Korea '80s Theater

This is great, i didn’t have so much fun playing Falcon in a while. I’am still struggling with the red tide, obviously:D, but at least i now have a working SEAD gameplan.
ROK F-4DSK cannot be fragged by the player, in either campaign, they don’t show up in the list. That’s a pity because i need them, and i’d rather plan their sorties myself.
Im with Molni, in that I would love to see some AARs for this. Especially WRT your SEAD gameplan.
Im still working on a plan that will allow me to log some landings, as I am having some…. issues… keeping number of landings equal to number of takeoffs.
-
Especially WRT your SEAD gameplan.
Mavericks, visual modes. Go in as wingman, let the AI lead draw fire, vis the launching site, bring maverick HUD reference on launchers, ID radars and TEL and fire. Evade SAM salvo, re-attack. You may wanna do a HUD markpoint so you can find it again easier. There is a very aggressive version of this, but it is rather silly and i’am not going to talk about it. You may want to have HARM equipped Escorts additionally to these, or maybe more Mav SEAD strikes/escorts, especially in areas with dense overlapping Air Defenses. Remember, SEAD strike goes for a specific SAM Btn only, SEAD Escort engages most threats on the way.
AI SEAD strikes/escorts with Mavericks are surprisingly effective, Pk of a Mav is much higher then an ARM, especially in this theater. Add to this the AI´s ability to “see and know all”(almost), and the enemy IADS will fall. Only problem is range
The main problem really is the flood of red fighters, when i start my next campaign i will:
In Priorities, set DCA to full, leave Recon where it is, and everything else to zero. PAK´s all zones but my side of the frontline to zero.
Figure out where the Center of Gravity of the enemy push(es) is, check OOB and attack every SAM in that area with Mav´s and maybe HARM´s to gain freedom of movement for your attack aircraft. They will need strong TARCAP´s for protection, don’t send in too small forces, play big. I use most squadrons for DCA/Intercept, i need to, i see no way of attacking all the airfields with the forces available, yet, i.e. i need to kill Enemy Aircraft in the air, though i’am thinking about taking out at least that Mig-29 airfield in a low-level suicide mission myself…
In Rolling Thunder, The F-16A unit in Kadena is too far away for effective CAP on the FLOT, let them guard your airfields.I figure once they are worn out a bit and their offensive weakens, i can be more offensive and start chewing at their hinterland IADS and airfields, we will see.
This theater is really brilliant, i play mostly intercepts, but the funniest sortie so far was a SEAD escort for A-10s. After i decided i had enough i turned back, and came across Il-28´s, during that engagement some 12-16 other bandits happened to come my way, and they all wanted a piece of Burns. Q-5, Mig-19, Mig-21, you name it. The wise choice would have been to run, but the Burns tends to be too hot-headed and he wanted more. I gunned 3 of them and damaged more when a Q-5 finally managed to gun me down. It was epic though, the ACMI showed some 15 aircraft on me.
I wish we had a F-5 3D cockpit, i’d love to fly them with nothing but guns and 2 papas…
Will destroyed bridges slow down ground assaults in Falcon? I don’t remember how it works in this engine, will they just drive through the river when the bridge is gone?

That I what I planned, a much different environment and challenge even I set the same force ratio and old stuff on DPRK.

Amen.

I have no idea but this would be an unfair tactic because of limitation of engine and lack of bride laying capility on red side. In the future relases maybe I should consider setting somehow very low repair time, I do not wish to set literrly unlimited HP for them.

IIRC, it used to work in original Falcon 4.0. When a bridge was out, the battalion would have to wait for repair or take a different route. Haven’t tried it in BMS. It would be interesting to know if it still works though.

I noticed that most bullets just bounce off the SU-25, very similar to her grandfather:D. Is this a BMS thing i never noticed or part of the 80´s theater?
-
I flew my first mission in 1982 Iron Forterss. I managed to fly the target but I was hit and heavily damaged. The engire fire light were on and I exploded while I tried reach at lest the FLOT. I exploded but the debrief said Viper is collided with Viper. Is this how is modeled the effect of fire? I have never experienced this because I flew only a very few mission with BMS4 so far in damaged state.

Well, I flew another mission in your Rolling Fire campaign today Molni… Things started off well, set up the priorities sliders for what looked like a decent start up, SEAD flights tasked across the board…
planned the flight path in BMS, then took it to WDP for performance data. loaded back into BMS, added some PPTs to the map.
Things started to unravel about 4 minutes into the ramp start. mayhem and destruction in the skies maybe a mile from Osan. Not the best preflight airshow, seeing some vipers shot down by dastardly -21s.
I was holding short at the time, and just hit the burners and swung onto the runway, after I saw that bastard was going to get away. ATC was not impressed… ran him down in a stern WEZ for the -9M, he turned into it but too little too late. scratch 1!
at this point I came out of burner and held max endurance, as I was about 5 minutes ahead of the TOT caret. Thats what happens when you go out for vengeance, I guess.
After a minute or so of holding, I spotted a pair of J-5s on the radar only a couple miles away… got them visual very quickly, but I didnt want to chase them back into friendly territory on burner. Another flight engaged them so I turned mine leisurely back to the FLOT. A little too leisurely, as I discovered I had wasted far too much time on the J-5 sort/intercept, and was now about 4 minutes the other side of the TOT caret…
I had my best go at meeting the 1250 knot ground speed required, burner in a dive for the FLOT (and the DPRK’s 7th AD Btn), although I pulled back to midrange throttle around M0.94 - wingbags and AGM-65Ds are not made for 850 knot dives XD!
passing back through 18,000 MSL I rippled off 3 mavericks into the area around the STPT, using the VIS mode. I could barely make out WHAT I was shooting them at, but it tracked and they looked sorta like trucks so I figured it was better than jettisoning them in some random dogfight. Passing over the FLOT and descending at quite the rate, there was the usual RWR lighting up like a christmas tree, really going nuts… so I decided to hoof it back to safer territory.
A few -23 spikes on the RWR seemed to think following me was a great plan, and I decided to oblige them in their desire to meet their maker. Turned back into them about 10 miles the friendly side of the DMZ, dropping stores after trying (without luck) to achieve the high aspect AIM-9M shot. Unfortunately, it seems my RWR underestimated the number of FCRs following us. My AI wingman ended in an impressive fireworks display, and I ended up bailing out after several R-60s were inbound on my jet.
Adding another 0.3 hours of flying time, all up. Although, still not a landing in the 80’s theater…
I did note that WDP throws up a number of errors trying to open saves from the 80’s theater. Might wanna see if some of those can be resolved?

This is caused mostly because you are flight leader and SAMs always target the first AC as well as incoming fighters. At least I played a campaign at until the 7th and 8th hour. After some SAMs have been disabled and airspace become less crowded your chance of survival is strongly increases. Of course with manual mission planning. You have to destroy only 3-4 SAMs to make a big hole into heavy SAM line. Of course you have to fly further because of “detour” but it is worth. ATO is simply not enogh smart plan flights above SAM free zones.
–--------
BTW in my first mission I was downed because only my plain stupidity. I went after an SA-3 - only against launchers - with AGM-65 even I had chance to simply evac after I released my Mk-84s and I did this too low…
The manual mission planning is more important than ever. Even the AD is working better a single or very rarely two heavy SAMs are not able to deal alone with a 8-12 ship package. Sooner or later not your AC will be targetted. The most easy option is send your AC or other fligth just a btit ahead then you can act quite freely.
In my flight it was amazing to see a pair of F-14s about 1 mile ahead when they launched AAMs and I saw the drop effect from a bit far from outside.
I forgot to mention even the SAMs are hidden in briefing window you can see estimation about SAMs, thanks to the original creators this combination works very good. You can know about the size of possible SAM threat but you do not have exact intel…!

I’ve found this theater to be particularly brutal…

Should I create a bit easier one? I do not apply more SAMs as stock theaters the only difference that SAMs in my campaigns simply functional. The AAA threat except radar guided AAA is much, much smaller as well as most of IR AAM is weaker now in range and in IRCCM either. The different role scores, ATO and OOB count so much.

No, I like it. Im sure if I just start flying more professionally, not pushing boundaries and taking risks so much, that I will get to complete a mission.
Just flew another one, yup you guessed it - shot down by a pair of MiG-23s.
What did you do to the AIM-9M, Molni? it feels like its not an all aspect missile now.
-
Okay, just had a rather unusual end to my current flight. Im not sure about posting it in the tech support forum, seeing as it was in your theater Molni.
Ive not seen this before in stock korea… although I guess that is not a good metric for determining whether the bug exists in stock korea. Certainly I have no idea how I can replicate it.
The sim simply paused. Much like the pause option, but without the text at the top of the screen, and without the pause key letting it resume.
The sound is looping what was playing, which was (fortunately, for my sanity) only engine noise.
A very great shame, too, as it was on descent from my first successful mission in your theater, too. STILL no landings in the 80s korea theater…
Have waited about 10 minutes now, and it is not doing anything new. Interestingly, task manager does not seem to think anything is wrong (no “not responding” markers on it, no pop up window saying that windows is waiting, etc). Not sure what to make of it.

It is still an all aspect missile I just nefred the seeker range about 20%.* If the target closing very fast with close to 180 aspect angle you simply do not have time to lock and launch. If the target does not use afterburner the lock distance is simply smaller. In RL not every cases was possbile a lock for 180 aspect, just try with 160-150 L/R and you get much better chance. This is also true for other all aspect missiles. The all aspect capability in RL does not man that 180 without any restriction. This range and angle dependency means that if you aim the target in a turn it can loses the target much more easily the missile. This is why worth to dodge yourself at least a side launch position but of course the best is behind the 3/9 line.
Even with the best IR missiles against target with dispenser the combat is not “launch = destroy” you have to fight for make more likely the kill as had to do in RL that time. Even today during training many times you can see even with HOBS capable missiles the pilots dodge themselves far beind the 3/9 line…
*The range of R-73 (AA-11) was nerfed about 35% and even with seeker range is very close in capablity to AIM-9M and better than AIM-9L because of better IRCCM and it has much superior HOBS and kinematics.

Yes, many times is worth to abort the mission - of course you can force abort the rest of the package - and save your AC for a next mission. Even you do not destroy the target and mission rating won’t be excellent in case you killed some SAMs or fighters next time you task can be easier.
My MOD changed totally my aspect, my first question is always “where is my package”. It is always still to be attached to a bigger group.

I have experienced this issue literally with any Falcon version maybe except with AF but I do not remember exactly. It is very, very rare and I have no idea what can cause. During my test I flew only some hours in campaigns but I have never experienced. Seems to me a random issue.
Try to refly the mission. -

Try to refly the mission.Just reflew it, and you will be happy to note I have FINALLY landed in your theater!
Now to have a landing after a successful AG mission to balance it out!
-
Well, still no AG mission success yet… got rather frustrated just now, tried to take off and upon taxiing onto the runway, the jet blew up. Checking the status screen, the runway was destroyed (apparently). This didnt stop the AI from using it though.
I dont think this is actually specific to this theater, but usually the enemy dont hang out over our airbases for hours at a time either. I need to tweak my starting sliders for a more defensive outlook.

Try to refly the mission.I’ve had this issue in stock Korea and in Balkans …. for me almost certainly related to graphics/frame rates. Once the graphics load builds up and/or the FPS drops too low, the screen will lock, but the outside world soldiers on … you can click buttons, make radio calls (Q1, for example), even fire missiles … you can’t SEE any of that because your screen is locked, but you can hear it. Often (not always), this will clear up and be normal in a short time (few seconds to a minute or two) … and sometimes not. If it happens once in a flight, it seems likely to happen again in that flight.
In one case it seemed to be some ‘bug’ in a particular TE as it occurred regardless of my graphics capability (two different PC’s) and cleared up once outside of a particular area of the map.
Just random observations after flying with this issue for sometime over the past summer (winter for your Blu3Wolf).
