GPU performance test
-
Hi, recently I bought a 7800XT and to my surprise, it performed much worse than my old 3070.
In case anyone has 2 GPUs (one AMD and one nvidia), can anyone please test a mission using the same hardware using the 2 GPUs? The heavier the mission, the better (like, several F15s on the ramp).
I believe we have something in our shaders that does not like much AMD GPUs. But I’d love to have some more confirmation points.
I know, very unlikely… but maybe some of you have it? Pretty please?
Thanks!

In the TE Benchmark, looking at the Left , I got 120fps/1080p msaa2x object detail 7 with a 7900xtx 7700x 32gb ram ddr5. By the amd Overlay, the gpu work at approx 40%, cpu at 37%. Made me think I had something wrong with my pc but after A while i found out the overlay dont tell you the whole picture. I have 1 or 2 core at 100%… so it look like im cpu bound?

@phboudreault My quick 2c on the lies of “percent utilization”
CPU: because of multicore, hyperthreading and spin-waiting, it’s hard to read too much into TaskMgr style percent-utilization metrics.
instead, focus on the “Sim” loop time and “Ren” loop timing metrics, from within the game. if either of those approach your FPS (60hz => 16.6ms) then you’re CPU bound.
GPU: as a general rule, the percent-utilization metric for GPU only has meaning when it’s running at its max frequency… if you know the current frequency and max freq, you can roughly compute the correct ratio… but the OS and monitoring tools don’t know it, so they can’t.

If you swapped the card on the same overall system, it’s worth running DDU to make sure any old drivers have been removed,
https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/If nothing else, at least you can rule out the prior Nvidia driver causing issues.

@airtex2019 thanks for the detailed explaination! I was using amd performance overlay and im not enought experienced to tell if its precise or not. I will retry later tonight and look at those details you talked about.

I can test what you need with a 7900xtx

For Nvidia cards, people should use nvidia-smi in CMD. That’s about the only tool I know that tell exactly GPU core and VRAM utilization. We are using it at work with DNNs running on CUDA and it’s very useful.

It sounds like CPU bound in your case not the GPU as you are on ground with a few f15 on ground. More draw calls…
You get similar or more fps when in the air right?
