New X55 owner, some issues and questions…
-
I strongly recommend the x-65 over x-55, for a number of reasons. To quote a post elsewhere…
Let me share some contrasts with you.I no particular order…
throttle on -65 much smoother(the 55 seems to have a friction issue, although I have read lube helps that). More to the point, the -55 does not have either idle detent or 'burner detents.-65 has both.
As mentioned, -65 is force sensing. Also, switch action is noticably “crisper”. That may be because, as mentioned elsewhere, the -65 is metal.
Hat 3 (as in CMDS) is a 4 way, where on the -55 it’s a button.
Speaking of buttons,on the throttle, there are 4 way switches under the fore and bird fingers. The -55 has two buttons. The 4 ways come in handy, as neither stick makes use of shift functions. BTW, I never had a -52, but both the -55 and -65 have different selectable modes. There are 4 modes on the -65, 3 on the -55. I made use of that with the -55. I made Mode 2 my “landing/take off mode”, with switches for landing gear, etc.
The -55 has a dual usp hookup system( each plugs independantly into pc). That was a bit of a PITA for 2 reasons. It took awhile to get the throttle 2 work in the game (I was flying F4AF at the time), not to mention I had to rearrange my peripherals to free up a port
One cool thing about the -55 is that the throttle base has a total of 14 switch positions per Mode. The -65 has 5. In fact, long term, whether I go with the Cougar I’m trying to get running ,or the -65,I will be using the -55 throttle as a switch panel. (BTW, I ‘banded’ the throttle, instant landing gear handle)
So, all in all, I am trying to get my Cougar to work, purely because I want my 'pit as close to RL as possible. If I can’t, I will be using the- 65, hands down.Too hard to find in good condition…

Dawgboy, did you take the throttle apart for the AB duct tape mod?

Negative…just put the tape on one side of the glossy part of the slide mechanism. Then I adjusted the burner kick-in in the Controller Setup menu. Tweezers recommended to keep your finger’s oil off of the tape surface before it goes onto the slide.

You might be right, at least if Ebay is any indication. I know I’m straying a bit off target, but I noticed a couple of x-45. I used to really like that stickI wonder how that would work with BMS/are there modern drives/etc.

Ok - just got the x55 and trying to set up BMS in game rather than use the software.
All button pushes work great but I have no idea how to set any of the rotaries or mouse nipple from within BMS?
The sliver rotary (far left of throttle mapped easily enough as zoom in and out) but cant figure out how to set the actual rotaries, mouse nipple or right hand throttle slidder at all?
Any tips please how to set these in game?
Regards,
Gary

Hi, Gary, and welcome to FO!
Go into Setup, and the first step is to make sure your stick is the one listed.
Then, go into Advanced Setup-You’ll find various sections in there. You find the particular function you want to map( throttle, brakes, etc.) select it and then move the control you want on the stick/throttle and you’ll see it move.
Repeat that for the other functions.
Couple of tips…when you do the brakes, click the reverse tab. Otherwise your brakes will be locked on the Ramp.
if memory serves- the “range” tab is a bit misleading. That is actually the RDR gain. -
@Gary - I read somewhere recently that most people are programming the mouse nipple using the Saitek software. If I can find it again, I will post a link.
Edit: Below is the link.

Firstly thank for all the replies. In hindsight I cant believe I made such a meal out of assigning the rotaries!!
Pretty straightforward when you know what axis or rotation button is which!
I’d like to get both the nipple and adjacent slider working too if possible so will look into that.
Nipple for cursor control and slider for my air brakes…
Thanks again all.
Best wishes…

I mapped my pinky slider on the rear of the throttle to open and down to close air brakes. The front slider on the throttle I used as a fast switch to dogfight mode but for DF slider I did use the software….

Here’s one way to have the nipple control the radar cursor. In HUD software:
Set up each x/y axis to three bands. Assign the two bands at either end of the axis to around 20% (although YMMV, can set the band % to whatever you like, but leave the middle band as large as possible to avoid controls leaking into each other. No commands will be added to the middle bands). Each of these 20% bands contain the keyboard control for cursor up/down/left/right depending on which axis you’re setting up and which band you’re editing. See screenshot below:
Each of those 20% bands are set up with advanced commands like so:
The slider set up is alot easier, but unfortunately isn’t actually an axis itself. It’s just another button. Forward is button down, backward is button up.
So I just use the keyboard command to toggle AFBrakes as an advanced command, so it presses the key once when set forward, and presses the key once again when it is backward:
