X0/x2 GE/PW Vipers

Just curious, between the PW and GE equipped variants, which is your favourite. I don’t know enough about the finer details, but I prefer the GE x0s simply because the look cooler

Block 52 is the only way to fly IMHO. However this is more to what I have read about the Block 50 in RL rather than any BMS specific reason.

Got any examples? I’ve always just preferred the look of the GE over the PW engine, but I’m not well informed on performance or reliability differences. I believe the early PW was prone to compressor stalls etc.

At this point, IRC they’re more or less equal at this point in the development cycle with a lot of the old issues ironed out for both motors, but GE imho is just a little bit better… Plus as Planehazza mentioned it just looks better on the airplane, which that’s half of fighter piloting right there, looking cool!

My favorite mark to fly is the Block 30 (GE). The real thoroughbred

This. And the real world pilots absolutely love them. At least the 120th FS guys do.

Maybe this is why….
Rock solid tracking kill in that S.O.B. with the right aspect and 70-120 knots closure
That’s the Block 30 for ya… beast mode!

I have spoken to P&W maintainers some years ago and from my mind they talked about the an up to 20% higher fuel burn for the GE engine compared to a P&W 220 engine. GE also runs a bit hotter and has more thrust. Hotter also means more quickly wear and tear. P&W usage costs less money for fuel and maintenance… That’s one of the few reasons why the P&W was chosen over the GE by some countries. But don’t pin me on that…

What Jan said is in line with what I’ve heard as well. Ground crews prefer PW motors, pilots prefer GE motors for the thrust.

I can see why the 30 is loved by the pilots. Good strong engine with a light frame (compared to heavy geared 40/50/52). A real hot rod! Same story for the F-16A(M) block 10 (lighter) compared to the block 15’s. It went almost as far as fights between pilots about who was to fly the block 10’s that day!
