Coming from ‘that other sim’ to try out the vr and dear god - the frame rate and clarity makes so much difference. Watching my first fox 2 track and kill was a totally different experience. Still coming to grips with the F-16 (typically an F-18 and A-10 hack) but the a2a at least feels significantly more dynamic against the AI. I’m hooked.

@Seifer said in News from the frontline, 4.37.3 delayed (and explained):
Just a quick example, right now we have code ready to be tested that is being held for this version exactly because we are close to a release. Without this, new code is added forever, generating more bugs, more tests and more delays. Which also means more stress
I will pay you in money if you can please educate my f***ing leadership team on this one very simple concept…

RE: 4.37.3 VR performance improvements!?!
I did some unofficial beta testing and can confirm that my VR performance went from good to bloody brilliant.
I guess we enjoy it until NT hits…

RE: 4.38 Screenshots
Kind of a weird request if anyone’s listening - any chance of seeing what the “fog” looks like in the current 4.38 builds? Ie, the horizon from like 20k? I’m morbidly curious…

RE: Can't interact with AI Comms Menu in VR
In case anyone else ever has this problem, the issue was using “Full Screen” mode in the settings.
Changing this to either Window or Bordeless has resolved the issue.

RE: Should I go for VR??? Pico4 vs Quest 2/3
@cebraasesina my understanding is that most if not all of the headsets that you mentioned use a compression/decompression video transfer mode that eats into resources. Your pc looks like it would struggle with VR anyway and so I’d suggest a “native” pc headset that uses a direct display port connection. I’d recoomend something a bit older like a rift s which is a) display port driven and b) doesn’t have a super high resolution. Higher resolutions are going to tax your already underpowered system.
But yes, if you can I’d suggest trying VR. It’s all I use.

RE: Falcon & the New Meta Quest 3
Aight. Negative Nancy chiming in again.
I’ve spent the last 3-4 weeks switching between a varjo aero and a pimax crystal in my cart, and couldn’t pull the trigger on either. Aeros limited vertical fov and binocular overlap rule it out for the current price imo and the crystal seems to have a schizophrenic design philosophy with various downsides from its status as a two in one device meaning it is sub optimal for both and combined with pimaxs spotty customer service record (according to the internet) I also couldn’t justify the price for that either.
And so on a whim I said **** it and got myself a 128gb quest 3 and daaaaaamn. I’m coming from a cosmos elite which I alternate between the stock lenses and the gear vr lens mod and the quest 3 absolutely destroys it in every single way.
I’m running a pretty average (although recent) processor and a 3070 and connect using a link cable.
Artifacting? It’s very rare, and you have to look for it. Comfort? I typically prefer halo straps but even with the standard strap the q3 is so light that I don’t think I’ll upgrade it at all. Performance? Absolute silk at 100% resolution and most general settings set for quality. Image quality? Stomps everything I’ve ever used. Battery life? Haven’t even come close to running out.
Probably my only complaint is that there seems to be a very narrow distance where aliasing is quite bad - specifically the cockpit text around the mfds and the mfd buttons (although the mfd screens themselves are very clear), with most of the rest of the cockpit fine.
TLDR: headset is an absolute beast for the money.

RE: News from the frontline, 4.37.3 delayed (and explained)
Great update, and even if the timeline isn’t what the developers or the players wanted, having a rough idea is great IMO.
F-15C looks nice. Are there any planned TE’s or Documentation to support it?
Also $50 bucks for the developer that “accidentally” merges the NT into 4.37.3. Bugs be damned

RE: Questions for Quest 3 Owners?
@Raphael said in Questions for Quest 3 Owners?:
- Are you satisfied with the Quest 3, or would you now recommend a different headset?
Bang-for-buck nothing is even remotely close.
- What cable do you suggest? I would ideally want to get a cable that wouldn’t require charging the headset.
The best cable is one plugged into a charger while you use virtual desktop and a descent router. Link performance is massively below VD in my experience.
- What head strap would you suggest? I am thinking of the BOBVR M3 Mini.
I’ve been using mine for work and play and haven’t found the need to upgrade at all. Use it for a while first. You’d get a descent router for the cost of some of the head straps.
- I want the headset only for BMS usage. Will the 128GB be ok, or would I need the 512GB for some reason that isn’t apparent to me?
Yes to the first bit, no to the second bit.
- Can you please confirm thate the Quest 3 can operate without an internet connection? Since I was told that it can’t, but I cannot find any data to confirm that speculation.
Not sure, but knowing meta I doubt it.

RE: Falcon & the New Meta Quest 3
@Mikyjax With current settings about 28-30, but I wouldn’t tune to this as its a pretty frame-rate adverse scenario and not one I typically encounter during gameplay.
No ASW. ASW is trash

RE: Falcon & the New Meta Quest 3
@Tomcattwo
Hey, sorry I never got around to this. I’ve been helping with some other stuff and so haven’t much been playing with settings for 4.36.3. I’ve also upgraded to a 4070 because reasons.That being said.
Step one - Buy yourself a good router and Virtual Desktop and ditch anything related to linking in oculus. The performance is crap IMO. My current settings allow me to run VD in godlike mode and let me tell you, when it comes to pixel count, “quantity has a quality all its own”.
Nvidia settings are generally Max Quality with the changes of:
Ambient Occlusion -> Performance
Anisotropics -> Application Controlled (I think .3 runs this at like 16 anyway)
AA Mode - Application Controlled
Max Frame Rates - This one will depend on you. If you cant handle variable frame rates, set it according to the instructions below. Otherwise leave it off.
Negative LOD Bias ->Clamp
Texture Filtering Quality -> High QualityVD Settings
I think the important ones here are:
CODEC = AC1 (might depend on whether you have a 40xx or 30xx)
Streaming Quality -> Godlike
FrameRate -> See below
VRBitrate ->Max
Sharpening => 0
SSW -> Kill it with fire
Video Buffering on, Other advance option as desired.BMS Internal Settings
HDR stuff off, all other graphics settings on max, AA off.BMS config settings
set g_fVRResolution 1.0
set g_bVRParallelRenderThread 0
set g_bEnvironmentMapping 1
set g_bWaterEnvironmentMapping 1
set g_bShadowMapping 1On Setting Frame Rates
This one depends a bit on your personal preferences. Some people can handle variable frame rates, and how that is shown in the headset, others will get sick from that and need a constant FR that is a factor of the headset refresh rate. It can also depend on what missions you fly, as they can have different compute loads.Typically, to dial in the best FR settings I’d suggest that you set the VD Frame rate as high as possible (120) and leave locks off in Nvidia settings. Then load a standard mission type that will be indicative of what missions you tend to fly. Once you’ve loaded in, hit Alt C then F to bring up the frame rate counter.
Fly around and keep an eye on where your frame rate bottoms out, and what your average performance is like.
For me with the above settings I typically get about 60-ish FPS with dips to high 40’s. I could do better, but I’m hooked on resolution.
Now its the personal preference stuff. If you are mostly sitting just above any of the refresh rates (72, 80, 90, 120(what???)) then lock your FPS in NVIDIA to that setting and set it in VD. Otherwise pick the previous closest half refresh rate and set this as the FR lock on Nvidia. So for example if you are averaging 42 fps, lock the Nvidia setting to 40 (32 if you really cant handle jitters) and 80 in VD (or 72 if you cant handle jitters).
If variable frame rates dont bother you , just leave the nvidia locks off and set the VD setting to whatever. I believe higher FPS so factor that into your decision.
Disclaimer: Your results may vary. I’m also a hack and don’t really know much about stuff.

RE: Quest 2 runs off battery WHILE PLUGGED IN
Something that might help extend your play sessions is to reduce the screen brightness of the quest by a notch or two.
I did this by accident and prefer it for longer play sessions as my eyes don’t feel as knackered after a long session. Also reduces battery drain.

RE: Time for a new headset -- what to choose?
@Atlas said in Time for a new headset -- what to choose?:
Do you have any info that would indicate it won’t?
Just my experience with my 3070 with various headsets.
-
RE: Time for a new headset -- what to choose?
@Atlas is your 3080 going to actually push 35 ppd smoothly.
I ended up getting a Q3 because neither of the big two do what I want for the price. Big thing for me was stepping away from the fresnel lenses and improving clarity and the Q3 does this for a good chunk less than half the price of either of the other two while being lighter and more comfortable (from all reports) than the crystal and having a fov that is greater than double digits. It does have its faults (big one for me is that the canted panels seem to introduce aliasing of thin lines that at a specific width is terrible), but bang-for-buck it’s very good.

RE: for Quest 3 users : passthrough screen readability (helios compositing)
@Snake122 said in for Quest 3 users : passthrough screen readability (helios compositing):
@Virus that right now slated for 4.37.4 with its addition of OpenXR allowing AR. That is coming which is hoped to be Q1 of 2024.
You guys are legitimately smashing it out of the park.
