I work at a desk too and only recently we’ve had a briefing on the potential dangers of staring at monitors all day and things you can do to minimize the risk.
LOL, the only thing you can really do to minimize risk is to quit this job and do something else. Of course that is not really an option. But as a matter of fact, staring at a monitor all day long is not the greatest thing for your eyes and probably will lead to some degradation over time. Looking away every so often might help a little but probably wont change the situation.
Coming from the holidays having been out in the open the whole time, I clearly notice improvement in my vision as opposed after continued weeks of computer work, I can feel the strain of the eyes.VR might still not be good enough for prolonged sessions, especially with flight sims. Mainly the angular resolution is too low. (which doesnt mean it isn’t actually a lot of fun already). Improving the angular resolution (without compromising the FOV) will reduce eye strain especially in complex scenes such as flight sims. But easier said than done, because it is not only a matter of the HMDs, but also on the required processing power.
I for myself cannot notice any special or additional eye strain from using VR. But I also dont use it daily and individual sessions typically dont exceed an hour, so…
But really, the constant staring at a monitor at work gives me more concern regarding my eyes than occasionally enjoying VR experiences. It’s just nothing compared to having to stare on a monitor for 8+ hours a day…

Hmm I think chihirobelmo’s launcher features modifiers like a pinky-shift, that is a pretty useful feature that the BMS UI lacks of course (am I right?). I never encountered issues with that thanks to foxy but I don’t have a lot of experience with other tools, I can see some potential issues there.

Reasonably priced joystick user has to edit text file manually because they want to use pinky shift, which setup will not show up on UI screen. Then pinky shift stuck bug cause game unplayable for them. Fixing those stuck by assigning another pinky shift callback to shifted layer, is not well known knowledge. IIRC its also not on the manual. After few days, axis assign will disappear because they unplugged/plugged unsed/new device for other sim setup, they think they need to setup BMS again and that is enough reason to lose motivation to fly.

This basically - always look at how many were polled! A more relevant percentage might be what is 800 out of the entire player base. Typically people on forums have been a tiny minority of the player base even though they may act like the vocal majority.

I just like the fact I can easily setup 2 and 3 way switches in seconds with the alternative launcher rather than configure Target (which I hate). While most people who fly BMS have at least some technical knowledge, as that kind of thing is in the sim itself, some who would like to fly it shy away due to a not exactly intuitive UI when setting things up. I hear that sometimes on forums/etc.

I don’t know about other countries but DSE requirements (Health & Safety) at your typical company is arms length away from the monitor with the top of the monitor around eye level (IIRC).
Eye strain /fatigue is the biggest problem and is made worse the closer your eyes are to the screen. So looking away and focusing on something else is a typical way to alleviate this. The other is to rest your eyes fully but even then not supposed to cause permanent eye damage.
I expect some VR users are on it for the same time they were on the monitor - a lot more then one hour don’t see why they would not be. Ideally taking the unit off to rest eyes but that takes discipline. Various bits of advise from opticians etc would suggest eye strain is still an issue with VR……best to look at good sources.

i really would like to see “live” someone not able to set up his joystick in BMS, i dont get it, really
edit: i must admit i dont use anything else than a cougar….
however, pitbuilders are able to set up extremely complex set up, so i beleive BMS is not so shitty finally in that area
Based on my personal experience, I think the biggest difficulty is for new users which are not already knowledgeable on the functions of the F-16 HOTAS.
For example, I started up BMS for the first time and went in the “settings” menu to bind the keys of my Thrustmaster HOTAS-X… Only to be presented with a reeeeeeally long list of callbacks, with very cryptic names. Which are the useful ones? It is really difficult to know if you have no experience. This is especially true the less buttons and hats your joystick has compared to the real HOTAS: how can a complete newbie know that SimTMSUp is much more important than SimTMSLeft, for instance?
Luckily there was a ready-made profile (by Blueraven, I believe) for my model of joystick, which allowed me to start playing around a bit and learn by doing.
Nowadays, if I had to rebind all my keys I could probably do it with no problems (except maybe for the pinky shift, for which I would have to look around the forum), but what if I didn’t have the ready-made keyfile? I would have had to study in great detail the manuals… I probably would have given up playing BMS, instead!All this, in addition to the points raised by chihirobelmo, which mean the process is a bit counter-intuitive even for an user experienced in the F-16 (but not experienced in the quirks of BMS).

Confirmed by the majority of new users having issues. Most of them are related to their Hotas
We tried to address this in the next manual suite by having a dedicated chapter to that setup with multiple examples, existing or adapting past ones and even a glimpse of creating new ones
We will also try to provide more ready made full configuration files… -
Let’s take it vice versa… My personal experience when tried dcs lately.
When I opened the joystick configuration - set commands, the first and last thing I did , and never opened it again, was to close it right away.
Not to mention setting the cougar mfds… Didn’t even thought about it.
I didn’t want to mess my BMS settings.
So I just fly the a10 like a brick in instant action… I havent even heard the bbbrrrrrrtttttt of the cannon…About others setting up controls in BMS, I personally have set tenths, and still get requests and questions… Ppl that just bought a PC to fly don’t even know what windows explorer and Alt tab is… Talking about setting controls is rocket science.
For years I have a manual set in my cougar and want to switch to a clean dx setup and have more realistic functionality, knowing the trouble of going through and the pain deciphering the Excel for key commands once again, well I’m still with the old thing…

Yep, great point. I recently went back to BMS and the whole setup thing was a grim and turgid process. Making the axis file read only etc eeeeuuuhhh!

I thing Vr is in early stages in Gaming industry and uncomfortable, now for flight simulators if I had the money I would built a dome with projectors

Once VR is of a suitable resolution (and the GPU grunt to run it is affordable) and can augment well with hardware it will be awesome for simming, but as you say, not yet.
The problem I can imagine is how do you use a physical MFDs/ICP with a VR headset strapped to your face? Likewise, I don’t want to take my hands off HOTAS to click around blindly. VR needs reliable eyeball tracking or something like that so you can click without using a mouse.

Like I said VR is just a gimmick what you speak of will be when the real evolution begins that is Mixed Reality.
Mixing VR with your actual surroundings. Also must be done without putting ****ing tv screens on your face. -

We will also try to provide more ready made full configuration files…I hope those official preset and creating new setup instruction will help new guys a lot. Even good virtual pilots are not always good hardware expert at the same time, and we were losing fellows from BMS because of this.

In the case of Oculus Rift eyes will be focused to 2m in front so I suppose its much safer than looking the monitor closer to find tally or you edit excel sheet for your daily work.

I find the in-game Setup to be pretty nice, but it does seem to be pretty hardware specific - HOTAS Cougar specific. For me that’s not an issue because that’s what I’m using, but I’m not sure how you solve that for everyone…by addressing specific controllers/Setups in the Manuals? Or a separate Controller manual?

Of is that because the Cougar is actually very specific to the real F-16 Hotas? maybe?
