BMS 4.33.1 F-18 Hud
-
I am not having much luck with the hud, my data is cutoff on the sides. I have read that changing the FOV may help that. I have changed FOV to 75 in the config manager with no luck. I have tried changing the Z axis option to FOV in the advanced options within the game no luck. I use Trackir 5 and have tinkered with that, no luck. Some have suggested holding the middle mouse scroll wheel and changing the view, when I do that nothing happens.
So all that said it looks like I am missing something, looks like Burner in this video managed it.
Anyone able to fix this yet ?

what i do is center your track ir, then slide my chair back, recenter it again, and then scoot back forward. Hud displays fully then.

That is exactly what I do it works a treat

Yeah Demo does that but the perspective then freaks me out.

Sorry to necro this thread but I’m having an issue with the size of the text in the Hornet HUD.
I use TIR so the FOV issue is manageable but the actual size of the text makes it almost impossible to read digits unless zoomed right in. The video linked in post #1 seems to have the HUD text perfectly large enough, so i’m wondering if there is a setting I can tweak to fix this issue?
Any help appreciated!

I can’t read it either if I have my view zoomed all the way out (via center mouse scroll wheel). I just roll it back ONE notch (i.e. zoom in one notch) and then I’m solid. It also makes visual target acquisition much easier and I have reliable intel that it’s a pretty damn accurate viewpoint in both the Hornet and the Viper.

If you’re doing the ‘lean back, recenter’ thing outlined above, try not leaning back quite so far. I have the same issue and have to find the ‘right’ balance of recentering the TIR position and having the HUD text large enough to read.
The other thing to consider …. if you wear glasses for close/med vision … is to have a prescription made for ‘computer glasses’. A prescription optimized for about arms length, about the distance to the monitor.

Thanks for the replies but I want to say that my issue is not tied to the head positioning or ‘FOV’ because I’m fairly certain BMS simulates that the HUD is collimated, i.e. the focal point is zeroed to infinity. This would mean that the actual HUD text size should stay exactly the same size in terms of MRs no matter what position your head is in, right?
Here’s a comparison of one of my screenshots I had lying around and the video from post #1. This might not be the most scientific method but I’m trying to illustrate the fact that the HUD text in the vid is perfectly clear but in my sim it appears smaller and more difficult to read.
(Pictured top, Burner’s F/A18 video. Pictured bottom, how not to approach the carrier  )I used a photo editing program to compare the last digit ‘0’ of the altitude readout in both pics. The top image’s zero is one pixel wider than in my shot and appears visually more ‘blocky’. And this is despite that in my pic the view is zoomed to a greater magnification.
Possibly related, the vertical speed indicator overlaps the altitude display in my image but it does not in the top image. Could be because I’m in the gear down config but I’ll have to investigate that further. Is it possible my install is messed up?
Also, the F-16 HUD text size seems to be fine and I can clearly make out the text in that aircraft even when zoomed right out.

Yes, the HUD stays the same size no matter where your “head” is positioned. But the mouse scroll wheel doesn’t control where your head is, it controls the “zoom” of you your eyes. Scrolling up will enlarged all of the text in the HUD, along with everything else in the 3D world.
Nothing appears wrong with your sim. The F-16 HUD looks fine because the HUD text is always slightly larger than in the Hornet and that’s just part of the sim.

I did note this in my post, despite the fact that in my image the zoom is more magnified than the top image, my HUD text still appears smaller.

So I’m guessing there is no easy fix or mod to increase the HUD text size?

What FOV setting do you use in the settings?
-
May be a nit, but when you’re sitting in an F/A-18 you can’t see any part of it’s nose…so you may want to remove that bird-slicer mod.
-
That’s part of the default Hornet cockpit model actually and can’t be removed. At least not easily.
-
I thought that was an add-on? I’m sure I’ve seen some sort of nose mod around here someplace…besides, it looks REALLY like a Viper nose…
-
There was a 4.32 mod that added a Viper nose to the Vipers. Now they all have them by default, as does the Hornet.
-
Bummer…gotta be a way to turn it off…
-
Not that I’m aware of.
