I ordered the virpil warbird base last year for use with my Cougar joystick. I wound up putting in the included heavy springs and detent less cams. Personal preference really but the default springs felt pretty light. I recently found a virpil constellation grip used in good shape and it is matched perfectly to the warbird base as far as feel goes since obviously they are designed for each other. But the cougar F-16 joystick also worked extremely well despite it being heavier than the constellation grip. You will have to install and setup the virpil software to get the warbird up and running either way. Not a huge ordeal, just take your time.

RE: Game crash to DESKTOP but no log/dump files created (4.35)
That was probably the dreaded ‘gndai’ bug that caused ctd in 4.35 for me in the Isreali theater, at least according to my crash logs.
I idled 4.35 and went back to 4.34.4 and restarted the Israel and its stable. Really nice of the developers to release 4.35 when they did as it is definitely better, particularly the dx11 support, but I don’t think it was quite ready for prime time.

RE: Madcatz F.L.Y. 5 mapping - profile
I made a key file for my Saitek FLY5 complete with shifted dx functions a while back.
Nothing to be embarrassed about. It ain’t no full hotas substitute but for a road warrior the Mad Catz is hard to beat as it packs up extremely well.
Doesn’t look like I can attach it here. Send me a pm and I will send it to you.

RE: No awacs or IFF ?
After some trial and error I found the solution for the IFF interrogation deal. Under the data/sim/Ac data folder are the *.dat files for each aircraft. In my case I changed the F16cbk40il.dat file under the “IFF” header as follows:
avionicsIFFTransponderSettings 23
avionicsIFFInterrogatorSettings 0
avionicsIFFBackupM1M3 0to:
avionicsIFFTransponderSettings 63
avionicsIFFInterrogatorSettings 15
avionicsIFFBackupM1M3 1The preceding is what is listed under the US F16cbk40.dat file “IFF” header.
Thanks for the Jstars tip. I was able to frag E8 missions normally without the wp error. It certainly helps with ground unit SA.
Anyone find it curious the Israeli’s have no air defenses? Like none. UN ban?

RE: No awacs or IFF ?
Figured out how to add awacs to these Israeli campaigns by adding a solo E2 training flight then adding another E2 to the package out over the Med. Thus far with no havcap escorts and the red side has not targeted them. At least so far in my Serpent’s Sting campaign.
But I cannot get the IFF interrogation to work on any of the IDF F-16s up to block 40. I used mission commander to temporarily switch my Ramon based F-16 squadron to US F-16-40CMs and the IFF (TMS left) worked without issue. StevieG says above not all are equipped with interrogators, is there any way to change this? I could not figure it out in the editor and changing settings in the avionics configurator has no affect. My search efforts have not been fruitful.
Also the E8 Jstars are not fragged by the AI for the blue side but are available out of Ben Gurion. Are they necessary to win?

RE: Bridges
Following up on my own thread. I was targeting a red mech battalion that was on both sides of a bridge that crossed a small river or wash. I happened to take out the bridge as collateral damage while targeting the enemy vehicles. I observed the rest of the battalion for a while and they were crossing back and forth across the chasm after the bridge was destroyed on both sides without restrictions. So the take away is targeting of bridges has no stategic value in this theater.
Also on day seven of the campaign as blue troops were closing in on the final objectives the campaign ended with a crash at 2000:01. No stalemate or victory, just a crash. Jet froze, could here sound but keyboard was unresponsive. Loaded with an earlier save from a few hours earlier and ran in 2D and it crashed at the exact same time. Again no logbook info update.

Bridges
Now on day 6 of my first campaign on Balance of Power blue side. Campaign appears to be progressing well as and blue has taken several of the objectives sites on the western side of the map. Sarajevo, Tuzla and Banja Luca are still under red control, for now. Is their any point in destroying the bridges east of these areas to prevent reinforcements? I am not seeing any real movement east to west, rather seems to be going in the opposite direction, like red is retreating east.
I am controlling my own F-18 squadron and letting the AI frag the rest. Thus far, no bridges have been taken out. The motorized battalions seem to be able to traverse pretty much any type of terrain including the steep mountains, but not sure about rivers. This question would apply to other theaters as well, Kuwait for example.
Really well done theater, lots of attention to detail.

RE: Kuwait Theater tester version 2 (434U1)
First of all this is a great theater, brings back lots of memories as I am very familiar with this part of the middle east. Iraqis put up a spirited fight if you are the coalition side.
One question: Any way to import a more detailed map for playback in Tacview? The “default” one I was able to load lacks detail.
Not trying to be a buzz kill but is there a reason why enemy ground vehicles barely show up in WPN page when using Maverick D’s?? Is anyone else having or had this issue? How to fix?
I am seeing the same thing but in all AG modes using the TGP. Though if I zoom in and out it will disappear, then reappear depending on zoom level. Usually the TGP will stay locked on but not always.

RE: New owner Cougar Hotas mod questions
Thank you, Malc. Did as you suggested and from there it was pretty straightforward. Only thing I would add is to push in on the black housing “tabs” with a flathead screwdriver or skinny pliers then you can remove the bracket. I have included a couple of pictures. Hope this helps someone else as I couldn’t find any sources online.

New owner Cougar Hotas mod questions
I recently acquired a Cougar hotas via ebay and am now a first time owner. The stock gimbal y axis was broken (seller gave partial refund) but I was able to “temp” fix the gimbal with JB weld. The joystick has surprisingly held up for the last couple of weeks as I am progress on my initial BMS Korea campaign to learn the sim. I have looked at the replacement gimbal offerings from Shapeways, also described as “Uber nxt clone”, but cannot find any feedback other than “lighter than original”. Just wondering if anyone here has used this 3d printed mod for any amount of time. I realize many suggest the FSSB mods but I will plan that for a 2nd joystick to be used exclusively for force appropriate aircraft, ala F-16. So, I would like to keep the current Cougar joystick usable for IL2 and DCS P-51, etc. Besides, I just found after some trial and error, I can A/R with the JB welded stock gimbals, at least in straight and level. Pretty happy about that, actually. I should add that the joystick pots look smooth in Foxy as well, no spiking.
Luckily the stock throttle was in good shape and works really well and I have no complaints about that. But I would like to realign the speed brake switch as suggested in Cougar world website but I am hesitant to twist it with the pliers, and I can’t figure out how to remove the grey or white switch to pull the base module out to counter rotate the assembly in line with switch. It is not explained adequately on the Cougar world website and I don’t want to break my functioning speed brake switch! If it ain’t broke…
I have included a picture of my throttle when I took it apart, you can see the speed brake switch assembly on the right but it appears to be firmly mounted in its original position. Also, do these throttle pots look like originals?
