How to Z-bias
-
What 3dsmax bug? … in 3dsmax 2014 I could list some, but eventually not related to yours.
IIRC in LE select the first runway markings node, then add a new node and change it to z-bias.
This new node will be added above the selected, adjust it’s values to 0.01 or 0.02.Go to the last node of runway markings and add a new z-bias node and set its value back to 0.00.
Make sure only runway marking nodes are affected.z-bias node 0.02
rw node
rw node
…
zbias node 0.00As said all IIRC and play with z-bias values to get hopefully better results.
Cheers, :yo:

LSThanks Lazystone. The 3ds max bug was related with texturing, it is not about F4 exporter or something like that. I solved that. I exactly did the steps like you said. However, I did get better result(less z fighting), but the main problem(z fighting) is still going on.

Hello again,
This is the Osan’s runway part. As you can see zbias set for the last two node, right? This two node are the bottom parts or base parts of the runway part. But in LODEditor Manual and also Lazystone said zbias value must set before and after the nodes those are we want to stay on top. If it is so, why in Osan’s zbias value set to the nodes that supposed to stay down?
-
Osan runways don’t use zbias for signs, only for skid marks. This is two nodes that must be rendered as first surface, that’s why they use zbias.

Eghi, is it possible to give me more information about creating Osan? Becuase I am out of ideas for my models to fix z fighting. The only option is cutting signs on the base layer.

Mhm back in 2018 you where given the solution:

Hi Arty,
My problem is still z-fighting of the ruunway marks. I tried your solution, I tried other solutions but nothing worked. The only option left is cutting the parts out of the runway.

What is the ptype in your model? In LOD exporter select Show Summary Info, then in the Export summary window you will see the result.

I normaly select p type 9 in Batch Node for all the nodes. But export comes with ptype 26 from 3ds max. I also tried p type 6 for all the nodes.
Here are the my 3ds max files for one of the runway:
http://www.mediafire.com/folder/6m8alwnhbotgl/Runway_03L
One files has all the polies at 0 (z=0), other file has the marks at 0,1 feet, but base of the runway at 0. There are also texture files.

You should set materials in 3DsMax not LOD Editor.

And besides the theory a ptype tutorial

Thanks for the help. Yes, I managed to set ptype 6 with 3ds Max. But still having z-fighting problem although setting z-bias.:(
Were you guys able to manage a non z fighting LOD from the files that provided?

I looked at the file - you have to make cuts to the runway polygons so everything underneath the markings is deleted. Your runway needs to be full of holes basically. This way the markings polys can fill the gaps, you can join the runway to the markings polys, weld then planar align them all as one item. No z-bias required.
PS - same on the taxiway markings, you cannot allow two polys to overlap or you’ll get z-fighting.
I wish I had more time to help, but I don’t. Sorry for leaving you hanging there.
Have a look at this, look at northern threshold (I have hidden the markings) - see how I cut out the runway beneath the markings, you need to do this all over.

Thank you Malc, I believe for my modelling technique cutting is the only way. But there are other ways to model runway etc. right?

Not that I know of mate, no - this is exactly how I did all my bases for Korea 4.35

There are 3.
1. Just texture on the runway taxiway part.
2. Runway and above the markings as separate model with zbias setting.
3. Runway and cutting the markings as separate models. Now what exactly is your z fighting problem?
Have you tried a bigger value for zbias? Are all your runway markings one model or each party a separate one?
Maybe some screenshots or the model could help us understand your issue and where your mistake or correction should be made.Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T818A using Tapatalk

My problem is runway marks(all of them) are z - fighting with runway texture. I tried bigger zbias values, better result but it did not cured my problem 100%. Being separate or together also did not solved the problem. The best way I believe is cutting the marks out of the runway. Thank you.
