Turns out you don’t need to render via the x264 codec. H264 can be read by BMS.
That makes perfect sense.
Wondering if there is some confusion here between those two?
For clarification:
H.264 is the standard that defines how video streams should be encoded. As part of this encoding, it defines among other things, how the video should be compressed, how color planes should be represented etc. A video stream correctly encoded in the H.264 format should be playable by all players that support the H.264 format.
x264 is an encoder that produces H.264 compatible video-stream. x264 is a very high quality encoder and produces remarkable quality in bitstreams. It is almost exclusively used by all the open source video platforms out there (such as ffmpeg, gstreamer, handbrake etc.)
I meant encoder rather than codec. BMS implements x264 while you can use standard h264 video format when rendering out from Vegas / Premiere.

No need to pay even today it’s still possibile to upgrade a Win7 to Win 10 official and legally through the Windows Upgrade assitant for free
That’s assuming the hardware is capable of running Windows 10 without issue. Some legacy peripherals or hardware do not have the proper driver model to be supported by Windows 10. It could be a pandoras box without all the information.

@khronik The issue is that it’s not just a single xml file, it’s one for every theater you installed or plan to install (if it hasn’t been updated yet).
FYI, it’s also not reverse engineering, I simply shared the source code that I compiled the auto-patcher from. If you can’t execute the .exe, installing the python interpreter and executing the source code will likely still take less time and annoying repetitive labor than manually editing everything. My post was referencing the time it takes to upgrade to Windows 10 vs. making the edits to the xml file manually. If someone wants to install python and then figure out how to execute your source code, then it’s up to them. I’d argue, if they need a script to edit a few xml files, then installing and executing python script would also pose a challenge.
Just not sure why everyone is so bent up about editing a text file manually. Maybe I’m too old school? LOL
Sometimes it’s good to know what and how you are editing something, especially when it’s a trivial edit.

@khronik I don’t have the exact parameters but from memory MP3 licensing prevented the codec’s inclusion into software - might be why Vegas/Premiere don’t have it included.
When I (rarerly) need to convert between formats I use https://ffmpeg.org/ - you should be able to convert your AVI with a CLI command with the right parameters.
Alternatively if you can’t be bothered with CLI, https://handbrake.fr/ is another good option. It includes the MP3 encoder.
LAME MP3 codec exists and installs to Vegas but errors out due to some incompatibility or issue with the inf / registry so was close but no cigar on that front. I’ll mess with FFMPEG some more, and will take a look at handbrake.
EDIT : Got it working!

@orffen Or just edit the 3 lines in the file manually via notepad instead of spending 25x the time trying to reverse engineer the auto patcher.
or take 25x less and just upgrade to a non-deprecated operating system
In some instances it can be quite difficult and time consuming to simply “update” due to existing installed programs and/or large data to migrate. System compatibility can also be an issue if using older hardware.
I’d be weary to suggest someone nuke their entire OS and pay for a new Win10 key when the task at hand is a text file edit consisting of 3 lines but to each their own method.

Falcon Campaign Video Format
I’ve had mixed success attempting to create new campaign videos for BMS.
All the professional software I’ve tested ith (Vegas / Premiere) can render out to x264 but will not allow MP3 as an audio codec. Because of this, I’ve tried rendering the audio as PCM uncompressed then using FFMPEG to convert the audio stream as MP3 while keeping the video stream intact (copy method).
It works but the audio starts to drop in and out after a few seconds of playback. I’m suspecting some type of keyframe or audio interleave de-sync.
TLDR:
Does anyone have a proper method (GUI or cmd line program - ie Virtuadub or other) to encode videos for BMS or possibly specifics about codecs and/or their specific required parameters? -

RE: Is there a map view while in the sim?
At Falcon Online we’ve experienced players simply saving their game and viewing both forces easily with mission commander.
Players do this to get a complete picture of the opposing force, and it completely scraps realism and the fog of war.

RE: Scoping for Interested Parties
@TGW:
Not really, if you’re using Proxmox VE (Debian 9 fork). I ran several DCS servers in this enviroment and was quite easy to administrate, actually . . . .
BMS requires the server to be in the 3D world, and DCS isn’t exactly a proof of concept for hosting BMS. YMMV

Running in a VM’d environment w/ Linux will be your first challenge.

RE: BMS 4.34 crash on joining online campaign
We have only had 1 or 2 users over the last few days that has experienced the crash on receiving units using the exact same build/version that was exhibiting the crash on receiving units earlier in the event progression. For the 1 or 2 users who reported the issue since this weekend, attempting another time corrected the issue for them.
The server has also been running for over 24hrs without a crash (1-2 reboots within 48-60hrs), with more than 30+ users flying on the server going in and out.
If this is in-fact a database problem, it sure seems very selective. I’m not sure if BMS sends all units on a client connection, but if this was in-fact db error or corruption then I would have assumed for it to be more widespread.
One factor that has changed is the number of players that were initially connected or trying to connect just after the start of the event (more than 30+ users connecting at once). Now it’s maybe 6-8 at once I assume.
I’m still at a loss of how a corrupted unit can allow some to connect without issue (at least on the first attempt) and then manifest itself persistently for others.
Possibly it has been destroyed or isn’t being sent due to the campaign progression?
@Bad:
I’ve checked your last 2.3.3 installer (the one that Khronik was pointing to me) and the MB339 database issue are still there. Do you have a most recent version ?
UCD 402 ("MB339") - Error -> Squadron and corresponding flight are using different specific types UCD 402 ("MB339") FLT - Info -> Flight is not linked to a squadron
The BFS 2.3.3 link is the same build that the crash logs were sourced from. Your suggestion concerning the MB339 came after your request for the theater link, and 2.3.3 is what is currently active on the server since the beginning of the event.

RE: BMS 4.34 crash on joining online campaign
It’s not stock kto but rather Battle for Sinai which we currently have an event running.
Campaign Installer link sent via pm.
Thanks for looking at this.
Edit: I found another report of this issue, albeit on Battle for Balkans with the same crash log.
http://falcon-online.org/forum/index.php?topic=2903.msg32095#msg32095
User claims changing his bw settings allowed him to get all the way through to the campaign 2D without crash on receiving units. This could be a false positive repro, and more to do with chance but it is of interest.
Ironically I did get all the way through to the campaign 2D after crashing out several times on receiving units by also lowering my bw settings, but wasn’t able to on the next repro attempt (same ctd on recv units).
Could this be remotely related to some clients having bandwidth settings set to as high as 300000 for up/down? Latest instructions state to set to 80% of available BW but some clients are on fiber and have very high values set. Only the bms devs could confirm but due to the randomness of the issue but the fact that 14 players can be on the server having completely normal flights while others are crashing on receiving units would suggest it’s not specifically unit corruption, at least not from the actual data in the campaign but the server’s session itself? Maybe when specific players with very high settings (or very low) are connected to the server this occurs? This is all speculation of course as I don’t have any insight to how the network code handles these variables.

RE: BMS 4.34 crash on joining online campaign
We have been experiencing the exact same issue with the exact same crashlog (gndmain.cpp) over at Falcon Online to no avail while running battle for sinai campaign.
At first we believed it to be network or campaign data related but with this other report I’m not sure any more.
The odd part is if you take down the server and reload the current autosave there’s no issue until it reappears after several client reconnection attempts.
Sometimes it works fine for hours but sometimes it will occur after a much shorter period of time since the server has been brought back online.
When it happened on my end I managed to get back in after possibly 10-20 attempts over half an hour. I did manage to get back into the campaign 2d, but as soon as I left the session I would again receive the crash on receiving units. Hope it helps.

RE: Falcon Online
Agree with Malc. The music is not required. Only watched the first 10-15 seconds before shutting it off. Too bad, may have been a good video.
Maybe you’re not aware… They have added this new technology to media players on the web, it’s called volume control.
When you use it, it can adjust the level of the audio playing.
For advanced users there’s another function called mute. This completely removes the audio playback.
Id suggest you try the first option, and once you get some experieince with it you can move onto the mute function.
If you have any trouble using these, feel free to give me a shout. (but not shout like yelling, more of a soft poke)

RE: Battle For Sinai 2.3.3 Force On Force Event
They are different? They are installed separately? BFS campaign developers are not the same guys who developed ITO? That’s what I meant.
The guy asked if the fact that a BFS event starting soon means ITO is being converted and the answer is absolutely no because of the reasons I wrote.BFS is a fork of ITO which happened years ago (Circa 2014). It’s focus is MP / Force on Force, and the campaign was designed by Mystic Magic (among other FO members).
Danguard has recently ported it (and made other design changes) to 4.3.4 standards (DB etc), and the UI was lightly massaged from the 4.3.4 default to ensure maximum compatibility.
Obviously the original ITO developers have due credit with BFS as it was the baseline which was used, although to my understanding they have not yet ported it to 4.3.4 going by the forum thread here.
They are two completely different installs which are not compatible between each other.

RE: I5 or i7?
I would kind of like to see your Cinebench scores… Everything I have seen puts the 3600x within 5% of the 3600 at 25% more cost. And the 3600 is roughly on par with Intel’s 8700, or the I5-9600 in single-core performance. Nowhere even remotely close to the I9 series (Except maybe the 39xx series). The only Ryzen I have seen that outperforms the I9’s in a comparable chip competition is the R9 3900x. Which costs more than the 9900k - there goes the “Intel is overpriced” argument.
If you plan to use it for anything other than gaming, the i7 will likely be of benefit. Otherwise, the i5 is the much better deal.
100% Agree. The only AMD chip that’s remotely interesting to me is the 3600 (non x) due to it’s price / perf.
