, and thank you BMS team.

You are clearly having trouble understanding what “complain” means, and that wanting to improve is actually a positive thing.
The BMS team are software developers and artists. The best software always comes through feedback and iteration. You (maybe?) realize that the userbase of BMS knows the high capabilities of the dev team, and we should all civilly work toward the best possible end results of the sim we enjoy.
We don’t need people like you gatekeeping every time someone has feedback. You’re basically stalking me around the forum commenting under all my posts, it’s weird.

That is a fine idea, and one additional suggestion would be if the AL warning message could list the files that would be affected if user presses OK. That could give some more transparency to what the AL is actually doing.
Now, I get that for those like myself who always leaves it unchecked it would give a warning every time we just want to launch BMS. Maybe some other UX design could be put in place. But my suggestion for the enhanced warning message remains
-
Works fine for me. Its just different. Its better and easier than old way. Once you get used to it it is a big improvement. I hope they just get rid of old way and it will help with the confusion.
-
@Icarus agreed, I think only having one way to do it will both eliminate confusion and allow a better concentration on the features of the launcher (and the documentation surrounding it)

You do not represent any concern for me and you do not cross my mind at any time, you can be sure of that. and one thing is very different to give a recommendation and the other is what you do. you complain too much and very often that is already common, there is not a day that I enter this forum and want to enjoy something good and new when I constantly see your profile creating new posts and it is not to celebrate or give support, it is quite the opposite, everything is, this doesn’t work, this doesn’t work, this is wrong, this, this. You really fall into monotony and as soon as I see your profile picture with your mouth open I know a complaint is coming. I have nothing more to say, just give you some advice, free is not criticized and leave the complaints and fly more. VIPER OUT

Humble idea
1/ Move the “launch without any setup override” checkbox away from the “Launch” button --> Less risk of unfortunate change as described by @suhkoi69 .
2/ Rename the “launch without any setup override” checkbox for something more meaningful like “Manage Setup with Launcher / Manage Setup directly in BMS or manually” --> so users have better understanding of the choice.
3/ Add popup windows asking for confirmation when changing the choice as described in point 2/ --> Additional foolproof from point 1/ + No annoying confirmation windows when clicking on “Launch” button.
my 2 cents
