I had to spend some time to learn how to use Photoshop.
My main objective is to be able to do a Dirty Belgian MLU, that looks realistic. It’s quiet some work, since I have no graphic skills, I had to learn how to texturize and how to play around with some lights effects and variations in color density.
Here is what I came up with, those are all WIP, but I am getting there.
I tried to give the dirt this dusty effect, with some spots being more or less clean, my first mistake was to make all panels dirty (thanks to amraams remark I took another route). After fumbling around with PS, and taking some advices from Foxtail (thanks a lot mate!) I found myself having very different results.
For the first time I was … proud of my work, and decided that now I could show what I was doing, instead of just showing mediocre work (to my standards).I have for next project to do a have glass skin, I will base my work on the jets from the 480th FS (Block 50), but let’s finish the MLU’s first, and oh, I also figured out how to do some tailart work, was interesting to see how you can play around with PS …very powerful, I also made the painful mistake not to save my work under PSD …lost all layers … but steep learning curve that keeps me challenged, I love it.
Here is the original picture I inspired myself from:
Another thing that I learned by fire, is that it is fare more easier to work from a picture taken from one specific airplane, than trying to take many pictures of the same airplane. For example for dirt, the patterns are specific to each airplane, so I recommend to anyone trying to do dirt or texture work, to take one picture, that shows the areas you want to work on, and focus on that sole picture, else you end up like me, burnt after 2 days of frustration. So yeah, I tried with one example only, and it was far more easier.
Also did some tailart work … to have an idea, I also put the original picture from which the Celtic warrior was taken from to be applied on the tail.

looking already quite good imho Spooky.
If I may give you a PS tip: you could grain/pixelate an area/layer (with sand color perhaps?) and choose and high density for this (eg for the worn part of the inner wing to work on - because all over the skin is still quite clean), then use motion blur to smooth it out again, and apply this to the already made skin texture. Probably looks best with transparency set to around 65%. Play with color blending a bit for best effects.
Hope it inspires you work further,

Thanks a lot mate, I will try that out. I still need to acquire the language and the reflexes to that, thanks for your support

When I skin models, i use the same technique as when i do a scale model:
It’s easy enough to do with photoshop as welllightening the Inside of the panel with base colour + white
darkening the panel lines
spots of wear paint, panel discoloration to simulate one access hatch for instance taken from another a:c.
anything to break the monotony of the paint: -

It’s easy enough to do with photoshop as well
http://www.candyparty.com/ST/models/OJ/58_OJ_final.jpg…hmmm, not quite. Correct & inventive use of the details to get the look as close to RL as possible, requires much and much more knowledge and skills of the use of Photoshop. Not going to debate too deep (as you know how to skin very well ) but to give others a hitch to what might lay ahead: my Hud-mod consists of 23 different layers of imho complex PH-techniques. Only the combination of those works.
The same holds for high-class skinning.

Spooky, not a bad start for a beginner.
I’ve downloaded 2 of those pics and zoomed them in photoshop to see details.
So some constructive critism if I may.Fist of all, I rarely noticed the panel lines on your main skin,
(but in contray the panel lines on the tail are to heavy.)… see Red Dog’s pic, (nice model Oliver ;)) which might be a little bit overdone on the panel lines, IMHO,
but looks more real than your slighly visible panel lines.
Insim the slightly overdone panel lines are looking better, IMHO again.Next, the white parts of your skin are to heavy,
… I would make them less noticeble (maybe darker and/or maybe even thiner, and/or maybe reduce opacity)Finally what Red Dog said, it needs … “anything to break the monotony of the paint”.
Ohh, … and you are aware of those Aircraft Skin Creation Tutorials
at the bottom of that PMC page?
http://tactical.nekromantix.com/wiki/doku.php?id=falcon4:texturesHowever, all skinners have started like you.
With every hour you click in that damn photoshop you’ll get better and better. And while I see you are already catched by photoshop and skinning,
I’m sure you’ll create really good skins someday.Cheers,

Thanks Olivier, I really appreciate your in that in that matter. I one day came across your website where you expose your scale models, I for sure can use 1 or 2 advices from you ;).
I am going to try the technique you just mentioned and will see how it works for me.
Lazystone, thanks for your input, the critique is more than welcome, I count on you for that for the upcoming work. I totally agree about the panel lines, but you see the thing is that in Photoshop, the Panel lines and dirt looks exactly how I want it to look, you can really see the contrast. But when I go in BMS to check it out, it looks all more faded and the result is what you see there. So I have to find the “juste milieu” where what I see in photoshop has the effect I desire in BMS 3d World.
FanOfBMS432, I will try that out, sound very good, thanks for the input :).
For sure, with every click I somehow progress, thanks all for you time on this

A small step in the right direction, Spooky.
… now go ahead.Cheers,

The problem I now have is tempo. I approached it with the wrong method. I found out that I can’t work on it more than 2 hours a day, because after 2 hours I start to do BS lol. Now I saved my PSD’s and it’s all fine, tomorrow I will do both wings and will add some dirt “fatigues”
