F-18 Hornet WIP
-
Presenting the WIP F-18, lots of things to iron out but here’s to a more accurate representation in BMS
callout to any 3d modelers for some help regarding the hornets intakes and some general 3d modeling tips. Communication through discord would be preferable -
@okayasugf hello !
Nice start !
If you need any help just let me know.
Do you have 3dsMax for LODs creation and animations ?
Radium
-
@Radium will be using blender to make the model and animations, then LODs creation will be done by a friend of mine who has 3dsmax
-
@okayasugf Good !
Don’t forget that DOF and Switch phase is kinda long and complex, especially for landing gears, to have something clean.
You can’t animate on Blender and export it on 3dsmax then into LOD format.
Falcon only use DOF and Switch helpers to create animations. Other 3D software native functions are not recognized by LOD format.
I am sure that you know it, but I prefer to tell it at first !
Radium
-
@Radium i have checked with my friend and when model is exported to fbx, 3dsmax has all animations
So the only problem would be the DOF and switches creation. -
@okayasugf - note that it looks to me like this is a mash-up of a Super Hornet and a Charlie…you have the inlets and back end of what looks to be a Super, but the LEXs of a A/B/C/D. Minus the Fences.
-
@okayasugf yeah I just meant : don’t waste your time to animate on Blender : it is totally useless in the end !
-
@Stevie i think he only did a primitive model ️ some people work by enhancing primitives/ some other like me create precise meshes from the beginning. Everyone has it’s working methods !
-
Blender will be supported at some point but not just yet…
We’re working on it… -
@Stevie still working on the rough model right now, gonna re-topologize then move on to uv-unwrapping.
-
@Radium well, blender support will be added in a while then it may not be useless to animate in blender
-
@Radium - it’s not a bad start…just need to use the right references!
-
@Stevie Hello,
you didn’t got what I meant.
I understand the way he is working : he does a basic mesh, just to have a start, and he will refine everything after.
Nothing is final, with what you see

@okayasugf Never heard about that ! It’s clearly not in the plans of anyone as far as I know it
Again, I do models for years with this sim, I just intend to give you some pieces of advice, not avoid you do do mistakes I did in the past.

@Aragorn ok, that’s really sad, this just killed my day.
-
@Radium
Regardless of software used, I doubt that anything is ever going to compete with your modelling skills.Although Blender will broaden the scope of submissions, your examples of modelling will still illuminate 3DSmax as the “go-to”.
-
@Aragorn No you don’t get it :
-
I absolutely hate everything about Blender, from ergonomy of modeling to material management or unwrapping… Everything of Blender is to me rubbish and messy.
-
Since Blender is a freeware, my fear that one day, dev team decides to make it the software of choice for BMS.
-
Then, especially with upcoming PBR and other 3D modeling assets, 3dsmax may become obsolete, and we may not be able to update models that were made in the past.
So, my worry is not really about Blender itself, it’s more the probability that 3dsmax could become obsolete.

@Radium - there are features of two very different model Hornets in your primitive. The Inlets are definitely shaped like a Super Hornet.
The LEXs are shaped like a Legacy A-D model - with the compound curves. The LEX on a Super has a single continuous curve.
Not sure which you are trying to model - a Super, or a Legacy. Here’ a couple example 3-views -
Super Hornet:

Legacy Hornet:

Note the differences in the inlets in particular. Plus the Super is a lot bigger aircraft, in general.
