Possible TrackIR failure in Windows 11 Pro.

@airtex2019
No apologies needed for a kind reply and some helping proposals, dear bro.Just let me explain, here, that I made no change of OS on my PC/system, this time.
I made more or less one year of experience with Windows 11 Pro before deciding to upgrade my PC with some kind of state-of-the-art hardware (I want to not tell here what it is, I don’t like to challenge nor being challenged), but keeping the overall good feeling with Win 11.And all went fine this time too, until a blessed day one of the latest OS security updates messed one app only: my TIR 5, indeed.
The rest of my story is known, I told it before, so I won’t make you mind with exposing it once again.
@Icer
Couldn’t agree more on all yours, dear friend.
Thanks a lot for your kind support.Update
The news here is that the NaturalPoint customer care guy who is responsably following my case promitted to get a PC equipped with Windows 11 Pro, trying to replicate what occurred to me.
Do you recall the world famous Homer’s poem “The Odissey”, by the way?I will keep on let you all informed further.
Promised that this story will end only after those at Natural Point will release a proper and definitive solution for out.
I am not the only guy in the world struggling with it, but are more than quite a few, and with any kind of simulation or game, you know? With best regards.

@Jackal Cool… yeah if this is a reproducible problem with Win11, then the folks at NP are well incentivized to figure it out and get it fixed.
Hope that happens soon.
Can TIR hardware be used with OpenTrack? Or does it still require the drivers from NP that don’t work.

@airtex2019 said in Possible TrackIR failure in Windows 11 Pro.:
Sorry it’s not really helpful advice, but the only advice I do have … is just never do a major OS upgrade.
Couldn’t agree more… learned hard way… previous system was upgraded from win8.1 till last version of win10 … that’s… , don’t even know how many major upgrades … YES Win8.1 … take that for system stability
Until it recently, in April '22, gone to sh*** , … actually not that much harsh, … but some net4 android mfd server application, which I need … duh… , failed to run AFTER last win10 major update 21h2 … just couldn’t debug… reinstall win10 , actually did windows reset , so preserved drivers , key , etc… but close to reinstall.

I guess so, bro - I haven’t OpenTrack, though I think the principle should be the same.
Your hint is subtle and sharp.
“Find an alternative way, if the main refuses to run.”, isn’t it?
Thanks for that!
The problem here is anyway that is the TIR USB peripheral (and its drivers as well, of course) are required to make the beam device at work, but this stuff is not unrecognized by the system, so it has been disabled and its drivers can’t be installed.
There must be something in my OS playing very dirty, you know? With best regards.

April 2022, have you said mate?
That is just the age I was speaking about… the blessed messing security update should have been released at that time.
It’s a guess of mine, agreeded, but I firmly don’t believe in coincidences, you nkow.We will see…
With best regards.

@Jackal
Ah, NO mate , in April '22 I’ve did upgrade to win10 21h2 .After that something broke beyond repair , system/os mostly worked , some problems with missing network devices also.
So no clear evidence what exactly happened. Maybe some security access problems… I don’t know.
But windows reinstall did the trick… LOL …
That you do as last resort, but, of course, after widows-reset (reinstall windows, NO computer reset) , all working again.
But of course, everything must re-install , all software , backup everything … etc.
Maybe your problem is not that big, but is really hard to say what it is… like this from “distance” .
I couldn’t solve my problem locally , on my own computer, and I know windows more then 20+ years… -
@Jackal I had a similar problem with Trackir. I did not do any upgrades to my system (I’m still on windows 10) but for some reason the Trackir software would crash as soon as it opened. I had to reinstall an older version of the Trackir software and then it finally worked. I never found out what the cause of the crash was.
-
@Carbide That sounds like user/config entries or some files, probably user configuration, or something else, even registry… got corrupted.
Need to uninstall, clean-up all leftovers then reinstall fresh.I’ve had similar “experience” with BMS 4.33/34? once , it crashed with blue screen, … after restart I couldn’t ever run BMS anymore… how strange.
Later I’ve found out that configuration files under /user/config was corrupted, was still there, but something was errorenously saved… and of course BMS refused to even run.,
Fix was simple , just delete previously saved user config files., not all of them , just recently saved - not logbook and keyfile.
So, for you would need to know where and what files and registry entries are in use with trackir software, configuration files, not application itself, as app gets re-installed .
After uninstall need to do a cleanup of leftovers manually. That can fix some issues when application can’t run.

Good morning, Gentlemen.
Here is the news: I managed to solve all my issues with TrackIR.
Thanks to the careful, patient assistance given by e-mail to a NaturalPoint technician in these last days, I had to wipe out literally any entries, one by one, of TIR in my PC/system, reinstall all the stuff from scratch, et voilà… the utility is back.
And it’s confirmed: the latest software/drivers released by NaturalPoint (5.4.2) is good in Windows 11 Pro too.Hope no one can make my experience, but in that unfortunate case I am giving below the procedure that helped me to get out from almost a nightmare:
"1. Unplug the TrackIR from your computer.
2. Remove TrackIR from add/remove programs.
3. Remove NaturalPoint Drivers from add/remove programs (this is the device driver).
4. Delete NaturalPoint folder from Program Files x86.
5. Delete NaturalPoint folder from %APPDATA% location (APPData is a hidden folder). If you have tracking profiles you wish to keep, please back up this folder instead.-C:\Users\[Your.Username]\AppData\Roaming\NaturalPoint.
- Open regedit.exe as an administrator. Please be careful not to change other items than the ones listed below.
- Search for and rename labeled as “NaturalPoint” to “NaturalPoint-00”. The default location for this is Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\NaturalPoint
IMPORTANT: I DELETED ALL OF THEM INSTEAD.
The choice is yours here. - (If there are any other old references to NaturalPoint or TrackIR from the older version of the TrackIR within the registry, you may want to rename those as well.)
- Reboot your PC/system.
- Download the latest installer from NaturalPoint website.
-The latest download will also have their latest USB Drivers. - Right-click and install as an administrator. At the beginning, you will be prompted to install the device driver. Make sure this gets installed. It is important that you get prompted for this.
- Locate the Track IR 5 Icon on your desktop, right-click on it and select ‘Run as Administrator’. (This only needs to be done the first time.)"
And that’s all. At last!
(@MaxWaldorf : thanks a lot for having located my topic correctly here. Would you kindly sign it as “Solved”, now?)Thank you all so much for your kind attention and hints, and with best regards.
-
@Jackal Thanks for the update. I have been postponing my latest windows update due to this thread and now I am a little less afraid.
-
So, dear mate, you can do that at will and without worries, most of all.
I just hope that my experience and hint above can help you and anyone else here in doubt or need.
Thanks for your attention and with best regards.
-
@Jackal Nice. Well done. … easy to say from hindsight … but I suspected that it is possible some ill/corrupted configuration files.
(Recently I was telling similar story with BMS 4.34 , because of corrupted config after blue screen, it wouldn’t start anymore - delete config, all fine)
Only problem are those “leftovers” after uninstall , you need to know what to search for , and where , so , to delete them.
Good work
Cheers -
@white_fang
Thanks, dear mate. And the point is just that one you remarked:
before attempting to do anything in the registry, you must know what is to be seeked for.
Absolutely and mandatory, this. With best regards.
