Targeting pod without LGB
-
Hi,
Is possible to load targeting pod without carry a laser guided bomb?Bye
Stilgar -
Yes, just click the checkbox on the loadout before commiting.

In the loadout page? i have no checkbox for targeting pod, it add automaticaly with lgb
maybe a wrong installation?

Yep, you should have two radio buttons / check boxes on the top of the loadlist labelled “Load TGP” and “Load HTS” (this is from memory).

Recommend carrying the Targeting Pod whether you carry LGBs or not.

You are talking about the F-16, correct ?

What theater are you flying in?

The option should be there for any theater, I think. TGP can be used to assign coordinates and mark points. With that capability in BMS you should be able to drop cluster bombs with a great accuracy by using the Pod to view a target then choose it as a mark point using the TGP. You then fly to that mark point and drop the CBU in CCRP mode, the effect is quite impressive.
-
it’s probably not realistic but honestly the TGP is helpful for any mission, and since it doesn’t seem to have a noticeable effect on aircraft performance you should have it on most flights i find.

You can bomb directly onto a TGP assignment. If you hard lock in point mode, the TGP is SOI and the CCRP steering will guide you to the target. No need to do what you suggest. Although making markpoints is a good idea.

I thought that is true only for LGBs and not CBUs?
-
If the TGP is SOI (you dont need to do any kind of locking), slewing the TGP also slews the CCRP solution. You can use the TGP to drop CBUs quite accurately too.
I tend to bring a TGP for most AG missions, because the limitations that apply to it dont exist in BMS, so there is no down side to bringing one.
-
I use the TGP also in A-A. It helps to identify the target and gives you direct information on how it behaves. You can fix the target in point mode and could look for others if you switch to FCR again as SOI.

Its good for AA in clear weather, but dead weight otherwise I find. Its also got a 7G limit. I would probably run out of pods due to often over Ging / speeding them.

To clarify for the new guys - this is an IRL limit rather than a BMS (maybe will change in the future?).

AFAIK it is, but it’s a manual limit so not aware anything would need to change e.g most of the AG loadouts are 5.5G but you can still pull 9Gs if you want to. Have seen comments on F-16 regarding sniper pods coming back after being over G’d in training.

Most BMS loadout G and speed limits are enforced by (unrealistic) failures and damage.
Im aware that loadout G and speed limits are pilot observed and that the stores config switch does not offer protection from structural damage. I’ve even made that case on these fora before.
5.5G is not very specific though! Most loadouts with wing tanks are limited to 5.5G symmetrical until the tanks are empty, after which they can do 6.5G. They can only do 4.4 asymmetrical until the tanks are dry. Speed limit of 600KIAS or M1.6 was it? Now I want to go look it up again… then you have different limits again for employment, for emergency jettison and for selective jettison. Then you have the RTLs for when you offload some of the stores - limits change after your config does! Lots of extra stuff to remember…
Now Ill have to look it up but I seem to recall there being a dry wing tank config that allowed 9G - might have been just wingtip sidewinders and tanks? It was CAT I but I cant recall the carriage limits otoh.
-
If they can make the pod disintegrate and fall off when I pull 9G that would be most useful
I have an entire manual of stores limitations for the CM and many combinations - lets not even go there.

As Blu3wolf said, the TGP becomes SOI and yes you can slew it too. I always take one up for this reason. Its a very handy tool to have. The difference between LGBs and CBUs is only that the laser needs to be emitting for LGBs, other than that, the exact same thing is going on with the TGP. In both cases, the TGP controls the bomb fall line and steering cues.
-
Well no. The LGB obviously will correct if the laser is emitting. You can release with it disarmed though.
