Community-based Documentation Translation Project
-
Hi.
No Falcon BMS pilot out there can deny all the hard work that you’ve put into creating, updating, maintaining the documentation about Falcon BMS (I am learning by reading PDFs, there is there is a heap of information to digest but all I can say is that they are very instructive and precise).
However, there’s been a recurrent question on Discord servers and on forums to know if the BMS documentation is available in foreign languages, translated in the player’s native language.
There are several unofficial (though, extremely useful) translations performed by BMS fans but they all are split up on different forums.
Hence this suggestion:
Could you please consider allowing your community (BMS players) help translate the different documentation files (PDFs) as part of a community translation project? The number of questions (requests) regarding the availability of a documentations in other languages makes me think that you won’t have trouble finding volunteers to contribute to such “community translation project”.
To accomplish this, may I suggest to use Weblate?
This is an online (& open-source) platform that allows contributors worldwide to participate in the translation of softwares/games in other languages.Just like Wordpress, there is a premium hosting plan but the most interesting part is that it is also possible to install and use Weblate for free:
https://weblate.org/
https://docs.weblate.org/en/latest/
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblateExample for SiriL, an Astronomy Processing Software:
https://siril.org/docs/
https://weblate.pixls.us/projects/siril/siril-application/This example shows that it would be possible to have a online documentation while still allowing the BMS player download the PDFs.
What do you think of such “documentation translation system”?

@Blia Hello, I am not an authorized BMS voice, just a simple user… but I am the creator of the Falcon BMS mod translated into Spanish where I translate the briefing, the ATC Radiotexts and the TacRef… having said that, I never had any problems with make the mod, nor any kind of refusal from the BMS team… so I guess you won’t have it either… any contribution to the BMS community is always welcome.
I personally think that translating the manuals is a great idea… good luck in your project… regards

Hi @Apolo27
The goal behind this idea was more to let the BMS team manage the installation of Weblate (or any other similar platform of their choice) to then, let us easily translate the documentation into several languages.
I didn’t really plan to install it by myself. Some advantages:
- this kind of platform is dedicated to the translation of projects (softwares/games/documentation…) and provide convenient tools to help contributors translate strings
- once all the translations are completed (or close to it), the documentation (then, available in several languages) would be centralized at a single location
- contributors would be able to review other contributors’ translations and suggest changes (by typing comments to provide feedback on a source string, or discuss it with other translators)

@Blia The idea is great, but you should talk to a dev and present the idea, they value and decide the best for the future of Falcon BMS. They can also guide you and confirm if that idea is feasible and can be implemented.
@MaxWaldorf what do u think? -
For now, I will park the topic since our goal is to think of a contributive platform for the english documentation first…
Having 20 different tools to manage our stuff isn’t viable.
I’ll think about it when 4.38 time comes…
