Easiest BMS install and setup guide for a noob
-
Hi
Can anyone point me to a link/post that goes through the basic steps to get 4.35 installed and working please?
Just downloaded Falcon 4.0 from steam - not played it as want to only use the BMS mod, sorting out a way to open the torrent file for 4.35 (assume I will have to download BitTorrent?) - is it all self explanatory once I do that? If it is no worries, just wanted to check there wasn’t anything else I needed to do with the Falcon 4.0 file structure before running the 4.35 setup.
Thanks

Download Bittorrent (free). Once you download the BMS Torrent it will Download BMS 4.35 for you and create a “Falcon_BMS_4.35_Setup” folder containing (and this is important) a BLUE icon “Setup.exe” file. This is your initial installation “Setup” file to run (you install BMS elsewhere, your choice) and this folder is where you point subsequent updates when they install (U1/U2/etc.). It’s all layed out here, read that and you should have a good understanding.

Thanks for the help and the forum link Icer - unfortunately my AV (Eset) didn’t like the BitTorrent install - I will look into alternatives as not used P2P/torrent files before.

You may also get false positives on BMS exe’s as they are not MS certified files, ignore. If you get Bittorrent direct here I would not worry about it and force the AV to let it pass…

That direct link helped thanks Icer - I was trying to downoad the newer ‘Web’ version apparently. 4.35 installed - joystick (know its now ideal but starting with a TM Hotas as only one I could find in stock) arrives Tues next week so starting with the manuals first…. one page at a time.
Thanks again for your help, really appreciate it.

Happy to help, I know how overwhelming BMS can be overall, so getting it up and running should be easy. I will recommend 3 pieces of software to compliment/augment your BMS experience (all free). First get Alternative Launcher 1.60 for ease of HOTAS setup and also acts as a front end for a lot of BMS “stuff”. Next get Weapon Delivery Planner and install, point to your BMS install. Finally (and you likely won’t use it for a while) is Mission Commander, which is an extremely powerful tool for Campaigns (and TEs). There are other apps like Weather Commander but this is plenty for now, trust me…

You shouldn’t need BitTorrent … just download from the MediaFire web host, listed on the main install page?

=>
https://www.mediafire.com/file/unjw7xj1aelvl97/Falcon_BMS_4.35_Setup.zip/fileThe good folks at veterans-gaming.com put together a nice walkthrough here… incl recommended graphics settings.
https://veterans-gaming.com/falcon-bms-434/They usually end up hosting a download mirror too, but looks like they don’t have 4.35 there yet.

Thanks for the links Icer - just spent my first night sat reading the training manual……then spent my sleep flicking switches and trying to find panels
I have just posted on the Joystick forum where the Alternative launcher orginates - I feel ashamed to admit it but my computer skills dont extend to backing up registry files so I have asked if there is a post somewhere walking someone through that bit - if not I will crack on with googling it.
Hope the launcher will help with my Hotas setup problem - BMS standard setup is ignoring my throttle axis and only giving me the finger rocker switch on my T.Flight Hotas One as a throttle option which is less than ideal.
I’m hoping the Dash 1 will cover topics like - what is the normal idle speed (% rpm) of the training F16 - as I don’t even think my throttle is affecting flight speed correctly.
Despite the above last night I skipped the ramp - launched the training mission from runway and somehow took off and landed OK - thanks to you and the BMS community over 20 years after my first successful take-off in the original Falcon 4.0… -
Thanks airtex - first time I tried the mediafire link my AV kicked up a warning so I closed the window and left it - but just gone back to it and the download started fine. This will be ideal as a friend of mine who wants to join the BMS community has also had an issue with BiTorrent - I will pass on the link.

I simply DL each into their own separate folders in my x:/downloads/BMS 4.34/AL 1.53 and x:/downloads/BMS 4.35/AL 1.60 , then unzip them to same folders, send the Hub.exe as shortcut to desktop, rename the shortcuts for each version, then double-clik the shortcut and AL runs! I’ve attached my file layout, you can’t see that AL 1.53 is under x:/downloads/BMS 4.34 but it is. The crossed out files are only for my CH setup and you will have something different, hence me crossing them out… HTH!

I just found your earlier post in the Joystick forum on this and tried it - it has worked great without having to mess with regedit.
Can’t thank you enough - its enabled me to set up my cheap Hotas for the time being, sorted the throttle issue and I can now pinkie shift to double the button count. Give me 6 months and hopefully I’ll see you on the ramp in mp sometime to thank you properly for all your help. Next job is finding a list of the abbreviations/acronyms used in all the docs…… I have worked out what RTFM means though -
Glad it works for you now but I do not touch the 4.35 (or 4.34) installations. It is run from a folder completely separate from my BMS installation(s), as are WDP and MC so a uninstall/reinstall of BMS has no effect on these apps… Pic of both running away at same time blissfully…

Here is a PDF of acronyms used in BMS.

thanks

Thanks mj - I’ve looked for this in the 4.35 docs and it isn’t there - would be really useful if was included as standard. I now know what WOW means in an F16

Morning ICER - I’ve taken your lead and moved the AL 1.60 folder and the exe from outside the BMS 4.35 install folder (don’t have a 4.35 install) - I had to re-check a few boxes in the launcher (I have mouse freelook disabled and no pilot model) but it still launched with the T.Flight settings and the throttle working properly.
Had a quick training spin over the Daewoo factory before cracking on with my work……
