Air to Air first contact and battle with Mig 19
-
Hi All,
I would like to share my experience and get some hints from you with more than me (much more :)).
I prepared a CAP mission with TE to cover a specific area. I put some enemy around it. Only a single group of 2 Mig 19 (without weapon a part Gun) enter in this area during the mission.
My F16 is equipped with AIM 9M because i would like to traing my dogfight experience with at first some advantage. I read some documentation around AIM 9M, aspect angle, Tone/Uncage stuff etc. And sow some video on dogfight (not much because i have very short free time to dedicate to it…).
During the mission i intercept the 2 mig, for one of this i gain altitude and goes behind him. After some dogfight in which i try to avoid loosing enemy view i get a good angle and fire! One miss, and one shoot. An explosion appears as a smile on my face. Good shoot.
While i was busy with the first Mig 19 , i loose the other one. I try to see it but without result (right, left…nothing). So i ask many time to AWACS that give me heading each time this was change. At the end this Mig 19 goes behind me and with his gun won the battle and i dead without glory.
I understood that i was wrong in how i approach the research of the enemy and the fact to use AWACS when the enemy is close to you is not a good idea.
Could you suggest any hints or remind me any documentation in which i can improve a little this?
Many thanks!! Ciao

If you don’t see your opponent just assume he is at your six, so spend your scan time also looking behind you.
A fighter without radar is deadly silent on your RWR!Also try auto-aquisition modes in DGFT. Sometimes it can find a contact on your turn plane well before you see it.

Hi Vandroy,
Yes i have no RWR warning. I will try auto-aquisition mode. Thanks for suggestion.

Do you have a head movements tracker like a trackIR?
-
HI Lorik,
No i haven’t. I tried time ago but i have some problem…i felt sick after some minuts…it is not natural for me to turn head but see in front of you the monitor…
Anyway it is a “must to have” in your opinion?
Thanks, Ciao

Head tracking is definitely a must have, but it doesn’t have to be the overpriced “TrackIR” stuff. You can get a used PSEye camera, a sturdy, made of metal delanclip and free head tracking software like opentrack or FaceTrackNoIR for less than $50 (or even less than that if you build your own clip which can be done for $10 in parts).
All the best,
Uwe

Hoover said it all; I have a trackIR, but I’m not a very good DIY guy. DelanClip is cheaper and very good also.
Yes, it’s a must have. People who do dogfight use their head - I mean, litteraly

Hi Lorik,
OK Got it.
Thanks

Random question - how does BMS deal with gun-laying radars? Many MiG-19s will have no radar at all, but I assume the P’s radar had provision for gun-laying?

You could use padlock for the time being until you get Trackir. It will lock your pilots head to the nearest AA target. Look up the default key for it ,and in the SETUP you can change how well it works like if it will lock target beyond visual or not. I used it for the longest time without cheating I would only use it once I ‘seen’ the enemy air craft.
If there is anybody who made this sim work without the luxury that would be me. Flew this sim with only keyboard and mouse for the majority of learning to fly/land the aircraft. You can do it it just sucks !.
