Alaska Theater
-
Trying to be as delicate as I can put it, but I’ve certainly noticed those who don’t finish a theater, typically are the ones who come in later saying it’s impossible, or shouldn’t be done (Nevada being a great example).
Please show me where I have said either - not once have I said it is impossible or shouldn’t be done. Don’t put words in my mouth, especially if you then go on to…
Malc so far you have spent your time in this thread giving nothing constructive as of yet, then finally you now bring forth you have done some of the work in the past? Is it possible that maybe this is just personal for you, since you have apparently abandoned the project? Would you be willing to share what you have done with others so maybe they could pick up where you left off?
… ask me to share what I’ve done to date (which is very little, to be fair). Of course I’ll share it, if it is wanted and will be put to good use.
I also believe that things should be created, especially in flight sims for the sake of having it.
Are you prepared to offer any and all skills you can to see the task through? I believe people follow leaders - I have two times in the past tried to be one of the leaders (Panama and Kuwait) - only to have far too many promises of help fall by the wayside. Some (Chuckles to name but one) picked up the bat on Panama and carried it forward, but not until long after many promises of help were pissed on. Polak has kept his word and assisted greatly with Kuwait, but again, all the help that was promised never came through. Is it any f***ing wonder I am skeptical?
Generally people respond to positive input and feedback from others, I believe in anyone who can do this project and that they will see it through. I don’t think it has to have all the bells and whistles to be considered a theater, not everything is combat, why do some have a hard time simply enjoying the most important part: the flying.
Show real leadership - a genuine desire to see this through to the end, and I’ll gladly help in any way I can. Simply post your desire to see someone else contribute (as in your opening post on this thread) countless hours of hard work to satisfy your whim, you can forget it.
I don’t think you truly appreciate just how much work goes into creating a full working theater, even if you forsake the campaign element of it.

so …
- the only guy who came up here with a draft of something
- the first guy who actually provide content versus brassing air
- the first guy who is willing to offer his previous work
is accused of being a nay sayer?
Cut the crap gents !!!
He’s got experience you do not have.but I’ve certainly noticed those who don’t finish a theater, typically are the ones who come in later saying it’s impossible, or shouldn’t be done (Nevada being a great example).
you’re not part of this community for long enough to state such a thing imho
Would you be willing to share what you have done with others so maybe they could pick up where you left off?
So we’re all talks about doing great things but you aren’t even willing to start from scratch and rather would use what’s been already done? That tells me a lot about how the project will look like in 12 months.

agreed (and i know what i talk about too being active with many different terrain for more than 15 years)

I have to ask… what’s the point?
For a theater to be viable (IMO) it needs to be able to support a campaign. For a campaign to work properly, you need plenty objectives to link together to aid good GU movement. For plenty objectives, you need a good road network too. Alaska is the last place on earth you’d go looking for a good road network.
Your very first reply, I’d rather you stay out of the thread if you have nothing constructive to add. Your entire contribution to this thread has been basically this. If you really want to be a part of building this, then don’t nit pick the idea which isn’t even a real thing yet and then allude 4 pages in that you have done previous work. The only person who has shown willingness to even look at the project has been Cloud 9 who is actively sourcing data sets for it as we speak.
Posting a .png after the fact and the declaring from the high heavens it is for not is meaningless. And asking for it isn’t trying to avoid starting from scratch. It doesn’t matter either way, if you’re unwilling and are just posting it to brag then again it’s without meaning other than to stroke your ego. You are more or less proving my point.
@ Red Dog I really don’t care what you have to say, you lost credibility with me on the last go around. Just leave me be. Thanks.
Can we get the thread back on topic, please. Focus on those who see this as something as viable. If you read my posts it is merely an idea; not a request for someone else to work for me “at my whim.” This is starting to look like some are using this as fodder to attack an ideal and I’d appreciate if we could get back on track.

I asked what’s the point - I didn’t say it couldn’t be done or indeed it shouldn’t be done. Facts eh? They can be a right bitch sometimes…
Good luck in your endeavours.

You seem to have low situational awareness, what you say constantly is in contradiction.
Do I want to pursue it? Difficult… as I mentioned earlier, I cannot see much point in creating yet another theater which will no doubt fall like many before it, and especially as it is wholly unsuitable for anything other than training.
If this isn’t naysaying or negative thinking, I don’t know what is. I’d hate to see you start a business, probably wouldn’t get very far at all. Again I reiterate, let us get back on track.

Don’t ever presume to know me. You know absolutely nothing about me.

Please respect the rules, especially the first one, and it seems the seventh
Whether you care or not the fact remains that Red Dog does have some experience and a fair amount of credibility in this community. And he continues to give a lot back to that community.
This is a public forum so expect opinions to differ from yours from time to time. If you can’t deal with that you can always start your own, where you can be Top Dog. Oh, wait…
Back on topic though… Alaska scenery with a DirectX 11 graphics engine and terrain engine… Red Flag - Alaska… now that’s something to dream about for the future for sure.

@Cloud:
Unfortunately with the SRTM data I have, none of those are within it!!
If someone else has the available SRTM data for that area, I’m up for it.
I have already generated the theater for the SRTM data I previously posted though!
Cheers,
C9
Out of curiosity, which airports ARE in the coverage area you have?

Uhhmm, not exactly!?
Out of curiosity, which airports ARE in the coverage area you have?
There’s several, I haven’t wrote them down, but they aren’t the major Air Force Bases.
BUT, stay patient and stay tuned, I will have an update later!!!

Agree in full.
And if I have caught the sense correctly, Darkman, not to dream only about, if for this. With best regards,

UPDATE
Malc generously allowed me to continue with his generated Alaska theater and move on with it. It’s in a very infant stage and he posted one shot of it but here’s a couple other pics.
And the SRTM shot in TerrainView showing the airport/airbase names:
Some are hard to see so here’s the list:
ANCHORAGE INTERNATIONAL
BETHEL
BIRCHWOOD
DILLINGHAM
EIELSON AFB
ELMENDORF AFB
FAIRBANKS INTERNATIONAL
GALENA
HOMER
HOOPER BAY
KENAI MUNICIPAL
KING SALMON
MC GRATH
MERRILL FIELD
NENANA MUNI
NOME
PALMER MUNICIPAL
PORT CLARENCE CGS
RALPH WIEN MEMORIAL
SEWARD
SHISHMAREF NEW
SOLDOTNA
TALKEETNA
WAINWRIGHT AAFIt’s up and running in BMS, of course Tactical Engagement only. But there’s a lot of work to be done.
I want to Thank Malc for allowing the use of his original work and the data he supplied. He even sent additional data(SRTM/E00) that could potentially lead to an additional version which includes Russia(for now, just sticking with 64Segment as it’s the safest). Story/project for another Millennium!!
As soon as I get artwork done for the 2D map I will post pics of that and of the rough terrain. Have already did some quick cleanup tiling in bulk but there’s still lots of that work and artwork to be done.
I have commitments later today and tomorrow(moving), to a near by town, which won’t take but a day as everything is already set, just have to get my rig over there and I’ll be back to work by tomorrow evening to get some stuff done and a few pics posted.
Now, EVERYONE THANK MALC for his generosity to the community!!!
Cheers,
C9

MALC, given the poo poo back and forth, allow me to be the first to say, THANK YOU!
I think you’ll see it will be a lot of fun and once we have it, it will be another area in the world where we can play fighter pilots.
This looks very great, ferry flights and Red Flag, here we come!!!
Now it’s very clear you have a side to choose, shall you be RED or BLUE

Well that was unexpected. Wicked! Without going the fully custom airbase route (unless, of course, that’s what you’re planning) would we be able to use the Fukuoka Airbase “model” for Elmendorf and the Osan Airbase “model” for Eielson? They both seem to be the closest to reality in terms of runway layout.

I have Wonson for Elmendorf at the moment. Have to do some comparisons.
Custom airbases is part of the plan but down the line.
Also Rybo, sorry I didn’t respond to your PM, I accidentally deleted the soms a beach!! DOH

It’s already looking pretty great man. Eielson looks like a great base and is very similar to Osan in a lot of respects, but you are right, it is on a completely different heading, ect. which seems like a PITA.

I PM’d you? :-?

@Cloud:
It would have to be rotated, which is a pretty big job in itself. All the PD/PHD and features have to be rotated!!
But it’s doable, and it is pretty similar.
Ahh, I didn’t know that rotation was that involved. Bummer.

LOL, I just looked at that again and yes, Fukuoka Airbase is 505 Wonsan, which as I said, that’s what I’m using for Elmendorf.
I couldn’t remember off the top of my head which model was being use for Fukuoka because that airbase name has been changed over time in Falcon!!
