SDB vs JSOW

JSOW (presumably the cluster version) seems a bit overkill for a SAM site? Personally, an SDB per launcher would work, and would suit modern RoE/Doctrines better; precise and low collateral damage. They are the ‘snipers’ of bombs.
P, since I’m in the Hornet, routinely, I don’t have SDB capability. My substitute is the GBU-54. While I agree with you about ROE, there is one factor that in certain circumstances favors JSOW. That factor is , in the type of Weaseling mission I like to fly, I’m usually doing snap shots against pop up launches and lock ons. I want to get a shot off fast, often while evading. In that situation the shotgun effect mentioned earlier helps, I don’t have to “aim as much”. Of course, when the launcher is in a town or some such, I try to work myself in close enough to engage with -54’s

My apologies; to me BMS is purely a Viper sim, so my train of thought always defaults to assuming others are flying the Viper. I’d argue that pop ups against live SAM sites aren’t really a favoured technique so much these days, what with the high range and speed of HARMs, but if that’s what you like to do in the sim, go for it.

There was a debate after the HARM appeared about its lack of efficiency as a DEAD weapon - which is not its original task. It may not be current anymore with new SAMs and modern jamming, but excluding WW because of HARM doesn’t seem that relevant. Also, in BMS, it could be legitimate to explore other ways than the use of HARMs, way too reliable and aiming so easily that its SEAD real role becomes DEAD.
I can’t speak about the relevance of using something as heavy as JSOW for that task, nor considering modern context, though; I wasn’t trying to defend that in particular.

Lorik, I feel HARM has a place in DEAD, if only to aid location on the site and hopefully distract them. If I can keep the site from radiating while I close in. When I’m early in a campaign I’ll swap mu GBU-54’s for HARM. I also kind of agree that JSOW is a big stick for DEAD, but it is real handy in the early campaign scenario, especially as the Hornet I don’t have CBU-104 and SDB.
BTW, Planehazza, I believe I may have misused the term pop up. I was speaking of suddenly appearing SAM sites, not my attack tactics. And, compadre, in the Hornet I enjoy the challenge of doing S/D without HAD and the “fancy ordinance”, plus I get to land on the Boat -
Using HARM sensor and suppress for own DEAD task, it makes sense - I don’t know about real life and the place of Hornets in these tasks with jammers and specialized F16 around . Also, what SAM, mobile I suppose? But TELARs? Taunt 11 and 17 and watch the missile departure, I suppose not, so 4, 6, 8? Practically, I take you’re using HAS to locate them, but then HARM doesn’t remain under your wing while you look for white smoke, does it?
Didn’t say anything about JSOW, I don’t know, not to imply anything, but because I don’t know IRL. If I have people to man them, I don’t keep my vehicles gathered and vulnerable. AI, BMS… Anyway in BMS inventory is not the same problem. Unless you play a campaign where JSOW aren’t available…
Now if we’re speaking of BMS only, HARM is a DEAD weapon anyway. It’s too reliable and SAM operators don’t react to it.

Compadre, with apologies to Peanuthead(who hopefully isn’t thinking we’re thread high jacking), I enjoy these conversations.
To answer your HARM question, when I have HARM it often does stay under the wing “when I’m looking for the white smoke”. For a couple of reasons I’ll save the HARM for last if I can , mainly to retain the HAS capability.
I know that you’re right about JSOW/HARM/enemy behavior IRL, but I have to admit I look at such questions through the filter of what works for me in BMS. -

What about Lorik’s Korea? There is no HARM there except for blk 52 (later in one of the campaigns). You’ll be able to enjoy weaseling without really having to question if you have the choice or not.

I’ll get there, my friend. I’m building my “Theater Collection” back up from from my recent BMS crash/reinstall
