What's the best VR for BMS ? Pico 4? Or Meta Quest 2?
-
Contemplating to try VR. Problem is: what to buy? Have seen some extravagant prices, which I refuse to pay. So, now looking at the Pico 4 and the Meta Quest 2. I think the Pico 4 is better, but what do you guys think?

@Doc0301 I can’t comment on the Pico. I was a HP Reverb G2 user. Then I switched to the Quest Pro. Absolutely the best move. No sweet spot just edge-to-edge clarity. People say it has a low resolution but that’s comparing apples to pears. The G2 has one panel across both eyes and there is a fair amount of that panel that isn’t used. The QP has a dedicated panel per eye, i.e. 2 panels and so there are fewer wasted pixels hence the lower pixel count. Bump up the supersampling to 1.2/1.3x and it’s perfect.

@scubapics Really that’s interesting! You make a compelling case. I actually didn’t know the g2 uses one large panel for both eyes

@Doc0301 Here’s @scubapics thread on observations of the Quest Pro. I would say that I think without first hand experience with the Pico 4, I would say Reverb G2 and Pimax 8k X are clearer than a Quest 2 . By reputation only of the Pico4 and no hands on experience, I would go for it with flight sim purposes over a Quest 2. You can debate if you were going to do more standalone VR gaming, the Quest2 has a better library and more accessories. But if you are mostly going to tether to your PC for flight sims, Pico4 is the better choice to me.
@scubapics How as been your experience with the darkness haze that the pancake lens of the Quest Pro? That seems to be the largest complaint about the Pico4 here through the lens on night missions. I definitely want to try a pancake lens VR sometime but just haven’t had the budget to try right now when honestly I am very happy with my Reverb G2 at 1.3-1.5x . You are right, there is something to be said about the wasted pixels that it, the Rift S, and a few other headsets have done, but I spent the money on the 4090 instead for some future proofing instead of chasing other headsets. As long as the power connector doesn’t melt, I’ve been pretty happy with that decision.

Pico4 would be a very good choice in my opinion.
OK FOV, awesome stereo overlap, pancake lenses with good clarity. For the price you can’t go wrong.
If you can stretch the budget, quest pro.
If you can stretch it even more, pimax crystal
If you’re the ultimate baller, Varjo XR3 Focal edition -
Thank you all for your responses.

@delenda
Very interesting. Can you give me your pc specs, especially the graphic card you are using? Do you have any performance issues? -

@Flow32 @delenda what’s your experience of the night haze caused by the pancake lenses? @delenda interesting over the G2 and 8k X, since I have /both that makes me very interested that the clarity is best from the Pico4…
What’s the night haze? Haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary.
-
@delenda as explained in this post. The OP of that thread was using a Pico4. One of the several reasons fresnel lenses are used on most VR headsets is that they help collimate the light better and limit some of this dark fogging effect. If I had a pancaked lensed VR, I would do an one after another comparison for myself on a night mission.
-
@Snake122 hmm strange, no, I don’t notice anything like that
-
@Snake122 the darkness haze…yeah that. Not the best.
