Not sure this is where this belongs as it could be a suggestion depending on the answer. I use two separate sound cards in my system. One for the main sounds in the sim, and the other for VOIP such as Teamspeak, Mumble, etc. I do this so that I can control the volumes separately. I also fly MSFS and X-Plane online using live ATC from VATSIM or IVAO. Having the two sound cards allows me to use a headset to speak with ATC and have the sim sounds coming through the speakers. That way if I have trouble hearing ATC, I can turn the volume down on the speakers to hear my headset better.

My question is this: Is there a way to force IVC to use a separate sound card so that I don’t have reconfigure my setup to use it? Teamspeak and others allow one to select the device that it uses, so I know it’s possible to code it that way. If it’s not possible at this time, might I suggest that it be done in future updates?

You shouldn’t need to use 2 cards, just turn the comms knob up or down in the pit….works like a charm!

The IVC in BMS is great. Great sound quality and funktionality.

You misunderstand. I have all my VOIP programs set up to use the second card so I can separate the volume control in my OTHER sims. I can make it work for IVC by unplugging the headset from the second card, replugging it into the main card, and then reconfiguring the sound in Windows to use just the main card. Then if I want to use my other sims, I have to go back and undo all that and go back to my original configuration. Then if I want to use IVC, I have to switch back again. What a pain. All it would take is a setting in IVC, or BMS to tell the system which sound card to use for IVC. I know it can be done. Other programs do it.

I know I don’t NEED to. I WANT to for the sake of ease of use.

I see, not sure if it can be done. Have you looked over the IVC section in the manual?

Many times just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Thanks for the reply.

Currently, it is not possible to directly tell IVC which soundcard to use. However, IVC honors the Windows “default playback device” vs. “default communication playback device”. If you have marked one soundcard as “default communication playback device”, the IVC client will use that card, while BMS will use the “default playback device” at the same time.

However, the problem is that this currently only works for the human IVC. The AI does still use the BMS internal sound code, hence the AI playback will still use the “default playback device”.

So no clean solution here right now, but it’s on the ToDo list.

A related survey question for everyone…

If you had the ability to pick sound card for use in IVC explicitly, is it fatal if the selection sets both the capture and playback to the same device?? In other words, your mic for IVC would have to be plugged in to the same card as the one you use for listening to the radio with…problem, or no??

                          –
                          Cheers,

                          Mark.

Not fatal…. The inability to split those functions among different cards would not be a deal killer for me. But I would like to have all radio comms (including AI) on one card and all other sounds on another.

Bifurcation of in-game generated sounds as far as output devices are concerned would be a change internal to the game. The IVC use of sound card devices is handled (or would/will be) in the separate IVC client utility. My question was for the utility…not making any promises about the internal stuff although I immediately “get” why you’d link the two ideas (…but I’m not the sound guy for the internals).

For me: Problem … but not fatal. IMO, I can deal with it! 🙂

Got it… original point still stands… not fatal and I think most would rather have something like that sooner than to wait for a more complicated solution later… but as you know… you can make some of people happy all the time and all the people happy some of the time… (well at least around here) 😉

please excuse my ignorance but, can anyone define the abreviations ‘AI’ and ‘IVC’ for me?
I’m new and just tryin to figure it all out.

AI is Artificial Intelligence, the computer controlled pilots who comm with you in 3D

IVC is Internal(?) Voice Comms - the voice transmission program which is simulating your in-cockpit radios
