PICO4 - how do I actually start BMS into VR 3D?
-
As per the title I guess! I can get into 3D but all I am seeing is a representation of my desktop display in VR.
I had it working fine using Streaming Assistant, but someone said Virtual Desktop is far better so I bought it and can’t get into proper 3D. Tried to go back to SA and it doesn’t work either!
Please… am I missing something obvious?

In short you need to have installed:
Steam + SteamVR
streaming app on your PC + client app on HMD. Two most common are VirtualDesktop and ALVRLaunch procedure for Virtual Desktop:
you launch streamer on you pc, app on your HMD, on firt connection on PC accept connection.
Once you can see your desktop in HMD just start the new BMS launcher (former Alternative Launcher).
There should be slider for enable/disable VR, Make sure it’s set to enabled, click launch button.
Full VR will kick in once you commit to the 3D world.Launch sequence for ALVR:
start ALVR streaming app on PC, client on HMD.
start SteamVR via button in ALVR.
accept connection in ALVR streamer
It shoudl show SteamVR dashboard, click on monitor icon on the bottom to have view of your desktop. If not press Menu button on left controller
Start the launcher, enable VR with slider and launch BMSIf for some reason you’re not going to use new launcher, you can enable VR in the falcon config files.
To make things more permanent across updates, copy VR section from the bottom of Falcon bms.cfg file to Falcon BMS user.cfg file and enable VR there. -

I have SteamVR installed, Virtual Desktop Streamer on my PC and Virtual Desktop on the VR.
When I put the VR on, I click on Virtual Desktop and after a second or two my desktop is shown and the VD takes over approximately half the display. Do I need to click on Open SteamVR at this time? Or do I simply start BMS in the normal manner?
If I click Open SteamVR I get to the Steam page (I can start ACC fine from here but no way to start BMS).
I f I start BMS from my Windows desktop, eventually SteamVR kicks in and says Falcon BMS next up… but once the sound comes through, the VR display is like a 3D world with a flat panel in, on which I occasionally get a frame or two of BMS 3D but it is mostly just black.
Frustrating, especially as I had it working previously with VD on my daughters partners Pico (about a month back) and yesterday with Streaming Assistant (albeit not great visuals)…

There’s no need to launch SteamVR, once you see your desktop in VD you can just launch BMS.
I’m assuming you can see desktop and BMS UI properly. Ie as big 2D window in VR space. If what you see are mostly blank frames then I’d suspect there’s some issues with latency.
In VD client options enable perfomance overlay. It should tell you what is totalt latency and where it spends most of its time. Unless you’re using cable connection, make sure yout HMD is connected to fast 5Ghz WiFi.
I have mine connected to dedicated WiFi 5 @866mbps. With my R5 5600X and RX 6800 I can push to godlike quality @150mbps bitrate with no issues. I’m a bit suprised as VD for me was pretty straight forward to make it work. -
@Xeno OK, thanks for the pointers - I’ll try again later. Shit of it is it worked fine in Streaming Assistant. ACC for what its worth is excellent, no problem at all.
Yes, exactly what I’m seeing, a big 2D window in VR space. When it goes to 3D is when it starts to play up. I am connected to my router via CAT6 cable for the PC, and on the 5Ghz for the headset. Router is in the same room, about 1.5 metres from my seat. I get a solid 866Mbps, never fluctuates. Using a 9700K and 3070ti, should be plenty enough? If it can run ACC, it should run BMS 4.37!
Thanks again, I’ll try again this afternoon

@Malc 3070ti should be enough, it’s about the same perf as my GPU. There’s another thing that might be worth to take a look at. Launch SteamVR, go to the VR video setting, per app overrides for Falcon BMS, check what is the resolution set. Maybe it’s pushing to something ridiculous. I’ve set mine for 3050-3060ppd depends of what SteamVR allows me to set. With sharpening set to 1.0 it should give fairly readable MFDs (even bullseye should be somehow decipherable).
Also it might be worth to check what’s in Falcon BMS config files, there’s a parameter for res multiplier, I keep mine at 1.0 and manipulate resolution in SteamVR -

Hey Malc, you are very close so stick with it.I have SteamVR installed, Virtual Desktop Streamer on my PC and Virtual Desktop on the VR.

At this point, you still see the VD overlay. Simply click the Left controller menu button (left most button on it) once, to hide this, then you are left with only your desktopIf I click Open SteamVR I get to the Steam page (I can start ACC fine from here but no way to start BMS).
Don’t open steamVR from here (although you can, it will open steam panels which you don’t need), BMS will call for it when it needs it, and you have set BMS to run in VR.I f I start BMS from my Windows desktop, eventually SteamVR kicks in and says Falcon BMS next up… but once the sound comes through, the VR display is like a 3D world with a flat panel in, on which I occasionally get a frame or two of BMS 3D but it is mostly just black.
Steam VR opens, then BMS will start. It may be confusing as to wheatear you are looking at BMS UI from your VD, or from SteamVR. If you see your pico controllers and can use them on BMS, then you are still in VD, and to get to VR in BMS, you simply DOUBLE CLICK, the same menu button on the left controller. Now you need to use you mouse to navigate and jump into the pit. You can use this technique to jump back and forth between BMS VR and VD. Also note that a single press toggle of this button brings you in and out of the SteamVR where you can look at and adjust settings.Frustrating, especially as I had it working previously with VD on my daughters partners Pico (about a month back) and yesterday with Streaming Assistant (albeit not great visuals)…
Below are my settings forVR from the …\BMS437\User\Config\Falcon BMS.cfg file, and a video I did some time back.
Note the controllers now look different in the latest version of SteamVR. -
@Fish44 @Xeno Thanks guys, but still no luck with 437, 437 Internal or 438 Internal. I’ll need to get in touch with i-Hawk on Discord sometime to see if I can work out why this is not working.
I had a look for BMS in the Steam VR video settings but could not see any mention of BMS to allow me to check specifics.
Thanks to you both for trying to help
-
@Malc Since you have Virtual desktop working from what I can see, there’s only 1 setting you need to launch BMS into VR, its the setting highlighted, (or I believe it can be set in the AL.) Then just run BMS, and steam automatically starts. After that you can work on fine tuning your other settings.

And we’re sorted! Out of shear desperation I deleted D3D11.dsp and let it regenerate, got into 3D flawlessly.
Lessons for today - don’t mess about with Streaming Assistant, go straight for Virtual Desktop. Don’t forget the old favourites too!
Performance is beautiful, solid 60fps (might need to disable Vsync) and butter smooth, can even read the small writing.
Thanks to you all again for trying to help, hopefully this thread will help others in weeks and months to come.
