New ECM model

I flew toward SA2 with only program 1 selected & XMIT 2 and Jamer enabled but SA-2 still shot me as I flew head on toward it (just for test). Was it my elevation? (20,000ft)
-
@Alfred for sure it was program 3. Or, to be more precise, its absence. Fan Song uses G band.

you mean program 3 should have selected?
-
@Alfred absolutely. You can see which programs are associated with specific bands in the threat guide.
-
@Foxtrot701
I thought I was reading this right ( I thought F stands for Fan Song)
I’ll try again tonight -
works better with program 3 but still SA-2 can shoot me down but at a closer range. First missile fired went flyby and I could see it very closely but second missile hit the jet. The jammer just delays Fan Song’s success.
-
Typically the jammer becomes less effective the closer you get with any radar threat. Too close and it wont help at all.
The BMS threat guide / Vault shows Burn Through ranges that give some idea.

But this is what ECM aims for, DELAY the “success” of the missile.
-
thank you for the useful replies, that means BMS modeled the jammer much more accurately than older versions.
-
I’ll have to read more about ECM in the manual. Thanks for this discussion.
-
what I am doing now is to put on XMIT 2 and press relevant program (3 for fan song) but do not give consent, so amber S on entering threat circle. That way I can use the HAD. Once SA2 appear on HTS page I shoot it and then give consent.
-
I am reading SA6 on programs 3, 4, and 5 which one to select? all simultaneously?

From reading in the manuals (hint, hint ) you need to jam bands g,h,i of the Straight Flush fire control radar, that would be 3 and 4.
BUT: If you look, the note “HOJ” should tell you, it may be not a good idea to use jamming when encountering an SA-6.
At least, the vulnerability to chaff is medium. -

Or leave ECM off as soon as you don’t have a launch/lock warning on the RWR anymore. In BMS it’s unlikely a launched missile will relock.
-
technically, the way I understand it, it doesn’t make sense for the ECM to be less effective as jet gets closer because that mean jamming signal is getting even stronger so why effectiveness is reduce? unless the HOJ becomes more effective at closer distances.
-
Regarding the absolute basics you need a higher Jamming to Signal ratio for the Jammer to work. As you get closer to the enemy Radar, the Radar signal the enemy radar gets back gains more and more power…until it becomes greater than the Jamming signal. (this is called Burnthrough Range )
The Burnthrough range will depend on the type of radar etc…however in BMS you need to look in the Threat Guide to get an idea than do your own testing in TEs to try it out.

now that makes sense, I guess a good boxer needs to remember that his opponent will throw punches as well.

Are you indicating here that what goes in game TE can be different from the information in the manual
