Somalia Theatre ?

Despite some “ups and downs” @ FF I honestly miss that teamwork feel. Oh well, I know that it too did not carried on forever, but it was nice while it lasted.
I agree Ted, but, as we know, for what ever reasons, all things must come to an end. We had some great times. Thanks

5 minutes work… (Gulf of Aden):
Is easy to do, because it is boring.
Not urban, river, etc. ……Even a limit of 4096 tiles, should not be big problem, looking at it:I think that’s a good idea for a new theater. But….
Cheers,
Arek.Great job Eghi, very good looking terrain. It doesn’t look boring at all. I think the rural nature of the theatre makes it a great theatre for desert tank war campaigns. Also, it makes it an exciting possibility of engaging older Russian against similar Russian equipment using classic weapons. Say something like FAB bombs and Atoll missiles.
Or, with the right type of SAM and AAA defenses along with a fictional upgraded Somali Air Force, we could have USN/NATO versus North East Africa campaigns. Or we could have have combination of the above two scenarios. It would a very different, but challenging type theatre.
How much of the terrain do you have done? If you could spare some time for more terrain work, I can work on some artwork and a template.
-
If you can give me terrain, I’ll look at throwing some campaign stuff on it.

Thank Tom. My tiles are for use, by whoever wants it but the crux of the matter is to make/edit the theater and this is where the good and (as much as Falcon4 tile terrain engine allows) “realistic” feel comes from. BTW any news about Redko’s project? That was really good desert IMHO.
Good day Ted, he is offline since over a year now, no one got a clue what happened.
Hope redko comes back because his artwork reg. tiles in IL-2 always rocked and he had a way of creating tex and aligning them in the IL-2 engine which is far beyond my horizon.
I tried to learn the basics of map editing in this sim and it is the same in IL-2 as here in Falcon: The guys who do the 1st class work have years of experience and self-education on their backs. -
PS: Imagine a Black Hawk down scenario where the Deltas and Rangers got F-16 and AH-64 support.
That would rock. -

Hmm …ok… If you find some more people to work, I can build the whole terrain.
Sort of thing:
I’ll think about it after holiday.

Eghi, we can ask around for additional help. In the meantime I’ll start building a template sort of like the one I had for Kore 2012, using Molni’s database. I’ll see if I can get some help regarding the UI. If you can send me your map, I’ll see about getting it incorporated into the rest of the artwork as part of the campaign selection screen. When the template is done, I’ll post a link so other contributers can start filling the threatre’s holes.
Your choice of terrain tiles look amazing Eghi. I’ll admit, I have never been to Africa, but they look really good for such desert terrain.

That does look pretty amazing.

Just playing around, what do you folks think of this as the selection screen TDF file?

Nice trial my friend Gavin ;).
Maybe the “Somalia” can be “Somalia theater”. Just a thought.
Nikos. -
Nikos, do you mean like this?
-
@ Gavin and Arek
Hi guys.
Well in order to inform you about Somalian airports:
and their location:
When the time comes, just “pm” me ;).
Have a nice work at this theater.

The above may require 128 size theater. But that may be too risky for AI campaign. Africa horn is huge expanse of land.

You’re right, I propose to 64 segment , not more. This is what gave Neystratiou, housed in a frame of 64 segments:
My offer is this:
But… we need to Yemen in the theater? Maybe someone has another suggestion?
Here is everything for a new map. Maybe someone will do it better?

Here’s a little small folder I made to get a first impression during an IL-2 mod of how Djibouti looks regarding sea colour, land colours and vegetation. One tex in that for water shallows by my friend Bombsaway. Kept it in…
Wildly collected from google.
http://www.mediafire.com/?v9s1p2qfqbhuouxEdited, now with Dee-Jay’s shots and some shots deleted (copyright).
Moderators: Please delete all folders I post if there’s anytime an infringement (unintended).I am impressed every time I check various (even close as 500 miles) Sahara/African regions as how fast colours and vegetation change from red to brown to greyish kakhi to yellow and from scrub to rock to plantages etc.
So I gues Somalia does not look anything like Djibouti, albeit they’re neighbours.
Somalia is also huuge… -
I will be there in tree days … tell me if you want some other real pictures from the air…
-
EDIT: For info … those pic has been taken during an incredible good visibility day…
But “most of the time”, moisture % are so hight, that at FL150 you can’t see the ground … sky and below is completely withe!

http://www.mediafire.com/?tb9f1ck5mb7njh4Eghi, I think the picture in the lower left, the one below you words my offer is this, is the one we should use. I was thinking that some of Yemen should be included. This would allow land based NATO aircraft to be based for attacks into Somalia. Also, by including Yemen, we can also have an Ethopia/Somalia versus Yemen conflict included. Finally, I was thinking no matter what size the final map will be, the FLOT will be located in Somalia. Without Yemen and the Gulf of Aden as a barrier, blue aircraft taking off will face heavy SAM and AAA defense almost immediately once they are airborne. Reducing their intensity will be required to make the gameplay a little more enjoyable. We can reduce that pitfall by locating blue aircraft in Yemen. A USN carrier would also be required in any circumstances.
Let me know what you guys decide concerning the map. I have the rough template done for Somalia. I’m using Korea campaigns and terrain, but
