Solved Very strange Air-Ground Radar display

Just to add some fuel to the fire… ahem hmm… some info I mean , check out that video at 6:28 AG radar at GM mode 40nm, at 7:35 GMT mode and 7:43 SEA mode. It is really a nice video from a test pilot at GD. It also shows AA mode earlier on the video.

That’s more as I’d expect. The “sweep” appearance as it updates.

There might be some improvement to be brought as I think people are expecting a less “cut” aspect but the theory behind it is logical…

FYI, 6:28 is a DBS mode, zoomed in on a specific spot, that is not the full AG radar scope. And you can see the near and far edge of the DBS scan area in the top right and bottom left of the scope.

I just spent about 45 minutes in the ‘Landing’ Training mission.
I just put the plane on auto-pilot, went to A/G radar modes, trying GM, GMT, & SEA modes. I noticed that when I initially selected CRM–>GM mode, the display was blank until I ‘bumped’ the antenna elevation, at which time it immediately gave me a full-- what I would call normal or expected-- display. My first question to myself is: Why do I have to ‘bump’ the Antenna Elevation knob on my HOTAS to get a ground clutter display to appear?
The antenna elevation indicator is a ‘sideways T’ on the left side of the MFD display. Initially, when the Antenna Elevation middle is in the middle position on my HOTAS, the ‘sideways T’ hangs around the middle of the left side of the MFD display, as expected.
Everything is fine until I start moving the Antenna Elevation knob on my HOTAS, or switch back and forth from SP mode, change radar range, etc.
That’s when things get really screwy on the display. The ‘default’ positioning of my antenna elevation begins to inexplicably move downward along the left side of the display, for instance. And sometimes, the 60-degree horizontal scanning display indicator at the bottom of the MFD display stops completely!
The MFD display starts showing very narrow bands of returns, as though the vertical scanning azimuth is severely limited for some reason. Sometimes one side of the MFD shows ground radar feedback, but not the other side! There are some serious behavioral issues with the display.
This is not due to my plane being pointed away from the currently selected steerpoint, because the issues still occurred in SP mode as well, both with cursor enabled and not enabled.
I noticed that the EXP, DSB1, and DSB2 modes seems to operate without issues even when the NORM mode is acting crazy.
Definitely something going on here.

Yep, aslo @7:30 there’s radar in GMT mode, one can see it has 1 bar vertical scan (antenna marker on the left edge is not moving) and as far as I can see bottom of the screen is not displaying any returns.
I guess further improvement are gonna wait for new terrain. By logic the more perpendicular to the face of earth radar beam is the more area is covered, but terrain shadows would be extended and picture would be much more blurry (the same amount of energy for larger area). -
Well of course it is, theory, sound and logical. Just implementation maybe needs refinement.
… Locking radar to a steerpoint height is maybe a bit more complex then it seems.
What’s the point in AG mode looking straight at 20kft (stp) ?? - i understand from where it is coming , as system setup… but system maybe smarter , even overridden… or the planning could be smarter. etc… there is more logic behind it.
I mean , it is an AG “MODE” , so look-down in preset range … even said stp is fixed at 20k … How much of area is covered… as I’ve said , bi*** to calc , as you need zillion factors…
Probably computer is taking this into account/equation, for sure … if not , then BMS really should
Also, force radar to look up could be left as an option, since we have ante elev/

I’ve been practicing mavericks with the new a-g radar function via
technique, and with a little practice the a-g isn’t so bad after all. -
What I can tell is that the way radar has been modelled isn’t wrong… It might need polishing for sure.

Things to consider with the AG FCR
The AG FCR scans in one BAR only in comparison to the AA FCR which can scan 4 BAR.
The AA FCR at 20nm and 1 BAR will scan a volume of airspace of 60 deg in azimuth and 10000ft in elevation. Its clear that the radar beam is quite small in elevation.
The AG FCR footprint will increase or decrease depending on the tilt angle of the antenna the altitude and the height above ground
Antenna tilt (elevation) and aircraft altitude determine the patch of ground illuminated by the beam.
The antenna tilt thumbwheel has a detent or center position that allows antenna tilt to be automatically centered at the A-G cursor position (equal to AUTO TILT) . With auto tilt, the antenna will ALWAYS tilt to bracket the cursor position.
Antenna tilt will be relative to the cursors range, and the aircrafts altitude.
The steeper the antenna tilt , the smaller the radar beam footprint .

@Leech - That was an excellent explanation, with my appreciation. It’s just so disappointing to know that the A/G display from this point forward will be so limited in comparison to A/G displays in all earlier versions of Falcon BMS.
So, to be clear… you’re saying that it’s normal for the A/G radar in NORM mode to display very small limited segments of the ground at a time that take up only part of the MFD display? That flies in the face of every YouTube video of A/G radar displays I’ve ever seen.
Not trying to be argumentative. It just seems to be very strange that our most modern A/G radar display can’t show a full representation of the ground ahead, and videos I’ve seen back me up.

@MnMailman It will depend . You can get a full picture with you cursor at 20nm and altitude of 13K.
