As I’ve finally got a fair understanding about how the different pieces of equipment in the f16 function and the correct way to employ them, Im now noticing how poor my BFM skills are as Im getting shot down ALOT. Im now heavily referencing the manuals to learn about BFM. One word I keep seeing that Im not sure exactly what it is referencing (as far entering the TC window and maintaining lag/lead pursuit once the fight is on) , is the limiter. I cant seem to find that in the manual.
Can I grab a life line or a “cheat” if you will and get one of you more knowledgeable fellows to explain that for me. Im sure the answer is going to be obvious once I receive it, but as for now I need a teeny bit of help.

So the flight control laws of the F-16 include several limiters that as the name suggests, limit the amount of performance available in order to protect either the plane or the pilot. If a section tells you to pull to the limiter, its a simple way of saying pull your stick all the way back, and the jet will handle the rest.

FLCS limiters are provided in all three axes to help prevent departures/spins.AOA/G Limiter
Refer to Figure 1-58. In cruise gains, the AOA/g limiter reduces the positive g available as a function of AOA. The negative g available is a function of airspeed. Below 15 degrees AOA, the maximum positive g available is +9g. As AOA increases, the maximum allowable positive g decreases. The positive g limit and maximum AOA depend on the position of the STORES CONFIG switch . In CAT I, positive g decreases to a value of 1g at 25 degrees AOA. Maximum commanded AOA is approximately 25.5 degrees. In CAT III, maximum AOA varies from approximately 16-18 degrees as a function of GW and g. The negative g available above approximately 250 knots is - 3g. Below 250 knots, the available negative g varies between -3g and zero g as a function of airspeed, altitude, and AOA. In takeoff and landing gains, the STORES CONFIG switch has no effect on limiting or gains. Maximum positive g is a function of airspeed and AOA. The negative g command limit is not a function of airspeed. It is a fixed limit. The maximum
AOA for 1g is approximately 21 degrees. In inverted or upright departures, the AOA/g limiter will override stick pitch commands if the MPO is not engaged. The MPO can always override the negative g fu nction of the limiter. It can also override the AOA function of the limiter when the AOA exceeds 35 degrees. Refer to MANUAL PITCH OVERRIDE (MPO) SWITCH, this section.There are a few other limiters in the FLCS control laws, but if a section tells you to pull on the limiter (as does the HARTS section, for example), its another way of saying ‘pull back all the way on your stick / apply maximum aft stick pressure’. As discussed at the helpful link TeeSquare provided, pulling to the limiter is not necessarily (read: usually will not) going to give you the maximum sustained performance for the aircraft. It may be worth familiarising yourself with E-M diagrams and energy theory at the same time as studying BFM concepts - Shaw’s Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering is quite good in this regard, despite some drawbacks in other areas.
If you can find a copy, it may also be worth your time to have a read of the F-16 dash one manual.

thank you I appreciate it. Im very frustrated I must say. If I fly the f16 like the manual explains I get shot down 100% of the time in furball. If I fly just “willy nilly” like its a video game I almost always win. I want to be good and managing speed and energy and fly the plane as the manual suggest. It just doesn’t work well for me and leaves me so frustrated I completely shut down the pc and walk away in disgust…grrrrrr I want to learn this ….why is it so hard to follow instruction and so eay when I just fly the plane like a video game lol grrrrrrr
edit: if I was managing my G’s correctly like the manual instructs I wouldn’t get shot down as much, im obviously having beginner issues controlling the aircraft in a tactical and efficient manner.

Well keep in mind it is a video game when in furball mode… aircraft respawn when they get shot down.
Id recommend match play for practicing BFM.
Its also probably worth noting that its going to take time and effort to learn BFM the way the manual explains it, and finding a teacher will help cut that down a bit. Focus on one area at a time and learn the skills in that area as completely as you can, first. The prototypical approach is to teach offensive BFM, then defensive BFM, then high aspect BFM. If you are having any trouble getting the aircraft to do what you want, it may be worth focusing on some core handling skills first. Otherwise, start with offensive BFM (and ideally a training partner or IP to help you) and drill the core skills there before moving on.

My internet speed is 1-MBPS. From what I understand that isn’t fast enough to do any training online with a training partner….wish my internet was faster!! Id give my left…ugh…you know…to get in some MP time!!

Its not that low… you should at the least be able to do dogfights with that connection, if its stable. Certainly you would be better off not hosting a server for campaigns, I think. You might still be able to participate in one, though.

As far as anything goes, I get shot down a lot too. I have learned one thing from all of the bullet holes in the seat my pants. In a campaign, when you get into it, play the part of a lion. Notice the lion always goes for the weakest prey on the edge of a herd. After all, he want to eat, not run the last little bit of gas out his stomachs. So, if the ATC schedules a strike mission a hundred miles beyond the FLOT (Forward Line of Troops), you would be better off changing the mission to strike something on the edge. Or you could delete the mission in the ATO list. However, if you choose to fly this strike mission as fragged, try to adjust your steer points so that you do not fly right over a known threat.
You may find, as I have, that BMS Falcon is addictive.

Record your flights and post the resulting ACMI or VHS file and I’m sure people would be happy to tell you where you’re doing it wrong and how to fix it
Get TacView and watch your fights as well. That program is worth it’s weight in gold!! Not sure how you would weigh a bit of software though….

As the others have mentioned, the fastest way to learn is with another person who knows BFM. I learned with a lot of reading and practicing and it took a long time. The biggest trouble that I had was converting the diagrams into a visual picture from inside the pit and getting the AI to cooperate with the specific thing that I wanted to practice. It is much easier to set up situations with another human pilot.
A good document in the BMS docs folder is called T-38C INTRODUCTION TO FIGHTER FUNDAMENTALS - AETC Tactics, Techniques And Procedures 11-1.pdf. It shows you how to get into a turning circle and give images of what things should look like from inside the cockpit. The T-38 cockpit looks different but you should be able to easily adjust.

Thank you TeeSquare. I will def add that documentation into my list of studies. I need to get my BMS back to the vanilla install but once I do that how do I go about trying to to get with a training partner online? Ive never attempted to try MP yet because as Ive stated earlier my internet speed is 1-Mbps and I have been under the impression that my internet wouldn’t support MP.

Arty has a list of VFWs on his hot list. You could browse thru them and find one that is a good fit for you. For BMS 4.33, 1024 (1mb) connection speed is the minimum for a client so you may be ok if your connection is steady and you are the only one online in your house. I have to collect the devices in my house from my kids when I host flights because they like to watch videos and it sometimes causes a crash.
Things to look for in a wing are their location, flight times and what type of group you like. They range from very realistic with graded training courses to show up and fly and try not to shoot each other down.
