Alaska Theater

Hhmmm…
oh, come on! Yes. +100. Agree in full, flying a well conceived TE with real people in MP is a true experience and, in short, just why we are flying for.
Just my two cents, of course, but at the same time my meaning for the ‘real fun’ term after so many years of wondering around high. With best regards,

+1. Far too many folk take off and start blasting away without really learning to fly the airplane or use it’s systems.
What? You can’t learn to fly and properly use the systems in Korea or another of the near fully developed theaters? Far too many have (mine included) been started out as great ideas, only to fail through a general malaise from the community - creating a theater takes a huge effort, I don’t think enough people appreciate just how much, and not nearly enough are prepared to get their hands dirty to see the process through.
Take a look at this forum alone - 14 sub-forums for different projects. How many would you say are close to being finished? 1 or 2 maybe? What we really need is a concerted effort to make what’s available much better, maybe even complete. After this is done we could look to create new terrains as yet untouched.
If all you’re after is eye-candy then all power to you, but I personally want more than just flying around looking at the pretty (and I use that word loosely) scenery.

I think campaing-able terrains are good, but non-campaign terrains are ok too.
The only problem is…. there is no reason to spend single minute on BMS terrains, until the core engine is in dev state (and there is no relevant info what will bring the future). -

Not the point. The point is to have more RW Training Ranges where MP activities can take place. The KOTAR Range in the Koreas is a great example…but only one. Red Flag scenarios in Alaska, the current Nevada Range project, both based in RW examples/ideas/rules of conduct - yeah, I love those ideas; bring 'em on! The fact that producing a Theater is difficult and is a long slog is understandable…I encourage folks to keep their efforts going. But I’d rather have these options available to use vice just “playing a game”…MMV
-
I too have absolutely NO interest in campaigns or action or aerial warfare or linked objectives or ground war or…
Hang on… This IS the MSFS forum, right…? No…? I’m in a Military Flight Combat Simulation forum…?! WTF…?
My bad. I’m a dot. Got landscapes to check out…!!

Exactly! We do these massive training events together, where we all takeoff at the same time and then go to our individual MOAs to train whatever DLO we are out there for the day to knock out. Everyone says it’s an absolute blast and super immersive because you see everyone ramp, takeoff, and then you get the traffic on arrival when you come back. Sometimes if you’re training with tankers in the air, you’ll randomly meet flights when you get to the tanker and then have to use the applicable procedures of waiting a mile back until the last guy of the proceeding flight gets on the boom, then move up to observation left at that time. It’s the little details that everyone seems to enjoy, at least at my wing.

I hear you, I do think you’re misunderstanding the point of this hypothetical theater. It’s just about having somewhere to fly other than an active war zone and learning procedures, unlike ITO (Syria), KTO (North Korea), Balkans (Serbia). And just in response to your other post about lack of knowledge of the work involved, I do acknowledge it, even in my original post.
I’m not one who can spend the time on it because I have my VFW which eats up ALL of my free time and then some, but others don’t have the same constraints as I do, so it wasn’t to ask so much that it would be done, but more to get the idea into the communities consciousness so maybe one day, someone who does love building theaters might do it. I definitely have no expectation from just suggesting the question
As far as MSFS, it’s would be able using realistic airspace rules, some type of Red vs Blue ROE and the associated terrain that goes into it. It would be a great place to maintain the 16 odd some currency items that are required in the F-16 to be considered CMR.
So no worries, if you don’t see the value in that, it just might not be what you are looking for in your sim experience!
At any rate, wasn’t trying to make a controversial thread, just wanted someone to see this and say, “Hey! that’s a great idea, let’s see what we can do!” Hope that makes more sense to you gorn.

Guys… would be very cool if it was made like Ikaros for exmple that it has in its settings via the configuration too choose between versions (training-Campaign mode) And everybody would be happy. And i believe that a cold war scenario over there would be awesome u know old days USSR vs USA… Think about it… it has a potential to be awesome if the landscape also is. One of the things i always enjoyed is the Balkans theater exactly for that for the landscape and i still prefer to fly a mission in Balakans rather in Korea.
-
What would be WAY cool is if we had training Range theaters for all of the major operating Training Ranges/OP Areas world wide…and then VSs could host each other for MP exercises on local Ranges for “exchange training” like in RL.
But I can only but dream of such……

You’re telling me… wrong: don’t tell me that, mate

So we are (at least) two

Well there’s one issue already as concerning data for Alaska. To get the GIS E00 data for Hydrography(river/streams/lakes) for Alaska, you have to pay for it at. And I won’t do that.
Other than that I have everything else, and the SRTM data:
The theater would have to be 128Seg although it would only take up about 64 Seg as the SRTM data is cut off on the east side of Alaska, it’s all water. Of course that could be filled in with blank land but it’s not really worth it.
The above pic is with TerrainView minimized and cutting off the half of the 128Segments, this is a shot of the entire view of the theater in TerrainView:

Also, I just wanted to say, the only reason I checked to see if I had this data to even attempt this is because of “wray79”, his original post and his post responding to me about where he is located up there, sort of hit a einnie tieeeeeeneee, soft spot in me.
But, if the fact was that I did not have the correct data of the location of his whereabouts I would not have even made the previous post.
So, in a way, because of him, I checked to see if I actually had the data.(Odds where I did, I have just about the entire earth!!) LOL

How much does the data cost? And that is very thoughtful of you Cloud 9!

I don’t know, you would have to go here http://www.geocomm.com/
Have to create a login, then got to the GIS Data tab, click on Download GIS Data, then the US shows up, click on the Alaska icon, click on Statewide Data, goto Hydrography - 1M - E00 Format and there you will see the Drainage - Network E00 data at top.
I’ll try to hotlink it: http://data.geocomm.com/catalog/US/61095/group105.html
It’s only a Premium Download which is weird you can get the Drainage info for just about anywhere as a Normal Download there?? Don’t want or need the CD/DVD, just the download, I’m sure it’s probably cheaper.
The only reason I won’t get it is I have absolutely no money tied into the net like Paypal or even a bank account.

It’s it is $4.15 like the drainage data, I’ll buy it. That is a small price to pay for something such as this (again even if a someone such as yourself was willing) and I would be most grateful. I’ll try and register and take a look. If you find out before I can get on there, PM me Cloud 9!

I PM’d you with explanation.
