Do you use smart scaling?
-
I am asking because without it, the planes are hard to spot. With it, they don’t seem to get much bigger as they get closer, and close in dogfighting feels a bit odd at times.
-
… yep … that is why I’m no longer use Smart Scaling.
-
Smart scaling is also quite detrimental for refuelling.
For spotting planes generally it is very nice tool, but for other problems I can’t really use it consistently. Right now it happens to on be since last week, but just for testing, first time in a year or two. -
Personnaly I use it, without issue to keep close formation.
-
Smart scaling is for pussies….
-
… yep … that is why I’m no longer use Smart Scaling.
So its only recommended not reallistic?
-
but without it objects should look fubared compared to eachother. Isn’t this the case?
-

The Smart scaling is not 100% linear. I don’t know the exact parameters, but it does not change the sizes when within close range. So it should not disturb the close formations at all. It is more of a long distance spotting and ID tool.
(Which you of course know and still fly impeccable formations…) -
Yep I know, but personnaly the advantage is better as long range visual so I keep it and I learned how to keep close formation without too much problem.
-
Boxer linked me to a university paper on the matter, so there is reason behind the function. Cannot find it, but I use smart scaling.
In the last Falcon-online Red Flag Korea 4.0, the only visual I had on human air adversaries, was through the TGP.
-
I kinda know what smart scaling is for. But hard to visualize it. Can anyone post some pics for comparison?
-
Before BMS 4.32, smart scaling was completely unrealistic but now smart scaling in BMS provides more realistic perspective / flight than without.
It is based indeed on universtity studies in order to compensate the fact that we have small screens
i personnaly use it and dont see any problems for formation flying
-
Same here… not only for Formation flying, also for finding tagets on the ground I can not live without smart scaling… 1,6m away from a 27" Screen you are happy about everything that makes things looking greater
-
So its only recommended not reallistic?
No … it is not a unrealistic feature (I would even say the reversal because is a compensation of eye acuity) … but personally, it gives me some “troubles” during flight rejoin maneuverer (sens of relative speed becomes wrong) … Again, it is only a personal feeling.
-
I also thought it was unrealistic and didn’t use it
but my squad mates talked me into enabling it and i was tired of those guys declaring visual while I couldn’t
So I enabled and acquired visual when they did as wellSince enabling it I never turned back and encountered no issues at AAR and close formation flying.
I think we need to use it to overcome the rather small size of our screens indeed.
So it’s not unrealistic imho to bring the sim situation back to real life level with it. -
Perhaps LOD flicker can be reduced, same as in DB edits by Mystic, A.S. and co?
-
I’ve always had it switched on, looking forward to trying formation flying with it off, I suck!
-
well, I dont use atm. I will wait for the rift and see what the resolution on that is like - if it is clear, then smart scaling should not be needed on it.
-
Ive been lucky enough to try a rift developer kit, it will blow your mind

First of all i second what Mav-Jp said. In previous versions of falcon “smart scaling” resulted in way too optimisitc or too small sizes , but with BMS its more to reality than without actually. Thus, all the LOD distance visibilities fixes in RF 4 (units, objectves, planes etc) … were based on “smart scaling ON” (See pictures :\Falcon BMS 4.32\Data\Add-on REDFLAG\XTRAS\Recommended Settings)
Perhaps LOD flicker can be reduced, same as in DB edits by Mystic, A.S. and co?
LOD flicker - especially noticeable with objectives - like buildings changing shape or texture with distance… all that (all airframes used and for ALL objectives) has been fixed in RF4.
