Ship Anti missile defense ineffective?
-
I was observing that U.S Carrier Strike Groups can’t stop a simple 4 missile strike from Tu-22M.
In best scenarios they shoot down 1 or 2 missiles, the others run through the “defenses”…
Aircraft Carrier CIWS Phalanx shoot but never gets a hit. Also, the others ships Phalanx doesn’t seems to work…
Is this right or am i missing something?
Thanks in advance!

I think that Maritime Strike operations in BMS are under/mis-modeled in BMS in general…but that’s to be expected for an F-16 based project - such operations aren’t really in that Platform Mission set.

@VDK Which scenario in which teater?

@VDK unfortunately it is undermodeled in BMS, In my recent campaign our flight launched eight harpoons at the chinese carrier group. Only one counter-missile fired by carrier group and phlanxes were completely ineffective. 7 hits out of 8…
Edit: Looking at files, all of those CVNs have AGMInterceptionPK value set at 90. They should take care of most AShMs unless i’am missing something…

@fegeleinn - actually, what is under-modeled is how many inbound aircraft will actually get through to take a shot in the first place…and that the most appropriate munitions are not even in the Viper inventory. And the HARPOON model could be wonky, or how people are trying to using it - guesses at tactics could be off.
Taking out a ship of size is a very hard problem to solve…I don’t even bother to try it in BMS.

actually that’s somehow modeled. if the carrier group has active airwings it will immediately use those to intercept your flight. the issue is they tend to use every single aircraft at their disposal for normal missions and not leave some aircraft for fleet defense. This creates a huge vulnerability in late-campaing where they often sail aimlessly without any air cover.
As for the SAM systems in ships, majority of AShMs can outrangr them by a small margin so they are no help either…

@fegeleinn - so, in RL warfare at sea defending aircraft generally play a very small role, if any. Any SAM system that you may encounter over land also has a shipborne version (on ships of size) - and that is what is going to take you out first. The RL problem is getting inside of those - and getting enough missiles inside of those - to be effective. Fighter should be the last thing you encounter, IF you actually live to get close enough - fuel burn and requirement for re-fuel over water holds them to last-tasked due to range/endurance/time on station limitations.
From what I read of people doing Maritime Attack in BMS the scenarios are grossly non-realistic…too many people actually survive, and I’m guessing this is “game-ism” over “realisimo”. Some of the SAM systems in BMS are under modeled, too. That could be corrected with some attention to Janes pubs…the expensive hardboard Annuals, not the paper periodical ones.

@Killroy - far more of these guys should have outright died…especially the older jets.

That is a 2D modeling value I guess…
