HUD Unreadable
-
I have an ASUS 248 QE monitor which has very crisp and bright pictures. The problem I am running into is that the horizon during the daytime is so bright I can’t see my HUD at all and I need to turn on my HMCS to get basic info. I can fix this by putting my monitor’s colors in the “Standard” setting which makes everything look dull and greyed out… not how I would like to enjoy the new graphics of 4.33! Even when I do that it is still very difficult to read. I have my HUD as bright as I can and I don’t believe the backplate knob is functioning in the F18 to turn it darker.

I had the same problem … just reduce a little bit your screen (monitor) contrast setting. (on my side, Brightness at 100% Contrast at 80% is good)

F/A-18?
This has been noted by several people I’ve flown the F/A-18 with. Many/most have changed the HUD color to something legible.
The conundrum is that with the F-16 the HUD is readable (except in extreme cases) in the standard green, but the same monitor settings on the F/A-18 washout the HUD in ‘normal’ circumstances, not just extreme cases.
Should not need to change monitor color settings for each different AC, I think.

Thanks for the replies! I will try changing the HUD color, even though I like the green
Appreciate it!
Update for anyone else with this issue: Yellow seems to be the most readable color on the F/A-18. White is a close second.
-
I have the same issue as well. I noticed it on both the F/A-18C and A-10A.
-
for me, the f-16 hud is totally unreadable when overlapping with the whitish part just over the horizon during daytime (0900). Last flight i took off at 0700 and on departure i couldnt see anything on the HUD. is that fixed with the contrast/brightness that DJ mentioned?

Try using a different hud color (Alt-h cycles through the available ones). I’ve found that yellow works best for me at night / dawn / dusk while I prefer light blue during daytime.
Not realistic I know, but as we have that function available we might as well make use of it.

Just like the monitor’s contrast setting, and guess hat, it is more “realistic” in fine.

Dee-Jay, despite our different points of view on HUD color options, I took your advice and worked hard to find ‘good’ settings for the F-16 HUD in the proper green color. It made a big difference. There are some cases where it is washed out, but those are expected (and would occur with any color).
However, that is NOT the case with the F/A-18 (as far I am seeing):

I know that in real airplanes the crew usually ends up cranking up all the displays to full bright…have you looked at/changed the settings on the HUD thumb wheels at all?

Day …. Full bright on the wheel.

do u have cockpit glass when u fly F-18?

Yes, as far as I know.
I think we had one instance where one AC in the flight was missing the canopy.

i m using nvidia GTX460, is it where the bug come from? No, I mean in our squadron, I think it might have happened one time, on one aircraft in a multiplayer flight.
