Campaign and AI
-
The cockpit and other features in BMS have had a lot of attention but I think the campaign and AI deserve attention. I’ve noticed that attrition rates of aquadrons are absurdly high, even when the opposition has only older SAMS and fighters. Also the effectiveness of AI in 2D is very, very minimal. With some small changes the entire campaign experience could be improved a lot:
- Improve the 2D/outside of bubble AI behaviour:
e.g. DEAD flight against HAWK site with SDB’s: result in 3D -> entire site destroyed & entire flight OK; result in 2D -> entire site OK & entire flight destroyed!! - Also effectiveness of AI in strike missions is close to zero since 4.36 (2D/outside bubble only)
- Change the default flight attitudes of generated flights to prevent a lot of AI flights getting shot down by SHORAD (ingress at 15.000 -17.000 feet is unrealistic and way too low in general)
- Change the default loadouts (e.g. no GBU-31 for interdiction or Maverick for OCA strike, proper amounts of fuel tanks)
- Since the implementation of new AI attack profiles in 4.36 I have experienced a lot of weird suicidal behaviour of AI wingmen: Suddenly diving for the deck when given an attack command, simply ignoring a command and flying straight, even when very far from a target the AI needs to do a 360 degree turn before attacking, weird circling behavior during NOE attack, after a rejoin command not engaging ground targets anymore and claiming they are winchester while still having a full load of AG weapons. I’ve experienced all of these multiple times, but not found out how to reproduce. Under the same parameters in 4.35, none of these ever happened.
- Can we please have more realistic SAM behaviour with SAMS popping up going online and offline randomly etc and not the way it’s now in which every battalion gives away it’s position from very far out by its search radar.
Really hope this will be improved

i can reply only for the 3D ground attack issues:
-
if the AI dive to the deck after ordering an attack command, it just means they are doign a Pop up attack Profile. This is dependant on loadout , mission type, target type and weather.
i Might find the time to allow human player to instruct type of profile first -
if the AI does a U turn before engaging that just means the nominal IP is not between them and the target.
For information in NM:
mIPnominalrangeVec[AGM65] = 12.0f;
mIPnominalrangeVec[IAM] = 25.0f;
mIPnominalrangeVec[LGM] = 12.0f;
mIPnominalrangeVec[HARPOON] = 60.0f;
mIPnominalrangeVec[GBU15] = 20.0f;
mIPnominalrangeVec[ALL_OTHERS] = 10.0fif they are below minimal range, they will choose an IP at 90deg from their current trajectory and set it up @ nominal range
For information in NM:
mIPminimalrangeVec[AGM65] = 8.0f;
mIPminimalrangeVec[IAM] =10.0f;
mIPminimalrangeVec[LGM] = 8.0f;
mIPminimalrangeVec[HARPOON] = 10.0f;
mIPminimalrangeVec[GBU15] = 8.0f;
mIPminimalrangeVec[ALL_OTHERS] = 8.0f;For the AI doing sometimes a 360 turn and then flying in circle indefinitively, i might have found the bug
-
For the AI refusing to engage and saying Winchester, this is a bug
-
for other issues, it’s difficult to solve without a repro case
-

Good news i found out why in some cases AI were circling before attack
This happens when they start a popup attack from too high altitude anyway and can’t reach the ground 5NM before their target
In that case the fix is simple : if they are not at ground @5NM , just continue with a DIVE attack direct on target

Which aircraft? Wich theater?
For F-16, it should be about FL200 or above.
If lower, it is maybe because a/c is too heavy to climb properly regarding the distance to fly to the Push.

@Mav-jp The meny choice “Combat Management 4” looks great.
Would be a heavy improvement with this possibility to for example send in wingman low and perhaps pop up, and element in dive attack, and you as lead in high attack on a difficult target.
Is this something you hopefully are planning to integrate to BMS in 4.37. U2 ? -

In that case, it is rather two different flight.
A flight stay +/- together for mutual support and attack the same tgt (not the same DMPI). -
@Mav-jp
I want that “Combat Management 4” -
@patreus Actually, with satellite (and U2, etc.) imagery/intel around for decades now it could be argued that not knowing most any sams location at any time would be unrealistic.

Campaign date is not always 2023.

Understood, but as said, satellite recon has been around for decades. Let alone U2, etc.

The first real use of image sat was in 1991. To what extent and precision? I don’t know. But that’s one of the real questions.

@patreus - You can update the default flight plan altitudes and loadouts per mission type using Mission Commander. The section of this video which breaks down how to avoid constant fragging of suicide missions covers the MC functionality that can be used to make these edits to the campaign file…

Be careful, changing alt may lead into a/c not able to reach FL and will continously try to climb and will keep a low airspeed close ro stall, unable to maneuver until target … you can’t imagine how difficult to find an average correct setting to suits most cases.
You can try but keep that in mind. It can break IAs.
