HP Leaving the VR market ?
-
Rumours abound that HP will stop development/production of VR sets.
I for one am saddened by this news, and was looking forward to maybe a G3 with pancake lens, at a reasonable price point. Alas its not to be.
Might be the time to catch one of these sets if the price drops.

@Fish44 yes, I’ve heard that too and have thought that was the reason why they were selling them a the discount they are now without doing any actual research. It’s too bad for flight sims for sure, but I also would say the G2 is not my favorite for any other VR title so I get why it hasn’t had that much of a impact on the VR market.

@Fish44 even with the rumors of them leaving the market its a killer hmd to pick up used. I find them to be alot less fiddly then the Quest2.

So a few days ago Microsoft announced that the WMR application and SteamVR WMR is going to be removed from a future Windows update. Any idea what it would do to Reverb users? Will we still be able to use the headsets or is it going to be a brick?

LONDON, Dec. 20, 2023 /PRNewswire/ – New research from Omdia signals a major downturn in the consumer VR market. Headset sales suffered a 24% decline in 2023, plummeting to 7.7 million units from 10.1 million in 2022.

@spotdott im not sure if they plan to remove it in windows 10 or 11. hopefully wmr sticks around in the current windows builds. chances are the g2 will probably die on you before this is a problem…mine sure did and my previous comment on this thread didnt age well lol

I will stockpile the cable…in case they no longer guarantee support…
-
I believe they officially announced to keep WMR until Jan 2026.

@Fish44 I believe HP stopped development in VR quite some time ago. My G2 is about 2-3 years old and I remember talk about HP stepping out of the VR market soon after my purchase of my G2. This just meant they won’t be making a G3 or any other headset.
As for WMR, I believe this is more to do with Win11 and that WMR won’t be available with Win11 or won’t be supported/developed after a certain date. I believe if you are in Win10, then there is no cause for concern.
As of November 1, 2026, for consumer editions of Windows and November 1, 2027 for commercial editions of Windows, Windows Mixed Reality will no longer be available for download via the Mixed Reality Portal app, Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR, and Steam VR beta, and we’ll discontinue support. At that time, Windows Mixed Reality will no longer receive security updates, nonsecurity updates, bug fixes, technical support, or online technical content updates. Existing Windows Mixed Reality devices will continue to work with Steam until users upgrade to a version of Windows that doesn’t include Windows Mixed Reality.
This gives WMR users just under 3 years to find a solution to replace WMR but even then, I suspect we will be able to install it separately. It just won’t be supported/patched/etc. after that point. I read that first sentence as WMR won’t be available from A, B, or C and we’ll discontinue support but they’re not specifically saying that WMR won’t be available as a separate download/install for those that want/need it.

Not a Windows user here, but maybe MonadoXR would be a solution, at least as a OpenXR runtime provider. I’m not sure if OpenHMD drivers would work under windows, but at least it supports Reverb G2.
BTW that’s why I stay away from closed ecosystem. Company may pull the plug on given tech and screw users just because thy (company) see no profits.
