Mode 3 IFF
-
Hello,
How does mode 3 IFF work on the the real F16? Is there green and yellow interrogation like we do in Modes 1, 2, and 4 or is it basically transponder only like an airliner? How do we identify civil aircraft with IFF?
Thank you

How do we identify civil aircraft with IFF?
Thank you
A question apparently being asked in Iran right now…

Everything is detailed in BMS manuals.

Yes I read all of that material. I was trying to understand interrogation in mode 3 specifically. How would you know the code of the civil aircraft? If my mode 3 is set to 0423 and the civil plane is set to 6545 then that will always return “unknown” in yellow. To get a friendly ping I would need to set my code to 6545, correct? I assume ATC would provide the military pilot with the civil planes code?

To know that a M3 is “friendly” it just has to reply the code “you’ve” asked him to set.
To know “who” is behind a M3 code, it just has to set it on the code it has been assigned to.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviation_transponder_interrogation_modes

In other words, the F-16’s interrogator will not show you what code the other plane is broadcasting, it will only tell you whether or not it matches the code you’re scanning for.

Will Mode 5 be implemented in BMS or are the details on that mode classified?

May I ask two questions: Mode V
- Will the real F-16 be modified? … and when?
- What will you be able to do with the MV that you can’t do with the MIV in BMS?
EDIT: Lets all start using efficiently our M1-2-3-4 … then we maybe will talk about the M5 later.

You can user IFF interr as a second radar to search those players whose M1,M2 ,M3 codes are turned on.
light them up on your HSD screen without your FCR being activated.
So be careful when you set foot on hostile airspace and make sure your IFF is only M4 activated! if not, you may be ambushed by your adversary with the same tactics
Iranian F-4 and F-14 equipped with AN/APX-81 “combat Trees” IFF system interrogated Iraqi MIGs .then they knew the position of Migs without FCR activated.

It certainly works well on North Korean MD-500s. They’re annoyingly hard to spot on radar due to their small size and low altitude, but they do have IFF.
