Falcon & the New Meta Quest 3

No, Quest uses inside out tracking with internal cameras…
-
@dolphin Thanks, good to know that base stations are not required for BMS with the Quest 3. A bit more space in the budget
-
@jayb
Yep and tracking works surprisingly good plus you don´t need a cable to connect it top the PC. Although on longer sessions you have to connect it to a charger. But that’s nothing compared to the clunky cables of a HP Reverb or other non wireless headset. -
I have the Quest 3 as well and I’m quite happy with it.
Even though I have a 3080, 32GB ram and a 5900x, I’m struggeling a little with performance. That is acceptable but i find it hard to find my buttons in my cockpit. I’ll probably get used to that but it’s a bit of a hassle. -
@b0bl00i Does the pass through not help with that? As far as I can tell the Quest3 can be double tapped to give a look at surroundings

In my experience, it’s far quicker and easier to just sneak-peek out the bottom .
-
@SoBad oh that’s disappointing. I was hoping for the pass through to be more functional
-
@jayb It does, in theory, but it’s just annoying having to tap out of 3d just to find a button and back in.
-
@b0bl00i
In general I am thinking on how to work my MFDs and ICP when I can’t see them. Sometimes you really need to punch some buttons in a hurry. Then again, if I look at my MFDs I would not expect to see outside, so maybe it can make sense with the pass through in some circumstances.Wasn’t something called PointCtrl in the works at some point? Perhaps that could help mitigate the VR headset restrictions. Although it would be slow I suppose, compared to a TrackIR setting with MFDs
-
My only real concern I have is the communications with ATC and AI flights. I use VoiceAttack which usually works great but sometimes it glitches out and I have to use the minikeyboard below my ICP
Finding the right button sometimes is not that easy
-
@b0bl00i That is a lot of buttons Cool setup
-
This post is deleted! -
@b0bl00i That’s where I use different shape cabinet cushions as tactile feedback on the buttons when I can’t see and hack the underside of my facial interfaces (like the Quest Pro comes stock) so I can see under the headset when using a second monitor to display MFDs and then can use close together, small buttons/switches more easily.

Aight. Negative Nancy chiming in again.
I’ve spent the last 3-4 weeks switching between a varjo aero and a pimax crystal in my cart, and couldn’t pull the trigger on either. Aeros limited vertical fov and binocular overlap rule it out for the current price imo and the crystal seems to have a schizophrenic design philosophy with various downsides from its status as a two in one device meaning it is sub optimal for both and combined with pimaxs spotty customer service record (according to the internet) I also couldn’t justify the price for that either.
And so on a whim I said **** it and got myself a 128gb quest 3 and daaaaaamn. I’m coming from a cosmos elite which I alternate between the stock lenses and the gear vr lens mod and the quest 3 absolutely destroys it in every single way.
I’m running a pretty average (although recent) processor and a 3070 and connect using a link cable.
Artifacting? It’s very rare, and you have to look for it. Comfort? I typically prefer halo straps but even with the standard strap the q3 is so light that I don’t think I’ll upgrade it at all. Performance? Absolute silk at 100% resolution and most general settings set for quality. Image quality? Stomps everything I’ve ever used. Battery life? Haven’t even come close to running out.
Probably my only complaint is that there seems to be a very narrow distance where aliasing is quite bad - specifically the cockpit text around the mfds and the mfd buttons (although the mfd screens themselves are very clear), with most of the rest of the cockpit fine.
TLDR: headset is an absolute beast for the money.

@MCDeedle I don’t have a link cable and people keep telling me that it’s way better than with airlink or virtual desktop. When you say the battery life is good, how long can it run with the link cable? I would like to know before purchasing one. I’ve heard a lot of complain about the battery life and we can play very long mission.
Thank you. -
Good purchase. I think it’s hard to beat it consider the performance, maturity and price.
Which specific VR settings did you end up with for BMS? Like shadows, drawdistance, pixel density etc.
Done any special settings in the oculus software to the render scale? I’m currently running 1.1
-
@Mikyjax at least with my Quest 2, I have an aftermarket cable that has an extra USB C port on it that allows the wall wort charger to be plugged in to the PC cable too so that there is that extra power. It practically makes it have indefinite battery life if you aren’t going to use Airlink/Virtual Desktop. Even though the Quest 3 has higher power consumption, I would still bet one of these cables would increase battery life longer than most BMS Viper missions, even in a 128 theater.

Thank you.I’ve not done a super long session yet, as I’m still dialling in optimal settings however I spent about an hour and a half tweaking settings yesterday and it got down to about 90%. I plan on doing a longer session this weekend and will let you know how long it lasts

I’m still fine tuning my settings. In general I don’t turn anything (shadows etc) off, have pd at or just above 1, have had good performance at all refresh rates at or just above 100% in the oculus software and between 100 and 140% in steam. NVidia control panel as well is mostly set on quality settings. If I manage to resolve my aliased text issue and get good air field performance I’ll post exact settings.
Haven’t played with draw distance too much. I didn’t know that was a thing.

@MCDeedle
Were you able to get your settings tweaked in and if so, would you mind sharing what you are using for settings in:
a) Oculus software (and any other settings in Oculus Debugger)
b) SteamVR
c) NVidia Settings
d) Other (Falcon BMS or Win 11)That would be greatly appreciated.
I am running my Quest 3 on a VRCover Premium link cable, and have had no issues with battery (it very slowly drains the headset battery but would last longer than any BMS mission I would fly).
Currently using just “standard” settings for all of the above and it is amazing, but looking to tweak it for even more amazing
System specs in my signature below. Thank you in advance.

Regards,I tried endless combinations of settings. It was fairly easy to get excellent resolution inside the pit with good frame rates, but the outside world was a little too out-of-focus compared to the clarity on a desktop monitor. By the time I could get it more in focus, my FPS dropped into the 20’s/30’s, which stuttered too much for me.
So I do 95% of my flying on my desktop monitor, and 5% on my Quest 3 for that VR rush.
My rig is in my sig.
