Setting up X65F (need some help)
-
Hello guys!
Do any of you have the old X65F?
A friend of mine is selling his (used, but like new) and I´m testing it right now. I have an old Sidewinder FF2, which still provides an excellent flight controls precision (in my opinion… maybe that´s because I´m used to it:-)). BUT it´s an eight-button stick, no HOTAS concept at all!
So, I´m having trouble setting up the X65F buttons and knobs.I installed the latest drivers and the Saitek Smart Technology (SST) software.
Some of the buttons aren´t recongnized by Falcon. That´s ok because I can “trick” the system by assigning keys with the SST.
But some isn´t right. For example, I tried to set one of the throttle HAT switches to control the radar cursor movement. Easy task using the SST. Checked Falcon´s setup>controllers page, and it seemed to work fine (the HAT switch input corresponded to the correct command - radar cursor), BUT there is a problem when trying that in game: the cursor won´t stop. Each input I give into the buttons seems to correpond to a LOT of inputs into the game. It´s impossible to control the cursor.
Another example: I set the uncage button as “U” (in falcon setup), and then set ont of my throttle buttons as “U” (in SST). Once I short-press this button, the game won´t receive an “U” input, but an “U-U-U-U-U-U-U-U-U-U-U-U…” input
Well, that´s it. If you have any experience with this issue and others I may find on next steps, please share.
Thanks!!

Hi Grifo
There is a key file for the X65F and setup instructions in the Docs/01input devices/03 Hotas setup/X65F.Hope these point you in the right direction.

I have an X65F. And set mine up in a mixed way. SO mainly 32 buttons as DX and the rest through SST software.
For radar cursor I use the ministick which works perfectly. Way better than a 4 way switch with bands and key presses. Concerning repeated keypreses you need to use advanced commands in SST software and use press and release
Can provide my profileIn order to use the ministick as radar cursor you would have to give up one of the other axis. so either twist rudder or throttle right.
Another way to have a full DX setup would be to use Joystick Gremlin and vjoy and split your X65F into 2 virtual devices so you could go around the 32 DX button limit

I have an X65F too and it works flawlessly. It sounds to me your HOTAS is not “releasing” the keystroke commands correctly. I’ve set up my X65F the following way:
- I bound as many HOTAS buttons and hats as possible directly in the in-game setup. I guess the Alternative Launcher may be used for this aswell. The point is I tried avoiding SST as much as possible.
- I used single keys instead of key combos (for example, the “U” is a single key without any “modifiers”) for the HOTAS buttons and hats that are not recognized by BMS. Keycombos are known to induce problems especially on their “release” (been there) on SST. If you try this, please note that this may require rebinding some functions to make them single-key commands in the in-game setup.
- I use only one mode on the HOTAS and no shifted states.
Which mode have you selected for the HOTAS?

Hi Falcon!
I loaded this keyfile and worked on it as a base config. It´s pretty much what I was planning to set.
But the problem are the unrecognized buttons, SST config and so on…
Thank you!! -

Thank you for replying!
I would appreciate a lot if you can provide me your profiles!
I can´t find any “advanced commands” in SST software. Maybe I don´t have the correct version of it. It´s knda hard to find (downloaded a shared folder from Fluke - BMS forum user - with some drivers and SST software files)I´m still trying to make it work with ingame setup / SST… Gremlin and Vjoy might be next steps
Thanks! -
–?
Hello! thanks for answering!
I installed alternative launcher (never heard about it… it has a way better interface!). I´m trying to bound whatever ir possible in the ingame setup, but of course, still have some unrecognized buttons.
About keybinding to single key commands, thats a clever solution! I´ll try it again
Well, I haven´t changed modes (it´s on M1 right now)It would be very helpful if I could take a look at your profiles, so I can adjust into my preferences.
Seeyou!

Grifo, a bit of advice from another Saitek user; use the SST software as little as possible and preferably not at all. For starters, it is crap and hasn’t been updated in ages. Secondly, the most user-friendly way to map your stick and throttle is as close as possible to the real one, which is easiest done in Alternative Launcher using the named functions rather than trying to look up “Alt+/” “Fire gun” and mapping that to your trigger, then trying to set up a shifted mode for “Fire Laser” on trigger etc etc.
I’ve been there, don’t do that to yourself!

Grifo, I definitely concur with Javelin. When I first started out with the -65 I didn’t know about AL didn’t understand the whole dx thing, so my profile was about 90% SST. My final setup was maybe 1% SST.

what key on the throttle controls the cursor? I loaded the key file that comes with BMS 4.35 but still cursor doesn’t move.

If you are using the predelivered BMS - BasicDX X-65F.key file you have to load the BMS - BasicDX X-65F.pr0 through the Saitek/MadCatz profile editor as well. The cursor is set up to the ministick on the throttle and set up as band in the X65 Profile editor.
If you want to stay with having the ministick with keystrokes I suggeast to change the band to use an advanced command instead of simple keypress with propper press and release order to avoid floating cursor.
I personally don’t use any keystrokes on my X65 for cursor on the ministick but use the cursor as real analog axis. But in order to be able to do that diue to the restiction of 8 axis per devices you would have to give up one of your other axis. So i.e as I use rudder pedals I gave up the twiest rudder axis as I don’t use it at all and on a forcesensing stick it’s not really usefull. Giving up an axis and reordering the axis to have the ministick available to be selected as analog axis would require to add a new axis order to the registry. I wanted I can supply the information how to do it

There is a MOD, which applies to the Windows 7 registry key, I just can’t say if it works for Windows 10!
This Agave_Blue thread is very good, good read!
I hope I helped you!

Thank you for the reply. What is exactly Saitek/MadCatz profile and where can I find it? I did load BMS - BasicDX X-65F.pr0 but I placed it in Falcon BMS 4.35\User\Config folder along with BMS - BasicDX X-65F.key file.

The profile itself is the BMS - BasicDX X-65F.pr0 but it has to be loaded with the software that comes with your X65F.
If your X65F Driver and software is correctly installed you should have an icon in your taskbarA) Software installed but no profile loaded
B) Software installed and profile loaded
if no profile is loaded right click the icon
In order to have profiles directly selectable as in 1 they need to placed in
C:\Users\Public\Documents\SmartTechnology Profiles
to load them from another save folder select 2
and got to programmingselect open and browse to where your BMS - BasicDX X-65F.pr0 is saved
then select the profile button to attach the profile to your stick abd close the Profile editor software
The icon in the taskbar now should show as in image B) (green highlighted)
In addition to all said above some hints about the 32 DX Button Limitation. As BMS is limited to 32DX buttons and 8 Axis per Device you are not able to use all the buttons on the X65F as DX. There are 2 ways to be able to use all buttons on the HOTAS
1. Mixed DX and keystroke setup (the way is use my stick)
As the buttons marked as 2 as well as those on the additionionla Panel go over the 32 DX limitation if have those bound with keystrockes in the ProfileEditor software2. Pure DX setup
in order to be able to use all buttons on the X65F as DX buttons you would have to use 3rd party software such as vJoy and JoystickGremlin so basically create 2 Virtual Devices with vJoy and remap your physical buttons and axis to the 2 virtual devices using JoystickGremlin. after diong so use those new virtual devices to map in BMS -
thank you very much for going through so much trouble to explain it. I do show now a green Icon. Now the mouse moves but once it does it never stops moving from side to side or up to down. I wonder if it needs calibration because that’s what the cougar does and once calibrated it goes away. Is there a calibration for X65F?

Again as posted in my first answer if you are using the prebuilt BMS profile and encounter a floating cursor you have to open and change the profile as I showed in my screenshots and switch the key press only setup on the bands to use an advanced command with spearate press and release commands in propper order
-
you can try this profile. It’s the one delivered with BMS 4.35 just the commands for the radar cursor band are switched from simple keypress to avanced commands with seperate press and release sequences

the files that came with BMS 4.35 are BMS-BasicDX X-65F.key, BMS-BasicDX X-65F_MFD.key, and BMS-BasicDX.pr0. But nothing like BMS X-65F_DX_advcursor.mp3 which I wasn’t able to download.

Ok seems that some browser treat pr0 files hosted on google drive as sound files I uploaded the BMS X-65F_DX_advcursor.pr0 within a zip file so that shouldn’t confuse the browser
