GBU-39 SDB cant hit target
-
Still new to falcon working my way around… Anyway when I use the SDB it does not track to target. I pwr on the SDB’s in the SMS wait for them to align till RDY, PRE mode selected, master on laser on strpt selected fly till lined up on the HUD…… lol I have JIZ on the right side of the HUD wait till the caret is about middle and release then nothing. Am I missing something here? Any help much appreciated and yes I RTFM pg 182 and down.

you’re confusing too many things
- SDB don’t need laser
- JIZ is only for JSOW.
SDBs are Jdams so except for a few particularities, the second part of the Iams training chapter will give you cues on how to use them.
did you cursor zero? as instructed?
my bet is that you didn’t cancel cursor slew and the bombs go to your cursors rather than the INS STPT -
And as a INS/GPS guided bomb, you need to have the correct GPS coordinates of the intended target addressed to the bomb.

They are also really really slow. If you’re releasing near max range and waiting to see your bombs hit you’ll have time to go and make a cup of tea

Guys don’t confuse, SDB is actually more like a JSOW than a JDAM, and (I think) JIZ will be there as well for SDBs, because in code they are considered to be “JSOW like” so it can use all the special functions of the JSOW (Impact spacing, Impact Azimuth, EGEA etc).
Anyway, I think the OP problem is about weapons not being released… if that’s the case then you just need to hold the pickle a bit longer, it’s ~2 seconds until SDB will release.
-
I do confirm…JIZ will be there;)
-
I think the cursor slew might be the issue didn’t see that part, next mission I’ll try that out and see how it goes. I’m using the recon tool and setting the tgt strpts that way. They are stationary tgt’s, and weapons are releasing just missing the target
-
I don’t feel you really need JIZ for the bombs to hit target. I always pickle when the indexer is in range, with JIZ or not. It seems always to hit target.

I’m really enjoying SDBs, but are we absolutely sure that ‘JIZ’ symbol should be shown with SDB? It makes perfect sense since they are JSOW like, but would it make more sense to have ‘SIZ’ or something? Is there a real world source for this I wonder?
Also, do we know for positive that the impact spacing option should be there for SDB? Being point weapons, it doesn’t quite have the logic that a area weapon such as JSOW has…

We don’t have information about SDB. that’s why we have copying JSOW avionics.

Yeah, I guessed that was the deal. I can live with that, it’s probably close enough.
On a related topic, will we ever see the loft angle cue added to JDAM hud symbology? It’s supposed to tell you the loft angle required to bring you within the optimum release zone (R2Max).

Maybe later.
