Stealthy MiG 29A in Instant Action?

I can tell you from personal experience that the first round of Mig-29’s “spawn” at 30k. So considering his radar scan area, the OP does not have his FCR pointed in the correct elevation to detect the Migs.

Agreed, Well then if they were at 23,000+ at 20 miles he wouldn’t get them there either.

In fairness to the OP, I gotta say that the first time I went into Instant Action today to test his issue, I got the strangest TWS response.
Bandits were close ( I had labels on to test) but TWS showed nothing until I pulled right 45 degrees and they showed up center FCR.
But nothing showing on labels there, that flight back to my left (labels) was still there.I can’t get it to repeat. So to the OP, perhaps you could keep an eye out for this.
Wish I could repeat it in case it’s my screw up. But the second I saw it I thought WTFrick?:???:
Then I thought, maybe he’s seeing a bug. I’m open to that possiblity.I ain’t trying to pile on his FCR skills so gotta mention this weirdness I saw once.

That’s where my 2. comes in

Your 2 cents has a lot of value. Glad you motivated me to revisit your post. I had missed where you mentioned about him scanning 25/2 at 20. I had read your post but that didn’t set in.
If I could repeat the oddity, my plan was to go to TE module next. I’m not going there unless it’s repeatable though as I’m not sure of all that was relevant at the time
I hit the oddity. I’ll try again in instant action module, later. But I suspect it was really the part where your glad he’s still posting.
Me too. -
Actually, it really seems to be an altitude thing. It also happens with other bandits way above me, for example with me at 30k and some MiG 25 even higher.
But even when I point my nose upwards the FCR won’t detect them. Or doesn’t pointing the nose upwards also move the radar cone upwards?
Next time I will try to get on the bandit’s altitude before trying to engage them. -

Next time I will try to get on the bandit’s altitude before trying to engage them.Radar cone is ground stabilized and does not follow the plane’s attitude… You scan higher by setting the radar antenna elevation, not by piloting your plane

if the mig is at the red rectangle then it’s not an altitude issue.
The red rectangle must be around 17kft to 22kftNow we don’t know how far it is.
It’s not close cause it doesn’t show up visually so it must be more than 10 miles? also depends on smart scalling settings.so the q is if it’s in the cone. side offset.
Anyone good with trigonometry?
Or any acmi recording?Edit: reconsidering…
wrong calculations.
It must be an altitude issue.
There is a water surface under the red square. u can see it barely.
that water surface must be close to the terrain level of the F-16 current position and looks like it’s about vertically underneath the red square.now using horizon the lake and the center of the red square as reference and measuring the distances. the red square must be around 40kft.
from water to horizon is 6,32mm and this is the 13.420ft from water to red square is 19,06mm thus 40.472ft. -
I finally got it. It was an antenna elevation issue. Now I can also detect targets above/below me. I haven’t found a place on my HOTAS for it, but I will find one. Thanks to everyone.
-
OMG
-
I do believe that is exactly what I said the issue was.
-
I now mapped ANT ELEV to the same HOTAS button that already controls MAN RNG (via different callbacks for press/release) in the assumtion that I will never need both at the same time.
However, I can unfortunately now set MAN RNG only to either min or max, because it does not stop moving when I release the button (release is mapped to ANT ELEV) and goes all the way to min/max.
For the TGP it seems to be acceptable to have only min/max zoom. In case I need continouus control I still have the keyboard. Are there any other uses for MAN RNG that require both continouus control and quick access?
The alternative would be to map ANT ELEV to a very coarse and unfortunately spring loaded rocker button on my HOTAS, meaning that I need to hold it all the time I want to scan up/down. -
@sungad hello, I have had the same problem in the current version of BMS. The issue appears to be the antenna elevation on your radar readout.
Since most fights are happening between 11k - 25k ft the radar typically defaults to levels around these altitudes.
The Mig 29’s appears to come down on the player from a high altitude.
A couple of solutions:
- Progressively work your way up in altitude during the fight. I usually do not see them until about 30k ft. If you do not have a knob or button to adjust your radar elevation you can do the following:
- From (keyboard) ‘M’ or MRM mode, press ‘C’ to cancel (MRM mode), then press ‘D’ for dog fight mode. Then walk it backward, press ‘C’ to cancel dogfight mode, then press ‘M’. If you are high enough you will see them on your screen.
- Look at your RWR, point your F16 up in that direction, and use the padlock (key 4) to find the MIG 29’s. Using the padlock and cycling options you may be able to find the MIGs.
- Having a button or knob to raise the antenna elevation would help. You will need to give your radar a few seconds to find the MIGs once it is pointed up.
I hope this helps.

I’ll exaggerate a little bit, but if you want to land, using the “lower gear” command will be number one option in the list. That’s where your 3. should be. Actually that’s the only real solution.
Of course, landing on your belly is a a solution too but… -
@Mach5Chris I solved the issue a long time ago… And the 29s are at about 30k.
