Ships need wakes/trails.
-
I’ve done a lot kuz takeoff/landings in recent days, GREAT carrier op! i think ships really need wake/trail feature to help immersion (after checking other sims).
We don’t need dynamic 3d wakes that generated by special gfx engine, code supporting flattened particle system may serve the purpose.
following link shows wake anatomy - the key elements are bow wake, stern wake, and stern turbulent. if code can support defining the wake particale start points at bow/stern, particle gfx stay time/size enlarging/ rotation. the glaring of wake sprays may be designed by particle texture alpha channel.

Hey CCC, how are you?
What we have currently is done by PS effect and generate a kind of flat particle. However, that is a kind of a simple effect indeed and as you stated, something much better is needed. The main problem with creating something more advanced is that it requires research and coding efforts of a new GFX kind of effect.
Maybe sometime in the future we will have a solution.
Cheers!

flat PS effect should be enough.
IMHO the PS effect and code could be similar to Vapor PS on aircraft.
-
Is there a way to turn off the smoke on some ships? Looks silly like a steam train.

Flat PS effect is what we have currently. Maybe it can be improved by some work - Maybe someone from community can try and work on that? I can explain all necessary details but I can’t do it myself (My hands are full :().

Yes you can. Open your Data/terrdata/particlesys.ini file with notepad and search there for $SHIP_ENGINE_SMOKE, once you find it, delete the entire section.
Or else there are ways to change the look of the smoke through that trail, but it’ll require some work… -
Great thank you. There can be some engine smoke on startup but when underway there is not usually smoke like that unless the ship is on fire or there is serious engine problems.
That exact ship class the Russian Sovremenny class underway with no smoke. -

I’m insterested but… can we define the PS start point(s) on different ships?

However, I’m almost sure that the smoke effect is tied to ship speed/RPM and if not, it probably should. I don’t know the properties of these engine, could be that most pictures you see on the web are from cruise sailing, while when at war ships will usually travel full thrust. Not saying if right or wrong but I have no idea, will check with the team.

I’ll need to check where the code is initiating those particles. My guess is that it’s defined somehow but I may be wrong, will check.

Hey guys,
for all the questions asked, check corresponding *.VEH files (e.g. “Sovremenny-Class.veh”)…
-
Regarding smoke, I worked security at a coal-fired power plant for a while. Some of the older stacks with fewer scrubbers or the like did not seem to be as efficient, and if whatever they put into the effluent was not there (you know those white puffy clouds you see for PR purposes?), the smoke was mostly clear, with maybe a bit of a greasy yellow hue (probably from sulfur). The new stack was very clean, and you’d only see heat distortion coming out of it - you could thus tell how good the scrubbers were and how clean/efficient the burn was at the same time. So, just because the ship burns fossil fuels does not mean it’s going to produce a heinous cloud of soot out of it. Unless it’s the Kunestov, in which case it’s probably all dirty, all the time.

thanx… lots cool new stuff there.
i think new code? can support/define ship wakes in the same way as Vapor code in ac.dat. -
Hey CCC,
I agree that vapor-like code could have been perfect for generating wakes for ships. However, that will require dedicated coding which I can’t do right now.
But believe me when I say… what I’m working on currently will have effect in a way that particles probably won’t be the way to go anymore for ships wakes… they will simply look weird at best -

What ever you’re doing we really appreciate it! Thank you very much!!!:headb:

Generally yes you are right, data isn’t my strong side. TBH until 2 days ago I totally forgot that those veh .dat files even existed. I was pretty much out of the loop of the 4.34 development, as I’m working on something “off to the side”.
However, PS I know, and pretty good (BTW particlesys.ini is data… and in fact I know a couple more files in the Falcon DB, so maybe you and me both should re evaluate our assumption about my “data knowledge” ?), so I just suggested that as a solution. But sure the veh .dat file solution is more elegant and will be more right and efficient (yea you won’t really notice any difference though). However, your tone sounded for some reason a bit offensive. Not that I care but I’m curious, is there a reason for that?

Nothing personal, I’m still pissed with what happened last year and being “dead” for most of you since then… Lots of people didn’t understand why I acted that way but barely nobody tried to actually talk with me, act like a friend so I could talk about how I was feeling those last months. After almost 15 years together, I couldn’t even say goodbye, almost nobody seemed to care how I felt and to be honest, it literally broke me. I guess friendship is overrated.

That said, can we get Spooky back as well? I thought he contributed some quality input to the forums…
…Pardon the O/T.
